Bette Midler : Back to Broadway in 2017

Back to Broadway in 2017

She will return to Broadway early in 2017 in a new production of HELLO, DOLLY! Composer-lyricist Jerry Herman is very pleased.

I think at one time she expressed interest in playing MAME, which also has a Jerry Herman score, but I think Dolly Levi is a better fit for Midler.

Re: Back to Broadway in 2017

She's more the right age than Streisand was when she played it on film in 1969. I just wish I lived in America so I could see this production - Bette's fanbase will ensure a sell-out, of this I've no doubt.

Re: Back to Broadway in 2017

Hello Dolly with Bette Midler needs to be filmed!!! There are no complete professional filmed recordings of Hello Dolly in existence. It's a shame the revival with Carol Channing in the 1990s wasn't professionally recorded. That was the last chance to capture Channing in the role for all history. This new production sounds like it is going to be huge and a once in a lifetime performance. Someone needs to get this on film and capture it and put it on DVD. It will make a fortune!

Re: Back to Broadway in 2017

Actually most Broadway shows from 1965 on have been professionally filmed and are at the Lincoln Center Archive. Its just very difficult to view them.

Re: Back to Broadway in 2017

Good grief, wasn't her excruciating mugging bad enough in that TV production of "Gypsy?" I can't see how this will fail financially--in fact, I'm sure it will be a smash-- but rest assured, she'll be a horrific Dolly.

Re: Back to Broadway in 2017

Actually she is better suited to Dolly as she's a broader more comedic character than the strident mama Rose.
I think she'll be great.

Re: Back to Broadway in 2017

More people I know are interested in Bette as Dolly than the big blockbuster smash "Hamilton". In fact, they also thought she was a perfect Mama Rose. I'm hoping that she is energized by it and decides to do "Mame" afterwards.

Updated, 9-20: With tickets going fast, I'm going to start a "Dolly" fund. That means several months of sobriety i 2000 n order to catch up from buying a ticket.
