Pam Grier : should of been oscar nominated for jackie brown

Re: should of been oscar nominated for jackie brown

Yea Pam Grier totally should have been nominated for Jackie Brown.

Re: should of been oscar nominated for jackie brown

The fact that she wasn't considered is more proof of the blatant political crap involved with the Oscars. I haven't watched the Oscars in many years, because I don't believe in making it a contest. This is peoples' hard work, sometimes LIFETIME achievements - but be quick so we can get our advertising dollars.

Pam Grier gave an exceptional performance in Jackie Brown. And I think one of the major reasons that it was overlooked was the fact that it wasn't 'Pulp Fiction 2'. People were expecting that, and that's not what the movie was. Add in the fact that QT had risen to an egomaniacal level that made Hollywood people cringe, and any chance for anyone went out the window.

I know Robert Forester was nominated, and I think that's valid, but he wasn't anywhere in the league of ALL the other actors in this movie. That's how good they all were.

Pam, you are a true bada$$, and I watch Jackie Brown often. Whenever I want to feel empowered I watch the scene with 'Shut your raggedy a$$ up...' It is utterly brilliant.

Re: should of been oscar nominated for jackie brown

She was very deserving, but I'm not surprised she was passed over. It's a very quiet, understated performance and they might also have looked down on her blaxploitation past. It's hard to understand why they nominated Robert Forster but not her. The two were a team and one performance doesn't work without the other to play off of.

Can't agree more.

So true.

As I wrote in the thread about how young she looks, and I agree she does look quite younger, I'm much more struck by the beauty in the maturity you can see.

Jackie Brown was a mature character and aside from being extremely desirable, Pam brought depth and beauty in who she showed Jackie Brown to be.

In an industry where youth is worshipped, she keeps getting more beautiful as she matures.

Unless surgery gets in the way, I have no doubt she's just going to keep getting better looking but more to the point, hoping she gets more roles like that, she's just going to keep getting more beautiful.

It's unfortunate that Jackie Brown maybe wasn't the sort of movie that some people immediately think of as Oscar material and it was a little overshadowed by Pulp Fiction, but I enjoy Jackie Brown far more. Lots of excellent acting in it but Pam really stands out and makes it a movie that's always good to watch again and again.

It's a shame that sometimes that experience of how fresh the movie continues to be over time doesn't weigh enough in award consideration. How can it when the awards are for new movies? ..but even the first time you see the movie, it's so easy to realise that Pam deserves an Oscar for it.

*should HAVE been*

"of" is not a verb.

The two biggest rip offs in Oscar history:
1--Eli Wallach as Tuco in the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
2--Pam Grier as Jackie Brown in Jackie Brown

Re: should've been Oscar nominated for Jackie Brown

Director Quentin Tarantino wanted Pam Grier to play the title character. She previously read for the "Pulp Fiction" character Jody, but Tarantino did not believe audiences would find it plausible for Eric Stoltz to yell at her. Grier did not expect Tarantino to contact her after the success of "Pulp Fiction". When she showed up to read for Jackie Brown, Tarantino had posters of her films in his office. She asked if he had put them up because she was coming to read for his film, and he responded that he was actually planning to take them down before her audition to avoid making it look like he wanted to impress her.

Re: should of been oscar nominated for jackie brown

Goddammit! Should HAVE. NOT should "of". Stop being a stupid illiterate American.

Re: should of been oscar nominated for jackie brown

She was breathtakingly beautiful, captivating and so natural in that role.

Re: should of been oscar nominated for jackie brown

So sad the Academy overlooked her that year. She was perfection in that role. Not only nomination worthy, but the kind of performance that deserved a win. I think she has never gotten the credit for being as good an actress as she really is....largely due to the fact that she started her career in B-movie....fun B-movies....but B-movies nonetheless, and the Hollywood establishment has never changed that view of her.

I had hoped that this film would lead to her getting meatier roles in A-grade projects, but it just never materialized. That's too bad....she could hold her own amongst the best.
