Favorite Directors When You Were 18 Years Old?

Kubrick
Lynch
Coppola
Scorsese
Tarantino

Kubrick is the only one who would make my Top 30-50 nowadays. I've seen so much more since "I learned the truth at seventeen" (once I first got serious about movies).

I guess its like sex. In the beginning, almost any pretty girl is enough for it to be a fun experience, until you keep finding better ones, until one day you think its more fun to watch a great B&w Hungarian movie from the 60s than it is to have sex.

Kubrick, hands down.

There were great B&W Hungarian movies in the 60's?

Re: Favorite Directors When You Were 18 Years Old?

Lynch, because he's crazy and unpredictable.

Re: Favorite Directors When You Were 18 Years Old?

I liked him at 18, then didn't like him by the age of 20, except for his "straight" movies like "The Straight Story" and "The Elephant Man"

Re: Favorite Directors When You Were 18 Years Old?

Those are my favorites too, because of their very difference to his usual surreal stuff.

I'm 18, and my favorite directors include Scorsese, Tarantino, Rodriguez, Stone, as well as Scott and Hughes.

If you don't, well, then you can take a sugar-frosted fuck off the end of our dicks.

Re: Favorite Directors When You Were 18 Years Old?

Peter Weir, Jane Campion, Ingmar Bergman, Billy Wilder, Alfred Hitchcock, Federico Fellini, Barbra Streisand, Paul Mazursky and Fred Zinnemann. Over the years my fascination with Campion, Bergman, Hitchcock and Wilder continued to grow; I'm also having a second awakening of late to Mazursky.

Re: Favorite Directors When You Were 18 Years Old?

Some fine directors - wasn't expecting to see Mazursky! He directed (and co-wrote) my favorite movie, "Harry and Tonto" and I also loved "Next Stop, Greenwich Village"

Re: Favorite Directors When You Were 18 Years Old?

I think I love - or at least strongly like - just about every film of his I've seen, even the kinda disappointing Scenes From a Mall. But An Unmarried Woman has long been in my top 10, and is finally getting the criterion treatment this summer! And I can't watch Harry and Tonto again for a while because when he starts running towards the cat on the beach I have to be given sedatives and carried out on a stretcher!

Re: Favorite Directors When You Were 18 Years Old?

Well, at least you can watch the first 99.9% of "Harry and Tonto" :)

Re: Favorite Directors When You Were 18 Years Old?

I went to uni and lived independently for the first time when I was 18, so I felt free to watch a lot of fucked up shit around that time. Still do.

Favourite directors of that time would have been:

Gaspar Noe
Stanley Kubrick
The Korean guy that directed Oldboy
The Korean guy that directed Memories of Murder
David Fincher.

Now, I have more of an appreciation for Scorsese, Coppola and a couple of films from slightly more obscure directors.

Re: Favorite Directors When You Were 18 Years Old?

Probably Oliver Stone. (My tastes have broadened since then).
