Glad to hear the R-rating is confirmed (link):

I know, I know: a rating does not a good movie make - but after watching the trailer, I'm still glad the filmmakers went for an adult audience from the very beginning. The cast for this is killer - plus it was written by the Zombieland and Deadpool writers - and I simply love violent alien thrillers (especially when they don't have to make concessions for a more teen-friendly rating). Here's an excerpt from a Collider interview with the producers:

Collider: I’m curious about the rating. Is it PG-13? Is it all R?

David Ellison: No, we said it’s R rated.

C: So it’s R from the get-go?

Collectively: Yes

C: So I’m assuming that means we might be getting some blood and guts of some kind.

[Everyone laughs]

Bonnie Curtis: R for “really good sets.” [Laughs]

David Ellison: Anything is possible…

C: Or someone says “*beep*” twice.

Bonnie Curtis: A non-sexual *beep*, right?

Dana Goldberg: I’m fairly certain someone said “*beep*” twice in this scene [that’s currently shooting] just now. So, yes, it’s going to be rated R, and we have no problem with that.

That does it make it more appealing though it does possibly hinder its box office potential

I actually doubt that. Similarly themed films rarely suffered because of their R-Rating. On the other hand, in the case where they were PG-13, they were not well received by critics and audiences (AvP).

I think both of you have valid points, but in the case of AvP -- that was an R rated franchise combo that was made a PG 13.

Re: Glad to hear the R-rating is confirmed (link):

Eh. The R rating isn't a selling point for me, in fact it's nearly a deterrent. Too many times the R rating is forced -- meaning let's just add a random sex scene here and a topless scene here and some F bombs -- like they are checking boxes on a checklist instead of being more "realistic."

This especially concerns me as Life is looking more and more like a horror film than a thriller. Oh no, we're being chased by something and/or we have a time limit to stop something but we have plenty of time for sex, right? Kind of like the PG-13 kiss, except the PG-13 kiss delays the action a few seconds while the R rated sex scene goes on and on...

And the F bombs. "We have 10 seconds to get this done. Take the *beep* to the *beep* *beep* and put the *beep*ing thing into the *beep* *beep*!" Um, we're all dead now because you took 15 seconds to tell me what to do.

Blood and guts and whatever are fine as long as they don't look campy.

I'm just saying, for every Terminator 2 and Die Hard, we have a lot of crappy R rated movies that would probably be crappy no matter the rating, but might have at least been less stalled/annoying if they'd been PG-13.
