Classic Film : Film of George Raft Dancing

Film of George Raft Dancing

Classic film fans know tough guy George Raft was once a dancer, but I didn't know there was film of him in action.

Here's a clip from Side Street (1929) and the number Take A Look At Her Now.

I don't know how he felt about Cagney, but it a shame they didn't get together at some point and just let loose.

Someone combined it with Little Richard singing Tutti Frutti.

Re: Film of George Raft Dancing

Cagney & Raft did dance competitively against each other in "Taxi!". Raft and his partner beat Cagney, who was dancing with Loretta Young. Raft made a wisecrack and Cagney knocked him down.

Their styles were different. Raft was more elegant ballroom, Cagney was more of a hoofer. I bet Cagney was a much better tap dancer than Raft.

Cagney should have made a musical with Dan Dailey, Fred Astaire or even Mickey Rooney.

Check out George Raft dancing in "Bolero".

Re: Film of George Raft Dancing

He was a better dancer than actor.

Re: Film of George Raft Dancing

He also dances in Dancers in the Dark (1932) and Rumba (1935).

Re: Film of George Raft Dancing

Good topic.
Raft was a very good dancer, a fact that is often lost in his later movies.
He was his own worst enemy in terms of his career after he became a "star".
I have always liked him.
