Politics : Thoughts on the failure of Repeal/Replace

Thoughts on the failure of Repeal/Replace

Trump is definately down but not out. He was elected on a complete repleal of Obamacare. He found out that a good chuck of the GOP wasn't really with him on doing that and he failed to get them on board. It's just as well because his bill was just as bad. If he doesn't fully repeal and bring in completely new rules that include insurers being allowed to go across state lines, he will be done.

In a hundred years no one will care.

Re: Thoughts on the failure of Repeal/Replace

I'm not sure he was elected to repeal Obamacare, otherwise Mitt Romney probably would have won in 2012. I think he won because people are just sick and tired of traditional Washington politics and voted, consequences be damned, to burn it all down. This crazy man seemed the most likely to do it.

What we just witnessed exemplifies the disgust most Americans feel towards Congress. This bill sucked. Everyone knows it, but it's still the best they could do. The same thing happened with Obamacare. The process of gathering the necessary votes to ensure passage requires that you appease so many competing factions within Congress, that ultimately what you're left with is convoluted mess that barely addresses the problems it originally set out to remedy, and in fact creates many more in its place (long sentence).

This, for one of the most pressing issues we face. We all know healthcare costs are out of control, the leading cause of bankruptcy in the United States, yet we can't come together to try and put in sensible reforms that we know we all need. Because of politics. These leaders are all cowards who are afraid of what the consequences of compromise would do to their electability back home; afraid of how the extremest media on both sides (Right wing radio, etc) will portray them. So they just balk and instead do nothing.

And that's why we got Trump. I'm not a big fan and much rather would have had Hillary from a decency standpoint, but he represents a change that is probably necessary. Trump didn't play politics in the way we are used to seeing. He was genuine. A genuine asshole, sure, but everyone knows he isn't beholden to corporate special interests, something that can't be said really about any other politician.

Trump just got stronger. The truth is, no matter what they tried to replace it with, it was most likely going to face the same difficulties that Obamacare did, except now a lot of people who had health care would be without it, and they were going to be pissed. Now that's off the table. Maybe his reputation as a great deal-maker has taken a hit, but his 6 bankruptcies before this probably already gave a hint to that. He survived those bankruptcies, and he'll survive Trump/GOPCare. This is the type that survives a nuclear blast.

Remember: Obama was tied down working on Obamacare for the first two years of his presidency, and it prevented him from tackling many other pressing issues that liberals would have liked. Then when it finally did pass, the opposition had grown so fierce and become so organized over that time period, that he no longer had the political capital to move on to these other issues. Trumpcare failed and it only took a week. He has plenty of time to move on. It's so early in his presidency, no one will remember, and those that do will excuse it as just getting used to the job.

Fact is, Obamacare will probably do just fine and Trump will take credit for saving it somehow. Another prediction: many people will choose to believe this brazen lie, because it is just so crazy, you'll be seen as no fun for pointing out its ridiculousness. See: "Mexico will pay for the wall!" "Obama is a Kenyan born Muslim!" "Ted Cruz's dad killed Kennedy!" "Most people ever at an Inauguration!" "We're going to make America great again!" and our current example, "We will repeal Obamacare in the first 100 days!". No one believed in this shit anyway. That's the secret of Trumps success.

It was all just a prank, bro.

Re: Thoughts on the failure of Repeal/Replace

Trump is already making gestures that he is willing to work with Democrats in order to pass his health care reform reform, which is upsetting many of his more conservative supporters. It shouldn't surprise anyone. Donald Trump is a lifelong liberal. He said this on health care back in 2015, on 60 Minutes:

Pelley: How do you fix it?

Trump: There's many different ways, by the way. Everybody's got to be covered. This is an un-Republican thing for me to say because a lot of times they say, "No, no, the lower 25 percent that can't afford private. But–"

Pelley: Universal health care.

Trump: I am going to take care of everybody. I don't care if it costs me votes or not. Everybody's going to be taken care of much better than they're taken care of now.

Pelley: The uninsured person is going to be taken care of. How? How?

Trump: They're going to be taken care of. I would make a deal with existing hospitals to take care of people. And, you know what, if this is probably—

Pelley: Make a deal? Who pays for it?

Trump: —the government's gonna pay for it. But we're going to save so much money on the other side. But for the most it's going to be a private plan and people are going to be able to go out and negotiate great plans with lots of different competition with lots of competitors with great companies and they can have their doctors, they can have plans, they can have everything.
