Gene Hackman : Was he ever a list?

Was he ever a list?

In his prime was his box office status high like his buddy dusitn hoffman.

Re: Was he ever a list?

I think after French Connection surely

Re: Was he ever a list?

what are his box office status i feel he gets less credit then hoffman and michael caine. HE is one of mfavorutie huge fan

Re: Was he ever a list?

He was bankable box office for two years, French Connection/Poseidon Adventure; 1971/72. No one went to see Scarecrow in 1973 nor The Conversation 1974. Two of his great films. He became disillusioned and took the money and ran for Lucky Lady 1975.

Re: Was he ever a list?

conversation did get best picture nom so it was not a totally flop. Hackman name was credited above reeve in first 2 superman films so he must have had some clout. plus hoosiers was a box office hit(at least sleeper hit) so was missipi burning. Crimson tide he was advertise as much as denzel he was given credit for success too. I could be wrong i heard from some people michale caine was also a list but other people told me he was a list in Britain not much usa.

Re: Was he ever a list?

Those films did well yes, but for Crimson Tide the producers weren't going to use him because he wasn't "bankable". They wanted Pacino or Beatty. Hackman had a deal that his name would appear on all posters even if he was second lead. With The Firm, Tom Cruise had to have sole credit on the poster so Hackman took his name off the poster altogether. Hackman was one of the greatest actors America ever produced, everyone in the business knows and respects him, but he was never a big star.

Re: Was he ever a list?

Big star in terms of box office who cares he is one my favoruite actors of all time. Maybe he never had harrison ford ,brad pit or even bruce willis box office clout but he is much better actor then them . He has 2 oscars iconic films. he is more well known then ebatty. Iam surprise they wanted beatty i know betty was bankable in his time but the 90s he was cosndierd bo office poison. I know hoffman was big star but was michael ciane ever

Re: Was he ever a list?

You say who cares about box office, even though that was your original question, I merely answered it for you. I know more about Hackman than you know about the back of your hand. Either one.

Re: Was he ever a list?

I thought i was the biggest hackman fan lol/. I asked because my freind and i had debate i thought caine was a list too maybe wrong. i could sworn he was up there wiht dustin hoffman burt reyondls and eastwood in big stars of 70s

Re: Was he ever a list?

Michael Caine and Gene Hackman were both A listers. Neither of them were absolute top tier box office performers (very few actors are as reliable as the Clint Eastwoods, Harrison Fords or Tom Cruises were at their peaks) but definitely what you would consider A listers. Now of course Gene has retired and Caine mostly takes supporting turns in blockbusters, enough to keep him a big name, but not really an A lister, but as he's into his 80's now I think it's just great that he's still acting.

Either way, they're both truly iconic.

Everything was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt!

Re: Was he ever a list?

Gene hackman was billed over reeve in 2 superman films i would say he has more range more talent clint and ford He did have films would not be hits without him. I know michael caine was huge in 60-80s i always thought he was the nic cage of his day he won oscar made some critically acclaimed films but always made alot of off beat sitnkers for money. i know most of 80s and 90s caine career was in trouble then cider house was his comeback after his 2nd oscar won it lead to a revive successful career il supporting roles in hits. I would sya they where a listers i know gene buddy dustin was

Re: Was he ever a list?

Re: Was he ever a list?
