Reported for virulent racism
Re: So … am I racist because I think this aunt Jemima business
Hey Ethel!!! Long time no see.
I strongly support BLM. It's the most exciting social movement I've seen in America in a long time. They are effecting real change. They did what the ACLU and no one else could do, put self-entitled self-righteous police departments on the hot seat and under review.
However, I strongly oppose the tearing down of statues and removal of icons. We have to accept the reality of history, the bad and the good. We can't destroy everything from the past which doesn't meet today's moral standards.
There were women like Aunt Jemima. Are their lives worthless now because they were oppressed? I love Aunt Jemima. Remember Groucho de Sade from IMDb? Aunt Jemima was one of his icons. Lol.

You know the Aunt Jemima character was created by a white woman who was trying to peddle her pancake mix at the local state fair, right? She hired a black actress by the name of Anna Harrington to play her.
Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben, the Cream of Wheat guy, etc, are all degrading stereotypical images that were created by whites to sale their products. Black people never had a say in that. Back then blacks were often in a position of servitude, and these icons/caricatures were meant to convey a sense of home, nurturing comfort, and down home southern hospitality.
No one would buy Uncle Watanabe's Internment Camp Rice or Uncle Geronimo's Trail of Tears Maize. But when it comes to blacks and how we are depicted, cultural sensitivity just goes right out of the window. Such images are damaging to us as a people and only serve to reinforce the negative stereotypes that already plague our community.
However, I strongly oppose the tearing down of statues and removal of icons. We have to accept the reality of history, the bad and the good. We can't destroy everything from the past which doesn't meet today's moral standards.
Most of those confederate statues are just relics from the old antebellum South. They were erected during and after the reconstruction phase to remind us blacks of our place, and to celebrate white supremacy. Most were funded by racist organizations such as the KKK.

Chicka, I definitely understand what you are saying. I just think AJ is an American icon. I don't know. I'm not racist and I think it's sad.
But then, there is at least one member of my Barbara Stanwyck group on FB that is very vocal about refusing to watch one of her best Christmas films (Remember the Night), because of the way the African American butler is portrayed and treated by Fred MacMurray's character (I'm sure Freddie Mac wasn't racist).
As for Barbara, her best friend/maid/personal assistant (basically her everything) was an African American woman named Harriet Cordray. She went everywhere with her and had she out lived Missy (Barbara), she would have been very well taken care of in the will.
She even gave Barbara the nickname Missy and everyone in Hollywood called her that.

You don't come across as hateful or bigoted to me, Ethel, and I can understand the sentimental attachment that you have to this very American icon.
But the truth is, most black Americans don't share in that sentiment because of the historical racist connotations associated with Aunt Jemima and other stereotypically black caricatures. We mainly view them as old antiquated symbols of oppression from a bygone era.

Re: So … am I racist because I think this aunt Jemima business
I agree wholeheartedly. Aunt Jemima, to me, is extremely special. I don't want to compare her to the statue of liberty, but she is special and stands for much … good and bad. If I were African American (I can only think, since I'm not), I think I would be pissed. I think it's wrong.
I didn't remember that Groucho was so fond of Aunt Jemima, but I am. LOL. I think it's a damn shame!! It's not racist!
I want one of the bottles, but they've probably been pulled from the stores already.

No, I don't believe it's racist. I want to read over Chickaboom's position again. Apparently they're planning on retiring her. And I think it's a shame.

Maybe the old Aunt Jemima who looked like Mammy was racist, but the new one?
