Nicole Kidman : Genius thread

Genius thread

Thought about starting a new thread for "Genius" to keep up with the latest developments.

Jude Law was recently spotted in Asheville, NC doing research on Thomas Wolfe.

Here is also the latest production info available.

Filming is now due to start in mid-October on Genius, the forthcoming feature starring Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman and Jude Law.

The drama, which will shoot in the UK and the US, explores the relationship between author Thomas Wolfe (Law) and renowned literary editor Max Perkins.

Acclaimed theatre director Michael Grandage is coming out from behind the proscenium to take the helm, calling the shots from a screenplay by Bond supremo and Penny Dreadful writer John Logan, who has adapted it from A Scott Bergs biography Max Perkins: Editor of Genius.

Logan also produces along with Grandage and James Bierman; the latter two founded The Michael Grandage Company in 2011.

"You were supposed to love me, werent you?", Nicole Kidman-Stoker 2013

Re: Genius thread

Sounds like an interesting story , I don`t care anymore if Nicole`s are flops or she doesn`t get nominated for Oscars , as long she does a good perfo1908rmance and the film itself is enjoyable as well that`s all that matters

Re: Genius thread

Me too, Kidman should just forget about awards baiting directors and productions, and focus on material that compliments her as an actress and at the very least is ambitious and interesting.

Having said that Kidman's fiery role of "Aline Bernstein" has a Best Supporting Actress nomination written all over it, that is ofcourse provided the film turns out well and that's a big "if"!

"You were supposed to love me, werent you?", Nicole Kidman-Stoker 2013

Re: Genius thread

She has an Oscar already , so she should just be satisfied with that and not worry about wanting a 2nd or getting more nominations . She should feel grateful to at least one won , look at all the others who never won or were never nominated , if I won an Oscar for my one and only nomination I'd be happy with that. I like that she does films that appeal to her and not all are going to turn out great but it`s better than being a crap actor or actress who just get paid millions of dollars to star in big budget films and really they can`t act for *beep* .

Re: Genius thread

But Kidman herself is very determined to have a second Oscar , & its obvious the way she deals with it whenever she has a performance that might get in for a nomination or a possible win , what she did promoting Rabbit hole , The Paperboy , attending the Oscars ceremony almost every year , i remember she said she was dancing in tears once heard her name listed for the Best actress Nomination for Rabbit hole , & every time they bring up her Oscar winning for the hours she recall how nice to be nominated again & how long it has been
Which I think is great , she definitely deserves another Oscar & multiple nominations , I truly wish one of these recent projects she did be her winning ticket

Re: Genius thread

I hope for Nicole she can get a nomination for any of her up coming films , with Grace of Monaco out of the picture now , maybe Before I go to sleep will be Oscar worthy.

Re: Genius thread

Charlotte_Bless,

I agree with you.

Overview of Kidman's character Aline Bernstein

Buyers remorse? When Thomas Wolfes mediocre plays failed to sell, his wealthy lover, Aline Bernstein, urged him to write a novel and bankrolled his living expenses. After making a name for himself with Look Homeward, Angel, he repaid her by acrimoniously ending their affair, accusing her of sleeping around and deriding her Jewish heritage. Reluctant to call it quits despite his abhorrent behavior, Aline bombarded the coldly indifferent writer with pleading letters and cables and attempted suicide. But when he showed up drunk at her apartment building and launched into an anti-Semitic tirade, she ended the rant by punching him in the face and having him tossed out on the street.

Can't wait I love it when Kidman is all desperate and needy! I hope the role will be a juicier fiery Evelyn Stoker.

Laura Linney joins Genius!

OMG I love her!

Laura Linney, who will join Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman and Jude Law in Genius, which will mark the film directorial debut of acclaimed theatre and opera director Michael Grandage. The movie, which is being produced by Grandages business partner James Bierman, is about Max Perkins, a legendary publishing editor who discovered authors such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Thomas Wolfe and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, who wrote The Yearling.

The film, written by John Logan, is based on a biography of Perkins by A. Scott Berg. Berg wrote that, in his day, Perkins was a hero in the book world.

Unless Kidman has dropped out I'm assuming Laura will play Firth's wife. What a cast this film has assembled.

Edit

It's been confirmed by Baz Bamigboy (dailymail editor) that Linney will play the role of Max Perkin's wife Louise Saunders.

OMG I love her!

I love her too!
Great news!

Re: Laura Linney joins Genius!

