Extrapolated to a full year, it would come out to about 400,000 deaths. We don't know what that number will actually be, probably much higher, but this is the best estimate we can make currently. 400,000 is 10 times as large as the average annual flu death rate of 40,000, or 1000% higher. If it was 1% more deadly than the flu, which you claim, the annual deaths would be 40,400. We have already far surpassed that, so you are just dead wrong.

America has a higher rate for several reasons. Some are cultural, some are political, part of it is because we have a high percentage of people over 55. Part of it is how we handled it. Now it is easy to Monday morning quarterback so I will acknowledge that government did as best it knew how at the time. We also need to face the face that both sides played politics with the situation and it cost lives. I think the democrats are more responsible in that regard but I may be biased. I think that what Britain is doing right now as far as being stricter on lockdown in high population areas is the approach we should have used rather than shutting down the whole country. That was counterproductive. We cant save people. Some people are going to die. We need to accept that as inevitable. What we can do is slow the virus and keep infection at a rate that doesnt overwhelm the healthcare system. Older people and people with health issues should exercise more caution while younger healthier people should persue herd immunity.
