Oh. My. God. No!! Hilary Swank is awful looking, but moreover I dont think she resembles Judy at all. She has done some fine acting work though.
I cant offer any better ideas, but I will be honest: I dont think any big namr Hollywood actors are up to thr challenge. Look at Cate Blanchett in The Aviator. Her performance as Katharine Hepburn was utterly attrocious, cheap caricature.
That is inevitably what you get when you cast a well known actor as a well known character.
I would tell you the name of the actress who should play Judy, but I dont know it - the public doesnt know her. The best way to go is to search for just the right person and that includes auditioning thousands of unknown women.

I don't know about her acting skills, but I always thought that Danielle Panabaker resembled Judy a bit. In the photo that Dorothy kept in the basket she carried in the Wizard of Oz, I can definitely see the resemblance.

I could see Anne Hathaway play Liza Minnelli, she resembles her more now because of the short hair & big eyes.

I would rather see the STAY ALL NIGHT documentary about Judy's triumph at Carnegie Hall. I'm sure there is a lot more to tell about that night.

My first concern would be if the source material was accurate, and 'Get Happy' [the book] has a couple of moments, the majority is the work of a man who relishes the seamy and inaccurate details.

Correct, I cannot think of ANYONE who would have the same spirit as Judy. In this day and age, it is downright impossible to think that anyone could hold an audience the same way, or even approach an audience the same way.

Did you even see Davis in "Me and My Shadows"? Can't imagine you did, or you wouldn't be asking for someone else to play Garland. Davis did a superb job - as good as you're going to get. It was a brilliant evocation (vs. attempted imitation) of Garland done by a first-rate seasoned actress - unlike1c84 ingenue du jour Ms. Hathaway.

I absolutely agree. I wish they would quit trying to do it. I mean one or two bio pics is enough. Judy Garland was a real force to be reckoned with and no one could portray this woman the way she should be portrayed.

I've always thought that Katherine Heigl resembles Judy Garland. There was a time that she had her hair dyed a kind of Auburn brown, where I first noticed the resemblance. I also agree with the person who said Panabaker. I think either Kay or Danielle could play her.. Maybe at different ages.

I know this thread is from ages ago, but I always kinda t111chought Katherine Heigl reminded me more of Rita Hayworth.again I don't know if it is the facial structure, but something about her.

How has no one said Zoey Deschanel? She's cultivated Judy's vocal tone over the years and the part would be within her acting range.

I'm not sure. I like her but she looks and acts too much like herself. An odd thing to say, I know, but some people either look like someone else or are generic enough that you can watch something and forget that you're watching that actor for a while. With Deschanel, as much as I love her, you are always aware that you're watching her.
Sorry, I'm not explaining that too well really. Suffice to say this, even though I think she's a good actress, you need someone who can make you believe they're Judy for a little while, I couldn't ever forget that I was watching Zooey.

The one actress who comes immediately to mind is Rachel McAdams. Her "Notebook" character, with the 40's styling, looked very much like JG.

I don't think a biopic on Judy could be made anymore. I much prefer to read about Judy's life than view it in a biopic that will not do her justice.

Anne Hathaway way too tall at 5ft 8!!! I'm the same height as Judy and it would freak me out if they picked someone tall to play me. Judy notably small so needs someone under 5ft 1 to play her.

It's already been done miraculously by Judy Davis. It was produced by her daughter Lorna Luft. Davis was remarkable. I knew judy Garland, through Lorna and Liza.

I think Joan Ellison COULD [not should!] play Judy. There will be no attempt to get her story right, but if it HAS to be done, Joan Ellison is the best choice. Joan can be seen and heard in A DATE WITH JUDY. She doesn't play Judy nor does she sing like Judy. Ellison sings in the style of the 1940s and evokes Judy with several of her well known songs. I think Joan Ellison would be the best candidate to play Judy. She certainly looks more like her than most other suggestions as can be seen in these photos.

You are so right, Hilary Swank resembles JG a lot (i always thought so, from the very 1st time when i saw Hilary). And with her talent I'm sure she is just perfect for the part.