I'm not a Linney fan. Along with Amy Adams and Julianne Moore I find her to be one of the most limited actresses ever to get critical acclaim and assume she does purely because America has no great actresses in that generation who can also drum up big box office figures.

"they should give nicole kidman an oscar for being able to show any emotion after THAT much botox".

Re: Laura Linney joins Genius!

Oh this is great news. I can enjoy her in even the most disapointing films like The Other Man. Still wish Fassbender was attached but maybe Law will surprise me. I tend to love or be bored with his performances.

Nothing loved dies.

Re: Laura Linney joins Genius!

I haven't seen a lot of Laura Linney's work and will save my judgement for the actual film. Jude Law isn't a bad actor not one of my favorites but still he worked well with Nicole on Cold Mountain and it's nice when actors can work together at least twice in my opinion.

Nicole's resume is definitely on the up. I haven't actually had chance to see 'Grace' yet as my local cinema didn't screen it so i pre-ordered on DVD. I'm in two minds of whether or not i will enjoy it. I don't pay attention to reviews as some of Nicole's past reviews i've strongly disagreed with and i find i make my own mind up about things whether it's a flop/hit record, number one box office smash, box office flop. critical disaster or critically acclaimed movie. I enjoy what i enjoy.

Back to the thread in general. Genius has a strong cast and Nicole's on a work streak at the moment so i'm very happy and grateful to have new interesting projects.

It would be nice to see Nicole get some more Oscar nominations and a second win but i guess we will have to see. As long as these interesting projects continue i'm happy. At least Nicole is still continuing to be what i would call a damn good good actress!

MWOFs referred to Julianne Moore and Laura Linney earlier, Its funny because I've always felt that Julianne Moore had Laura Linneys career, they could be interchangeable in their film roles, I can see Linney excelling in almost all of Julianne Moores roles. In fact I would go as far as say Laura Linney is the superior actress unlike Moore she knows how to control the hysterics and not go over the top.

Unfortunately for Linney she doesnt have much of a filmography to show for her talents, but Ive always been impressed with her output even from her mediocre films.

Re: Laura Linney joins Genius!

I can't find any official confirmation about Laura Linney joining Genius.
Have You?

Re: Laura Linney joins Genius!

Baz Bamigboye of The Daily Mail tweeted it. I would rely on it since Baz was also the first one to tweet about Nicole's return to the London stage

Re: Laura Linney joins Genius!

Laura Linney might not have the filmography as Nicole does but she already has 3 oscar nominations so she is on par with Nicole as far as that goes. I've always found her work a bit mannered in the same way Cate Blanchett is but she's always good.

Re: Laura Linney joins Genius!

Laura Linney is pretty consistent. I thought she was great in Primal Fear, charming in Love Actually and mesmerizing in Kinsey.

Re: Genius thread

So it seems Pearce and Kidman will be eventually together in a movie. The director has tweeted this:

Excited to announce today Guy Pearce and Dominic West join Colin Firth, Jude Law, Nicole Kidman and Laura Linney in the cast of #GENIUS

Re: Genius thread

Dominic West! Wow what a cast I'm so happy!

Re: Genius thread

Mrs Mills, thats music to my ears!

Infact I've got a great idea,

We can start making songs about all her flops, I'm afraid we'd also need a bonus album because one album wouldn't be able to fit them all.

We'll start with "Don't you "Trespass".

And so on and so forth.

Re: Genius thread

I'm very pleased with the casting :)

Re: Genius thread

Variety has revealed more details about the casting news and movie:

Pearce will take the role of F. Scott Fitzgerald alongside West as Ernest Hemmingway in leading theater director Grandages debut feature film.

Genius will commence filming this October at Shepperton Studios and on location in the U.K.

Tim Bevan is executive producer alongside producers Bierman, Grandage and Logan. Mark Digby is production designer, Ben Davis is director of photography, Jane Petrie is costume designer and Chris Dickens is editor. The pic is produced by Desert Wolf Productions and the Michael Grandage Company.

Do you think Nicole will possibly drop out due to her father's passing?

LAST 3 FILMS SEEN: Perfect Blue (10/10) Before I Go To Sleep (10/10) The Grand Budapest Hotel (7/10)

Re: Genius thread

I'd say it is a toss up. Her role is not huge, so she won't be filming for a significant amount of time. Considering she did Nine so soon after Sunday's birth, anything is possible.

Re: Genius thread

Whatever Nicole decides i'll respect that. If she's not ready then it's perfectly understandable.

Aline Bernstein in a nut shell

It sounds like Kidman will have the biggest supporting role ( if not lead female role), the character sounds very interesting but the 20 year age gap with law?

