Thank you!

Re: IMDB 2

Where did it come from? Is it a safe site? Will it be able to call itself that for long since it probably has nothing to do with imdb?

Re: IMDB 2

Wow, it looks somewhat familiar. Colors, font. My security software doesn't think it's unsafe.

Re: IMDB 2

This person thinks it's unsafe: http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000051/thread/265818093?d=265855571#265855571

Others replied to say it seems safe to them. I wouldn't know.

Re: IMDB 2

I don't know if anyone knows who's running it, but to be safe you can just sign up with a throwaway email and don't give out any personal info.

Re: IMDB 2

How do you get a throwaway email?

Re: IMDB 2

Just sign up for a free email account anywhere and don't use that email address for anything else except registering for that website. The idea is that even if they were able to hack that email account (the one you signed up with), they wouldn't find any other personal info there.

Re: IMDB 2

I didn't know it was so easy to get free email. You always get an email account when you buy a device. If you pay for the device by cash, I don't see how they can't trace the email to a person. If you additionally never use the email account on your home system, but at a library or somewhere, ditto.

I don't have anything sinister in mind. I'd just like to have a truly hidden account then get on yelp and Angie's List write all the negative reviews I've been wanting to write without worry. Did you know people have been sued for writing negative reviews?

Freedom of speech is disappearing.

Re: IMDB 2

Yep, getting a free email account is easy. For throwaway accounts I use mail.com because they're the easiest to register for, and they don't even ask for a phone number (most email services do these days). The way people get personal info via email is by hacking into your account so they can read your emails, where a lot of people keep info about their name, address, social security number, credit cards, etc.

People could only be successfully sued if the companies were able to prove the reviews were lying, which would constitute libel. The truth is always a defense against accusations of defamation.

Yeah, but the truth can be hard to prove even if the burden is on the suing company to prove lies. Big companies can afford better lawyers. It's just a scary situation to be sued by a corporation - they can often afford the suit better than you can and can afford better lawyers. Who wants a lawsuit hanging over them?

I think I narrowly escaped being sued for a negative review years ago. Other reviewers backed me up, and their reviews disappeared from the site. I was then asked by the hosting site to confirm that I had written that review. I had a bad feeing about this because the owner of the business had reacted viciously toward all negative reviews. I ignored the email, then my review, too, disappeared. I think the hosting site was going to throw me to the sharks if I had answered yes.

Re: IMDB 2

You're probably save on Yelp, given that the numerous negative (and often hilarious) reviews there is one thing that's made that site so popular. The vast majority of companies would rather risk the (typically minimal) damage done by a bad review than the time/expenses/risks of such a lawsuit, especially one that would be nearly impossible for them to win.

Re: IMDB 2

Companies shouldn't be allowed to censor reviews. They should take the bad with the good or if they don't want to be reviewed at all, a site like yelp should be allowed to say "This business declines to be reviewed".

It wasn't yelp I had the problem with.

Re: IMDB 2

Yeah, that's critical.
