Shia LaBeouf calling out Spielberg in new interview

He thought it would be a dream come true, but he had a hard time. “I grew up with this idea, if you got to Spielberg, that’s where it is,” says LaBeouf, who originally wanted roles like Macaulay Culkin’s in the “Home Alone” movies. “I’m not talking about fame, and I’m not talking about money.”

He thought Spielberg would be his ticket to a big-screen legacy. “You get there, and you realize you’re not meeting the Spielberg you dream of,” LaBeouf says. “You’re meeting a different Spielberg, who is in a different stage in his career. He’s less a director than he is a f–king company.” (Spielberg declined to comment.)

LaBeouf felt like there was no room to grow as an actor, and that he was stuck. “Spielberg’s sets are very different,” he says. “Everything has been so meticulously planned. You got to get this line out in 37 seconds. You do that for five years, you start to feel like not knowing what you’re doing for a living.”

When LaBeouf completed the recent art project of re-watching his old films, he purposefully got up and left during the second “Transformers,” which was executive produced by Spielberg. “I don’t like the movies that I made with Spielberg,” he says. “The only movie that I liked that we made together was ‘Transformers’ one.”

Well, it's not exactly Spielberg's fault that he worked with LaBeouf on Transformers and Indy 4 rather than Lincoln and Bridge of Spies.

Re: Shia LaBeouf calling out Spielberg in new interview

Lincoln and Bridge of Spies also suck. Lost his edge.

Re: Shia LaBeouf calling out Spielberg in new interview

That is both wrong and *beep* stupid. Those movies (along with "Munich", but you'd probably consider that one too old to matter) are two of the smartest and savviest political dramas released by Hollywood in years.

Also, what is "edge"? How to you quantify it? When, specifically, did Spielberg lose it?

Re: Shia LaBeouf calling out Spielberg in new interview

I faintly remember that you've been on the Spielberg boards since forever, and you might be his biggest living fan. No point or patience in arguing with you.

I actually own Munich on dvd and I do think that, along with War of the Worlds, it's his final worthwhile film.
You don't quantify edge, you just feel it.
Read Pauline Kael's final assessment of Spielberg: the most celebrated film critic of her time argued as early as the 90's that Spielberg had lost his edge.

I personally think that he began to be slipping seriously with Always (1989) and Hook (1991). But he didn't lose his edge completely until much later, by the time of Indiana Jones 4.

Re: Shia LaBeouf calling out Spielberg in new interview

Saying "You don't quantify edge" nullifies the argument. You're essentially admitting you're arguing a fault that can't be described or calculated. It's empty posturing.

Who's Pauline Kael?

Shia Labeouf for all his usual general idiocy said something really intelligent about Spielberg recently: that he's not so much a director now as he is a corporation. I think he was a very talented director once who sold out too much.

Spielberg has made excellent films throughout his career and to say otherwise is disingenuous to me. He's undoubtedly lost his edge overtime and b68 I do agree with Shia's assessment about his corporate essence, but the man's an important filmmaker.

Re: Shia LaBeouf calling out Spielberg in new interview

Certainly, Spielberg isn't at the top of his game right now, but he still puts out very decent movies. Bridge of Spies was good and Lincoln was great.

Re: Shia LaBeouf calling out Spielberg in new interview

Michael Jordan has already won the six champion ships, why another for one riding his sack. Shia has no class. You disrespect Spielberg, therefore you have sinned.

Re: Shia LaBeouf calling out Spielberg in new interview

Shia is a crappy actor who played a part in ruining Indy 4. I wouldn't listen to him.

KISS, Alice Cooper, Rob Zombie, Ozzy Osbourne and My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic fan

Re: Shia LaBeouf calling out Spielberg in new interview

A film isn't about any one actor or his vanity. Even as someone who doesn't like most of Spielberg's films, this feels like the type of grandstanding a self-serving actor would take up only after being in an acclaimed indie. SS didn't direct those Transformers movies, Bay did...unless he's suggesting the former has more authorship on the actors' performances tha 111c n the actual director. I get that SL wants to be taken seriously as an Artist and stirring up anti-corporatist sentiments is a good way to earn brownie points with the pretentious cine-hipsters, but maybe people should look within themselves for faults before trashing others.

Spot on, Shia.

Sounds like a naive child who is in denial that men and women, no matter who they are, can't live up to the idealized versions you create for them. He needs to grow up and stop being a bitxh.

Re: Shia LaBeouf calling out Spielberg in new interview

Apparently, Shia Labouf and Megan Fox both fell out with Spielberg which honestly doesn't faze me. They are both talentless hacks.

Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend watch My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

Re: Shia LaBeouf calling out Spielberg in new interview

Shia is a nutjob but I can't fault anyone for speaking honestly. This Speilberg is not in the same universe of director he once was. I can't remember the last time he did anything exciting or great. Sad but true.
