Michael J. Fox : Career in trouble before spin city

Career in trouble before spin city

People always say Parkinson what held from career back from getting bigger but I read his bio and before spin city his career in trouble he had number of flops like greedy and for love or money. Here is link to 1996 article on spin city makes reference to it. http://www.ew.com/article/1996/09/13/spin-city The party line is that Fox is returning to television after a bungled movie career.

Re: Career in trouble before spin city

Mark Hammil is still getting work despite no blockbusters since the star wars trilogy.

His last starring role the Frighteners did fairly well. John Travolta had 15 years of flops and rebounded. Spin City was popular as well, I have no doubt he'd have had a solid career without parkinsons.

Re: Career in trouble before spin city

frightners was actualy a flop. 29 mill off 26 mill budget gained cult following. back in the day when actor went from movie to tv it ment his career was stalling . he had great career but he was box office draw i thought. only hit leads outside of back to the future i can think of are teen wolf secret of my success and doc hollywood. as for spin city to be failry honest i do not rember it being that popular during michael j fo days. it was fairly popular but even during its first 4 years i do not being mentioned as much do not think it ever gained that much buzz. it seemed it is remmebered more for the unusal circumstances that caused its lead to depart much like 8 simple rules. had michael never left it would been on little longer but it would neer be considerd classic show like his show family ties.

And when do you think he made those two movies? After he got Parkinsons. Doc Hollywood (1991) was the last movie he agreed to star in before he became ill and during filming was when his symptoms started.

And Doc Hollywood was a success for him. After that movie, he chose to make movies that he didn't really want to do but put his and family's financial support first because he reckoned he would only be able to be active in front of the camera for roughly 10 more years, so he signed a Universal contract for a three picture deal - For Love Or Money (1993) Greedy (1994) and The Frighteners (1996). He even admitted For Love Or Money was just a lazy attempt by Universal to just try and re-capture the success of The Secret Of My Success, and during that contract he agreed to star in the Disney movie, Life With Mikey (1993), that he knew wasn't good either but again money and just trying to keep himself busy with distraction (he was also drinking too much) was all that mattered to him.

The only two movies that he seems to talk about from that period with any kind of enthusiasm are The American President and The Frighteners. The former was a hit and the latter wasn't - a lot of that was down to the studio because Peter Jackson had always planned for it to be an Halloween release but they decided to release it in the summer against Independence Day and on top of that Jackson warned them about coinciding with the Olympics but the movie and Fox got mostly good reviews.

Fox chose to go back to TV (unusual at that time for movie stars and considered a step back) because he didn't like been away from his family in New Zealand filming The Frighteners and wanted to film closer to them, and because he simply missed the thrill of been in front of a studio audience. (It was his acclaimed performance in The American President that got TV producers making him some offers to do something similar for a sitcom).

Without Parkinsons, he may still have had a succession of flops, there's no way of knowing but it's foolish to say his health played no part in his movie career decline in the early 90's when it was his health that was dictating his career choices.

Re: Career in trouble before spin city

I liked for love or money guilty pleasure. Maybe he would been more active had not been for parksion. this video does say he did spin city cause filming tv series less strenuous. he was not sure how long he could do movies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZYROvqnLtY. But he did mention in his biography his movie career before spin city was not hot either he made poor choices. I think some articles think him goign to spin city was due to bad career moves because those article where made in 1996 2 years before he announced disease. He also made some flops just before spin city just it kept creating illusion his career was not hit. I enjoyed fr 5b4 ightners not so much american president. Here is article in 2000 with him leaving that says his movie career was not as successful as tv career. http://www.nytimes.com/2000/05/24/arts/spin-city-onto-new-stage-michael-j-fox-s-fight-with-parkinson-s-both-personal.html?pagewanted=all r. Fox's career has been more successful in television than in movies. Like some other television stars, his efforts in feature films left him disappointed despite the huge success of the ''Back to the Future'' series. In recent years his films have included such mishaps as ''Life With Mikey'' and ''Greedy.'' But he was also the voice of Stuart Little in the recent hit of that name. Maybe he would made comeback and made more hits had he not had parksion. who knows but to be hoenst his movie career was not that bad . He never became big star people thought he would be after back to future but he kept working got to act with big names so its not bad.

Re: Career in trouble before spin city

Here is another article dating back to 1996 when spin city started that hinted michael j fox movie career not hot before spin city. http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20142297,00.html Michael J. Fox, his movie career having temporarily stalled, returns to TV in this heavily hyped sitcom. agian since this was before he wnet public wiht his disease people thought it was due to his movie career. i think another reason why some artcile make his career out to bad because people expected him to have tom cruise like career after back to future while he was working alot it never panned out that way

Re: Career in trouble before spin city

I liked "Greedy" as well.
