Sam Neill did a Screen Test for the role of 'James Bond' (after Roger Moore had moved on from playing 'Bond').
In the end, it actually did come down to just Sam Neill and Timothy Dalton (when it came to who was going to play 'Bond') and it ended up going to Dalton.

Robert De Niro tried out for the role of Sonny in "The Godfather". I'm glad James Caan was selected. Good for De Niro, too, who got to play Vito Corleone in the flashback scenes in The Godfather: Part II
