Fantasy : Constantine (2005)
Re: Constantine (2005)
It disappointed me big time. Firstly, Keanu was awfully miscast and secondly, they wimped out on the storyline. The source material was brilliant.
Re: Constantine (2005)
I don't read graphic novels, so I based it exclusively on its own. I loved it. Without having anything to "compare" it with, I really enjoyed it.

Re: Constantine (2005)
Pity. That particular one is one of the best ever written. Garth Ennis wrote it, and I hate it when his material is diluted. He's one of my holy cows.
Had I no first-hand knowledge of the source, I might have liked it more than I did.
Edit: I will say however that the effects were cool, as were Twinton and Stormare.

Re: Constantine (2005)
I actually really liked it too, particularly Peter Stormare and Tilda Swinton.
Re: Constantine (2005)
Yaaassss!
I love Tilda in everything anyway. But that they cast a woman to play Gabriel filled the theory of angels being androgynous and she thoroughly got that down.
Always a fan of Stormare, and the way he descended, with the tar, on his feet, what a wonderful presentation of Satan. Must admit, that was an incredibly unique representation.

Re: Constantine (2005)
I think it's often the case that fans of original source material dislike these adaptations, probably with good reason. I'm like you, I had nothing to base it on so really enjoyed it!
I have been meaning re-watch this for ages, basically if it has demons in it I'm easily hooked.
Tilda has kind of mastered the androgeny thing!

Re: Constantine (2005)
I love Tilda. Did you see Suspiria? She plays an old man!
Did you see Orlando where she keeps changing genders?
I really enjoy her look and her acting.
Have you ever seen Only Lovers Left Alive?
Actually, @Loki have you seen that one ^^ at all?
Dazed I agree, that a lot of people who are into the source material will have their own reasons for not liking the adaptations. I've never been into comic books (or "graphic novels").

Re: Constantine (2005)
Yes I've seen all of those, more than once. Not sure why those are being flung in my face. I can separate love for her from a strong performance in a watered down version of an original. Remember how you felt about certain casting choices in Good Omens? It's worse in the case of Keanu as John Constantine. That plus treating the public like they can't handle what actually happens.
Edit: Ah I see now only the one is being asked about in that fashion. Sorry to have said it was all of them.

I'm intrigued!
Re: Constantine (2005)
It's only the case when the source material is staggeringly good. It absolutely blew me away when I read it.
Re: Constantine (2005)
I love how he can only enter hell standing in a bowl of water and holding a cat!
(Or something?)
Have you ever read the 30 Days of Night graphic novels?

Re: Constantine (2005)
Yes, but only the first two.
Re: Constantine (2005)
Me too, I watched the film first then got the first book, closely followed by the second. The second film was terrible but I loved the first film, mainly for the very different portrayal of the vampires. I thought it was a fantastic horror film. I also know that not many people agree with me!
Re: Constantine (2005)
Yeah. Again I had the books before the movies, but somehow I had low expectations for the movie (only saw the first one) so I wasn't wailing about "THE SOOOUUURCE!" I know it's annoying when the graphic novel readers whine about that.
Re: Constantine (2005)
I don't think it's annoying at all, it's understandable.
It's probably annoying that people like me love these films!
Who would have been your ideal John Constantine?
** Will my psychic powers be correct?**

Re: Constantine (2005)
I don't find it annoying that they are liked. I tend to hope if it's well received that people would chase the source material to read. For me it's more a case of "of you liked this OMFG YOU WOULD LOVE THE ORIGINAL!"
My pick would have been Ewan McGregor. He'd have absolutely nailed it.

Re: Constantine (2005)
Aw I was sure you'd say yer man.
Re: Constantine (2005)
Nah…John Constantine is working class, blonde, snarky, cynical Liverpudlian asshole. I would think Tom Hiddleston more the James Bond type.
Re: Constantine (2005)
I meant yer other man Fassbender! But he's fairly posh too.
Re: Constantine (2005)
Oh my real movie boyfriend! I thought you meant Hiddles because of the heavy giffage.
Re: Constantine (2005)
Both rather delish either way.
Have you ever come across JJ Feild? He could be Hiddles twin.

☝ said... Both rather delish either way.YES! He's in TURN, and I thought the same thing. Definitely should be cast aa brothers!

Re: Constantine (2005)
Fassbender could nail that, too. I just remember who I thought would have been perfect at the time. I didn't know of Fassie back then. I think 300 came out after. That was my first Fassbender film.
Re: Constantine (2005)
I'm not a big fan, but I'll credit it with introducing me to A Perfect Circle. Its religious themes and questions seemed to resonate more with a friend I saw it with on a more recent viewing. The rest of the movie is pretty average.
Re: Constantine (2005)
I love that movie. Sure, it not as the same as comic books to many bitter fans, but the movie sure did have some fine cast and they all played their roles pretty well. My favorite part is the confrontation between Gabriel and Lucifer (LOVE that character. Wish it was longer. ).
Sure, the story is lacking a bit, but it's still an entertaining film. I hated it underperformed in box office because i watched the movie like 20 times.
And Tilda! She was great.
I hope a bear throw a book at you, moon at you, and do a tap dance wearing a thong and leather boots.

Re: Constantine (2005)
I loved this movie! That's all I want to say.
Re: Constantine (2005)
Underrated and underappreciated by many, but not by me!
