I just popped in to say how delighted I am that Erica is kicking ass magnificently in her thread!

The fact that Congress has been trying to pass this legislation and failed 200 times makes it clear that in the past there has been considerable resistance to this move (so much for morons like Anna arguing that everyone already knows it is a hate crime and a federal offence). The reason why it should be a federal offence is (duh) that states in the South, especially, have a long and respectable history of both lynching and letting off the perpetrators without penalty. So yes, making it a federal offence is necessary (and 410 members thought so).
