Yep, the public is bloodthirsty. I'm still a fan - don't know him as a person, but do know he's a great actor and director.

George Clooney gets treated very well by the media, in general. The press likes to keep things going when a negative story comes out about a celebrity-as well as exaggerate how bad it was.

Who is as or more successful as Gibson in the film industry ? Gibson was one of the few actors who could bring in 300 million dollars on his name alone. Gibson directed 4 fantastic films, 2 of which have generated worldwide buzz and are being talked about till today, by every journalist, film critic, film schools and film buffs. No actor has ever built a production company similar to Icon Productions. What resume does Clooney have ? A few good flicks and his looks ? Gibson had it all really. Clooney made a film starring himself and a bunch of A-listers on a budget of 100 million and it was a flop. Gibson made a film with 30 million and unknown actors and made it a billion dollar film. Apocalypto which was released following the scandal and had a small budget and no names made more money than The Monuments Men. The only people who come to mind are Harrison Ford who was more successful as an actor, but lacked the directing abilities and overall Gibson wins. Warren Beatty and Kevin Costner are the only other people that I could say matched Gibson, but Warren retired and Costner began making flops. As for the ones today, there aren't people who can open films successfully based on their name alone. Depp could do it but it only lasted for a few years and he now tries to recycle some of his old characters and films. Cruise did it and it lasted only for a few a few years.Now he only does action films. RDJ relies on superhero films and then there was Banderas in the 90s with a few decent films and Zorro. Dicaprio ( with big directors and famous casts ) does it. Pitt seems to be the only one who can bring in money on his name alone and is steady enough at the box-office.

While Gibson did yell at a Jewish cop while he was drunk, the fact that the media kept going after him for years, proves that it was a personal vendetta. There are actors out there who did far worse things and it was all water under the bridge. They began going after him when The Passion was released, so yes I believe it was a personal vendetta. You see, when an actor manages to produce and finance his own films then manages to steal the top spot at the box-office for a few weeks, that is when the studios have a problem. Gibson had enough recognition and star power to have done this more and more, which would have encouraged other directors and actors to come to him to finance their projects in exchange for artistic freedom or they would have done it themselves, thus being a problem to studios. Financing your own films is fine as long as you do not take over the box-office and screw the studios that are established in the industry. Apocalypto, which was a film in a dead language, with no name non-white actors managed to make 4 times its budget at the box-office with little to not publicity and after the scandal.

Also, if he says something truthful about a particular group of people it's not necessarily hateful, sometimes it's just truthful. For example, black people in the US often act rowdy and uncivilized and violently during their protests, but then complain the police views them with suspicion.

Or a black kid pulls a gun on a cop and gets shot, and all the black people accuse the cop.

That's not me being hateful, I have had good, civilized black friends, but I 5b4 have also met black people where I live who display these same violent characteristics.

I could go on about women, gay people, jews etc as well, never being hateful, just truthful. All ethnicities and nationalities and groups have some characteristics about them which come back in a pattern in a large number of their people.

For example, if I call gay people as people who are really fun at parties, you won't say anything, but if I point out that gay people can sound INCREDIBLY annoying when they complain, you'll tell me I'm homophobic.

Or sometimes, if I say something typically "discriminatory" like "Jews are good at making money" you'll say I'm racist. However, if you look at top businessmen in different industries around the world, you'll often find jews or partnered jews being in them. So it's not racist, it's based on truth.

Well, he does have extreme anger/rage issues. The audio tapes of his rants were revelaed online a few years ago. I'd imagine he's had some help since then though.

As for where the most hate comes from, his arrest back in 2006. I guess a lot of folks viewed him as flawless, and not just an actor.

He's done much less than folks like Lena Dunham though, who openly admitted to sexually molesting her little sister.
