The Soapbox : Pros & Cons of Living in This Group Home in Ohio

Re: Pros & Cons of Living in This Group Home in Ohio

Yikes, I’m sorry. That sounds disgusting af! Maybe since your first month is covered, you can use your leftover money to go grocery shopping? See if it helps?

Re: Pros & Cons of Living in This Group Home in Ohio

No leftover money/yet.

Re: Pros & Cons of Living in This Group Home in Ohio

• old frozen fried pork that tasted way spoiled I threw away
• fries and ketchup
• very annoyingly spicy mixed cabbage..

Are the people who run the home eating the same foods as you or are they giving you those foods while they eat something else?

The other poster had a good question. Do you know if the people who run the home eat what you eat or do they give you cabbage while they eat 'better' meals?

Re: Pros & Cons of Living in This Group Home in Ohio

Nice name
🙄

Re: Pros & Cons of Living in This Group Home in Ohio

You too 👍

Re: Pros & Cons of Living in This Group Home in Ohio

I dunno, I imagine people here drink, though. They were talking about crab legs today in the car.

I am not bragging "I told you so" but I did.

And then you proceed to go over WHY you are so right!

I'm sick of your bull shit! Leave her alone, you freak! You are reported!

You asked a pretty question; I've given you the ugly answer.
Fasten Your Seatbelts….
It's Going To Be A Bumpy Night!

Re: Pros & Cons of Living in This Group Home in Ohio

Yes, why I am right is the solution to her living situation.

What is YOUR solution?

She's eating frozen fish sticks, has no money, can't do anything she wants, and now what?

Re: Pros & Cons of Living in This Group Home in Ohio

Do you think her life is in danger?

Re: Pros & Cons of Living in This Group Home in Ohio

Not immediately.

However, her mental health is in danger.

She is in jail, but doesn't know it.

All of us enjoy having the food we generally want, having some money to spend as we like, having snacks to eat when we like, etc. She is an adult and has no freedom, although she is free.

What will happen is that she will slowly get angry about it. She will clash with staff, get in trouble, they will say she's crazy, people will talk to her like she's a retard with fake complaints, then more meds, hospital, etc.

She walked into a situation that will beat her down and make like worse.

That will send you to the hospital, jail, the street, or to death.

Re: Pros & Cons of Living in This Group Home in Ohio

2. Get a MENTAL HEALTH CASE MANAGER. They do all the work for you regarding housing, healthcare, clothes, etc. They are an advocate for you.

A case manager may be able to find you an apartment. I was on a Fenesic ACT Team and we had criminally insane super crazy people in their own apartments.

3. Apply for section 8 housing. Going back to 2, a case manager can help with that.

I actually suggested this a while back, as the group home situation seemed seedy at best. I knew a guy back when I used to go to church, that was in this situation. Merlin had some issues that made it difficult to hold down any job, but he also had Muscular dystrophy.

One day I went to his apartment, and was surprised at how nice it was, and it didn’t appear to me to be in a government housing sector. It was very tidy inside, but he had paintings, sculptures, and various artwork based on Merlin the magician, scattered about all over the place. Apparently, he identified heavily with his namesake. But I digress…

Re: Pros & Cons of Living in This Group Home in Ohio

The Merlin part is awesome!

Anyway, I used to work on a Forensic ACT Team (Assertive Community Treatment) and that was composed of a housing specialist, employment specialist, nurse, doctor, drug specialist, and I was the therapist.

The goal was to help mental patients, who were criminals in my case, get everything they need to live independently. That was VERY tough given the kind of patients we had but there's ACT teams for patients who aren't criminals.

Another goal is to make it so that the person ISN'T living in a group home/institution.

There's no need for it.

A case manager will even help you shop for food.

IT IS MUCH BETTER!!

If I lived by Cleveland I'd help this woman for free.

Re: Pros & Cons of Living in This Group Home in Ohio

Yeah. Alderian knows what he is talking about. My ma was a case manager and they do tons and have connections.

But, moving to a state that has services is a super good idea too. And Minnesota with lower housing costs really is smartest. Cheaper parts of Colorado, Oregon, Washington too. No idea about East coast stuff. Fuck group home like that one. Dickensonian is the word. Orphanage for adults. (Shared apartment managed by a case worker might not be a bad idea though. Depends on objectives)

Re: Pros & Cons of Living in This Group Home in Ohio

We have TONS of services in Philly.

We have crime and whatnot but a HUGE mental health system.

We also have all four seasons with a fairly short winter.

Minnesota, I used to know someone from there and it get so cold it sounds like people are on another planet. They have to walk through TUBES in cities to avoid being outside in the winter.

It sounds heinous.

My friend used to say things like "It's -40 so it's finally okay to go skying" and I was like WHAT!?

I would be skeptical of moving there. However, a lot of nordic people live there and they are big on social services.

Re: Pros & Cons of Living in This Group Home in Ohio

Cold for sure. And some serious culture shock. Might be Florida and Minnesota don’t get along well.

Re: Pros & Cons of Living in This Group Home in Ohio

I cannot imagine living in Minnesota.

What kind of clothes do you wear in -40 degrees?

There must be people there burning tires at night to increase global warming just out of hope.

Re: Pros & Cons of Living in This Group Home in Ohio

Yes, I think that he offered up some good advice, and it’s worth looking into. Hopefully Christina sees it, but I’ll probably add a tag so that she does.

Though there might be exceptions out there, I also get the impression that most of these group homes are not in the best of neighborhoods.

Re: Pros & Cons of Living in This Group Home in Ohio

I keep saying it but group homes are the same as Charles Dickens and Victor Hugo depicted "orphans homes" and so on. Some scumbag pretending to be a humanitarian owns the place and does everything they can to make the most money while providing the least.

The brief plan I laid out will help her tremendously if she follows it.

I wish I could help because I am relentless at this kind of stuff. I hate seeing sick and disadvantaged people being mistreated.

Re: Pros & Cons of Living in This Group Home in Ohio

It looks like your original post disappeared. But I tagged her in my post quoting you, so hopefully she looks into it.

1TV is working in the place? Does this place look clean and well maintained? How is the quality of the food your getting?

Re: Pros & Cons of Living in This Group Home in Ohio

Maybe the other housemate, too.

The place does look clean but old.

The food is good quality but not my preference.

It's pretty nice. I just wish I had more money and furniture.

Then maybe it isn’t so bad after all, Christina? Are they nice to you? Do you feel safe? I think the food choices might be based on your health issues. At least that’s how I think that it would work? I would think that having your own place would probably be better, yet the structure is also important. Diet is actually a very critical issue for you. It’s the difference between living decades longer than you might otherwise.

I don't have money to eat out, at nice restaurants, at all.

The State Of You Mate!!

Re: Pros & Cons of Living in This Group Home in Ohio

I guess not. I think he said they had nothing if that's possible. They even took $300/month from my SSI for rent after they had already been paying rent. So, instead of ever living on $794/month, I gave a big chunk.

I think right now having a bed ,a safe place to stay and 3 meals a day is the best thing Christina to build up a stable life style and is more then a lot of people ever get. With this stability, you can go out and job hunt for a part time job, you've done it before. Its still early, give things time.👍

I don’t know your situation, or much about this topic, but I think that some restaurants accept EBT or SNAP. I did a quick search.

Good deal Christina Hopefully there are some restaurants close by that will accommodate such payments.

If your neighborhood is somewhat sketchy, you should probably go out in groups with the other girls. It probably wouldn’t be a terrible idea to carry some pepper spray, either.
