Matt Frewer : His Australian accent in Eureka
Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
Have they ever specified that his character is Australian? There are many similar accents from that area of the world.
I'm just playing Devil's Advocate though, I don't really have a problem with it, but it doesn't sound like real Australian.

Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
Just to clarify for you he's from New Zealand. You see a New Zealand flag in the background of his place in the episode "Alienated". And while it might be a horrible accent I'm still pleasantly entertained by the show.
Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
It is quite clearly an Australian flag.. just to clarify :|

What do you think, "My bad" should mean?
Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
The term "my bad" is synonymous with saying "my mistake", and the fact that you had the nerve to correct something that did not need correcting makes you a total dick.

That put me in my place, didn't it? No shades of grey in your world, eh?

Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
In one episode, I can't remember which one, he goes something along the lines of, their biggest mistake was going against an Australian when death is on the line (you know, the whole line from Princess Bride, but they changed it from Sicilian to Australian)

accent in Eureka
I've been watching the Season One DVD and listening to the commentaries; the producers said they brought in a dialect coach in case his accent wasn't working and the coach said his accent was perfect and that he didn't need any help. His accent isn't supposed to be spot on Australian. His character has been in America for quite a while and has lost a bit of his accent. Or at least that's what the producers said :)
Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
Yes. In more than a few episodes they refer to him as Australian or 'the Australian'. He also uses a bit of made up Aussie lingo, sounds like it could be Aussie slang - if you aren't an Aussie and know it's not.
It's a dreadful accent. Apart from making Australians look like a pack of idiots, he cannot do the accent.
Oh, and I'm an Aussie born and bred, so I do know what I'm talking about.

Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
His accent is the worst part of the show. I have liked him in other things, but Eureka would be better off without him and that really bad accent. Or maybe they could invent something that takes the accent away. Or he could just stop using it I think fans of the show would be grateful and forgive the show for ever having him use that accent. Unfortunately he is there with that accent in the second season.
Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
Watching the season 2 premier now, but I didn't notice his name in the credits. Has anyone heard whether he will be in season 2 or not. I really liked his interactions with Deputy Sheriff Jo.
Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
I've always been under the impression that he's a wannabe Aussie. I mean, he's a wannabe cryptozoologist and a general braggart, too. It falls into the realm of reason that he puts on the accent for show. I live in the states and even I know his accent is awful.
Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
OH ? That's supposed to be Australian ? LOL
I thought he was trying to be Scottish.

Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
I think she sounds pretty good! Then again I am Australian so I don't know how bad her American accent is. At least she doesn't sound TOO New Zealandish, unlike the extras on "Xena".. :P
Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
Yea his Aussie accent is pretty damn bad. At first I thought he was a Kiwi or a South African then they showed the Aus flag and some signs in his lab. Also, I remember him saying something about how he went tob68 Melb Uni in one of the episodes
Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
i actually like tagert (or however u spell it) and his accent.. i mean Eureka is a town of mismatched people.. i think it fits nicely.. id think something was wrong if tagert changed but hey thats just me. i like the show anyway.

Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
I was originally convinced it was a bad South African accent rather than a bad Aussie accent.

Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
Worst Australian accent ever. I had to come on here to see where he was originally from. Doesn't sound kiwi or south african, it's definitely supposed to be aussie, it's just VERY over the top.
Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
It's a really bad Aussie accent that's for sure. I thought he was supposed to be South African at first as well as some other people above me (and it's a bad SA accent too by the way - ha ha!) but then he said 'fair dinkum' and that's, as far as I know, an Australian expression, not NZ (haven't seen the flag yet, but if those who have think he's from Oz then I'm sure that's where he's supposed to be from).
Why do they even cast these actors in these roles which require accents they can't do - I'm sure the character would have worked fine with his normal accent.

Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
Yep - shocking accent. And he keeps slipping into a Sth African accent. If they wanted an Aussie character then employ a bloody Aussie actor. There has to be more than a few over there!!!! It also detracts from his acting as he is trying so hard to maintain the accent.
Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
I think it's supposed to be over the top - extreme - sort of Steve Irwin like - but, oh well, he's disappeared, so no worries.
Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
Ya tho over the topness is what makes it good kind of like good ol jack burtonME

Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
I love his charactor's accent and he is very entertaining. It's too bad he is no longer there.
Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
His OZ accent is spot on! That's how we all speak over here. Anyone who disagree ain't an oz mate!
Honestly, I see no problem with his 'faux' aussie accent. And I am an aussie! People remember this is A COMEDY - over the top (even though its really NOT that bad if you compare to Steve Irwin!) is for comedic effect!

Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
Yes, it's pretty bad. I wasn't sure if it was Irish/Scottish/South African or Australian at first. It was all over the place. The episode I just saw sounded a bit more like Steve Irwin & he offered someone a "tinny" & said "crikey!". That's when I knew it was meant to be Aussie (big clues!).
If it meant to be bad or not, it doesn't matter. It's Matt Frewer, love him, so he's forgiven! :)

Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
as an slp hoping to specialize in accent induction/deduction one day, I was hoping someone in this forum can point out specific errors he's made and how they should actually be pronounced in the Aussie accent. I lived there for 5 months a few years back and I guess my memory's a bit hazy because I thought he was doing a decent job (maybe laying it on a little thick, but I automatically knew it was a Aussie accent (or trying to be I guess).
also, I should clarify I've only seen season one as of this post, so if it gets worse (which I read in someone else's post) then maybe I'll soon understand. But some examples from season one would be especially terrific.

Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
My god its a totally terrible accent I am Ozzie (born in Bondi even) I love it, its soooo bad, it passes through it comes out the other side and is awesome. I kinda thought he might end up being found out as lying completely about his past, probably escapee from loony bin.
Some words make him sound Old Bore South Afrikaans. Jackman still speaks with an Oz accent last I heard him interviewed.

Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
Yeah I couldn't believe it when he said he was Australian (I'm a Queenslander) in that one episode. Now I'm partway through season 3 and was wondering where he was. Apparently is only in one episode of season 3 and recurring in the next. That's a 'meh' from me since I could have sworn it was a bad NZ accent/South African. He should have gone for the bogan sounding accent instead.
Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
Yes he would stand out like a sore thumb among other Australians but I love it. He's like a caricature of an Australian so the weird accent fits.
But yeah, it's like watching a tri-nations rugby tournament occurring inside one person.
But seriously no Americans do the Australian accent well. He's one of the better ones I've heard. Meryl Streep maybe, but she had a lot less lines than Matt Frewer has to deal with. He does a great job episode after episode.

Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
I'm weighing in almost a year late here - and I'm a Kiwi. Just wanted to say this was a decent crack at an Aussie accent (even if by no means perfect). I think the Aussie or Kiwi accent is particularly difficult for outsiders (and can often sound like a terrible South-African or English hybrid). Like the above poster says - I've yet to hear an American do a spot-on Aussie accent but Frewer obviously worked hard at it and it was a valiant attempt. I think most Aussies (and Kiwis) would respect the try.
Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
It would really depend on where in Australia and the fact that he travelled a lot. But it was very over the top, amixture of British, NZ, South Africaan and Aussie. Couldnt do it if i tried:)
Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
I've seen a lot of Aussie TV and imho his accent was spot on.

Re: His Australian accent in Eureka
Just found this as I am binge watching Eureka.
Frewer's accent actually isn't so terrible, I say this as an Aussie. Sure he slips on certain words between Brit, Kiwi, and South African. What makes it sound the worst is the American syntax! Going high or low when Aussies do the reverse… Also some of the vowels are spoken from the wrong place… Americans seem to speak from front to the mid mouth and use their lips more. Aussies, mid to back of the mouth with stiffer upper lip.
Definately not the worst I've ever heard!
