Thrillers/Suspense : Mulholland Drive (2001)

Mulholland Drive (2001)

Thoughts on David Lynch's film?
After a brutal car accident in Los Angeles, California, Rita is the sole survivor but suffers mass amnesia. Wandering into a strangers apartment downtown, her story strangely intertwines with Betty Elms, a perky young woman in search of stardom. However, Betty is intrigued by Rita's situation and is willing to put aside her dreams to pursue this mystery. The two women soon discover that nothing is as it seems in the city of dreams.

Re: Mulholland Drive (2001)

Millions of people come to hollywood to become famous stars. Many of them end up killing themselves because they fail.

Re: Mulholland Drive (2001)

I think that's an exaggeration. There are a lot of screenwriters here trying to hock their scripts though. Also, the dedicated actors can usually get bit parts or work on stage.

Re: Mulholland Drive (2001)

My favourite Lynch movie - and one of my favourite movies! Laura Harring was stunning in this. 🤩

She sure was!

Re: Mulholland Drive (2001)

I love Lynch, and he loves red curtains.

Re: Mulholland Drive (2001)

Yes he does. I'm thinking of Twin Peaks.

Re: Mulholland Drive (2001)

Yes!

Re: Mulholland Drive (2001)

I've been avoiding this film because the premise doesn't interest me. I've enjoyed plenty of other Lynch films to varying degrees, but all of them except The Elephant Man have left me feeling a little bit sick.

Re: Mulholland Drive (2001)

Hmmm. Interesting that you describe it as sick. To me the word "unwholesome" describes Lynch. He creates normal every day situations and gives one the feeling of existential nausea. Maybe we don't interpret it the same way. But I know what you're describing. Still, Lynch is my favorite director.

Re: Mulholland Drive (2001)

I think it is a mix of sound design, visual aesthetic and actor choices that always gets to me. It's never really any of the themes that the films are exploring.

In Dune it was costume design and the 80s "look".

In Eraserhead it was sound design, practical effects and the overall surreal approach.

In Lost Highway it was actors/characters. The way they looked, the way they dressed. Though I think this was my first Lynch film, and it's been some time since I've seen it, and I don't recall if something else unnerved me about it. I don't recall the ideas behind the plot sickening me.

Elephant Man is easily his most accessible film, and I enjoyed it more than any of the others. Eraserhead probably being my 2nd favourite. Lost Highway being least.

Re: Mulholland Drive (2001)

"Dune" was the one Lynch film I didn't like at all. My favorite is "Wild at Heart". I found "Dune" repulsive.

It's just odd that the quality you dislike is what I necessarily like. And again, it's not the overall theme I like. It's atmosphere and detail.

It's simple things like in "Twin Peaks" when Josie, a Chinese immigrant, offers her guests a "cup of joe". For some reason I just found that hilarious. Subtle things.

Re: Mulholland Drive (2001)

To be clear, Eraserhead sickened me, but I did like it. The atmosphere is indeed quite thick. Hence why it's my 2nd favourite of his.

I watched a fan-edit of Dune that is on YouTube that supposedly improves upon it. It's the only version of the film I've seen, and I haven't read the novels. I thought it was entertaining enough for what it is, but no higher than a 6/10.

I'm not really a fan of movies where romance is a driving element of the plot (despite IMDb statistics claiming that it's my 9th highest-rated genre out of 18 genres), so I doubt I'll see Wild at Heart.

Twin Peaks is something I've never got around to, but if I were to watch something else from Lynch, that would be it.

Re: Mulholland Drive (2001)

You actually might like Twin Peaks. Character development over the series will lessen the creepiness. Lol.

There's romance in "Wild at Heart", but it's ancillary. To me the theme was about the occult.

Re: Mulholland Drive (2001)

Did you like Fire Walk With Me?. The 'prequel' to Twin Peaks.

It was much darker and stranger than the TV series.

Re: Mulholland Drive (2001)

Yes. I loved everything Twin Peaks I've ever seen! I was only disappointed with the end of the first series in the 90's though. I felt the evil was occult. It was implied it was aliens but never quite addressed.

Re: Mulholland Drive (2001)

I agree completely. Twin Peaks is my favorite Lynch show.

I love Twin Peaks, Twin Peaks 2 and Fire Walk With Me. They're all strange, unsettling, but brilliant! They've my favorite Lynch productions.

Re: Mulholland Drive (2001)

There's some lesbian action in it

Re: Mulholland Drive (2001)

If I wanted lesbian action, I'd get it on pornhub, xvideos or xhamster.

Re: Mulholland Drive (2001)

The women probably don't look like Laura and Naomi

That's fine I have an east Asian fetish and a craving for poorly filmed amateur porn.

Re: Mulholland Drive (2001)

the lesbian theme is actually one of the main ones here.

Very clever, well-acted, creepy, and depressing film.

One of his best films.

Wonderful cinematography. Also, you’re a pedophile lol

A strange, but fascinating film, typical of this brilliant director's work.