It was on her return from one of the European journeys that forty-five-year-old Bernstein met and fell in love with twenty-five-year-old Thomas Wolfe. Her passion was thoroughly reciprocated, and a new stage in her life began.

For the next five years, Bernstein and Wolfe waged a war. It was fought on many fronts, not the least of which was between themselves. They also fought Wolfes inner demons, which were many. The pain of a conflict-filled childhood fueled his writing, but it often prevented it as well. Bernstein nurtured and nourished him while he struggled to create his monumental first novel, Look Homeward, Angel.

On another front, Aline fought to keep her passion for Wolfe from destroying her marriage and family. It was a difficult battle, but she was helped by her husbands sensitivity and understanding and by the loving equity she had accumulated in twenty-three years of dedication to him and their children.

In this context, the battles of her professional life often seemed smaller than they were. There was the struggle, for example, that theatrical designers were carrying on to unionize. They were eventually allowed to join the Brotherhood of Painters, Decorators and Paper Hangers Local Number 829, of the American Federation of Laborall except Bernstein. Local 829 did not have any women in its membership and was not interested in changing that situation. Bernstein eventually won that battle and became good friends with many of the brothers.

In 1928, Eva Le Gallienne approached Bernstein about becoming resident designer for her new theater, the Civic Repertory Company. Bernstein threw herself into the project, enabling the cash-poor group to function as a true repertory company by designing a unit set with movable parts that could be adapted easily to a variety of plays.

Wolfes breakup with Bernstein in 1930 left both of them shattered. She went into a deep depression that threatened her family life in a way that the passion of her affair had never done. He went into an emotional tailspin from which he never completely recovered. They continued a rocky friendship for years, in spite of a latent vein of antisemitism in Wolfe that he would mine at moments when he most wanted to hurt Bernstein. He wrote about her and her family in two novels and several short stories. When he died at the age of thirty-eight, the last words he said were a cry for Aline. She later arranged for his letters to her to be included in a collection of his papers at Harvard University with the understanding that a sizable donation be made to the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies.

With time, Bernstein recovered from her depression. She began designing for the111c Theatre Guild and a number of independent producers. Her sets and costumes for plays by Lillian Hellman, Elmer Rice, James Thurber. and others won her innumerable awards. She also founded the Costume Museum, which later became part of the Museum of Modern Art. She began writing and received critical acclaim for her work. May Sarton wrote of her novel The Journey Down, I was up all night reading your book. It is a beautiful piece of work, with the intensity, texture and peculiar sustained excitement of a poem.

Aline Bernstein won a Tony Award for her costume design for the opera Regina in 1949, when she was seventy. It was one of four shows she did that season. In 1953, she did her last design work, the costumes for the Off-Broadway production of The World of Sholom Aleichem. She died in New York on September 7, 1955.

Re: Aline Bernstein in a nut shell

Yep, Thomas Wolfe was in his twenties when he met Aline. The almost 20 year age gap between them is what made their affair so interesting. Law is 41, I guess a lot of make-up and a hairpiece will make him look younger?

Re: Aline Bernstein in a nut shell

He definitely needs a hair piece that's a given!

That's excellent news. So glad she's going ahead and doing it.

Yep, she also mentioned it's gonna be pretty intense. I guess she was referring to her character.

Re: Aline Bernstein in a nut shell

and probably Paddington, as they are still doing casting changes so late in the production.

Well, no. Staunton and Gambon were added to voice characters that do not serve as a major of the plot. It will only take a day or two to finish their work, and I bet they have already completed their work. With the big promotion that is planned in association with Visit London,5b4 then I doubt that the release of the film will be postponed. Kristin Scott Thomas and Kathy Bates were also added the cast of The Golden Compass close to the premiere date.

On a side note, then I'm honestly kind of excited for the film. [Here I would add a smiley, but the new ones are hateful].

First day of filming

Shooting started today. There are pics of Jude Law on set on a West Sussex beach. Also, I suggest following James Bier111cman https://twitter.com/Bierman71 on Twitter. He is one of the movie producers and seems to be posting pictures from the set very often.

Jude Law and Nicole Kidman's onscreen husband on set

As predicted Law is wearing a wig but he does look younger!

No sign of Kidman yet but apparently they've built some Ny looking sets for their scenes in London.

Can't wait to see Kidman, I don't want her to be dowdy, I want her to have a sort of older woman Mrs Robinson glamourpuss vibe going on.
