Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi : Are you friggin serious

Are you friggin serious

Do the people at imdb honestly not understand how much traffic is generated by their message boards?

Come on, imdb.

Re: Are you friggin serious

They understand exactly how much. Which is why they decided to shut it down. It's just the same 200 discharge drenched nerds everyday. Not exactly a bustling community.

Re: Are you friggin serious

Nah. Ever since Amazon acquired IMDb they never have been able to make a sizable profit off the website. Besides, Amazon believes that people can still write reviews on their own website (Amazon.com). They're getting rid of the boards because of the cost which keeps to maintain them is more than they wish to pay. The boards are very popular.

Yep.

Perpetual outrage is the most popular religion today.

Re: Are you friggin serious

Yeah it is actually a really small community, I see the same names on almost every movie or TV board I frequentwhich is bizarre because you'd think with a million different shows & movies there would be millions of different users. Apparently that is not the case.

I am really going to miss these boards, been coming here since the mid 90's. It's a lifetime for some.

Re: Are you friggin serious

What about those who only check out to read other people's comments without bothering to participate?

Re: Are you friggin serious

God help them! They may all follow each other off the Kalaupapa Cliffs!

Re: Are you friggin serious

They probably understand that their message boards have become so infested with trolls that any attempt at bringing back active moderators would be a huge expenditure.

Re: Are you friggin serious

Probably.

Lose the Game!!!!!!!

Re: Are you friggin serious

as naive and clueless as ever, and always ignorant enough to point fingers, eh?

If the kiddy legend of the evil trolls forcing them to shut down suddenly were true, you would be the textbook example of one of these critters. Don't even deny it - shut up, go home and rethink your life (and listen to some less trashy music FGS!)

Re: Are you friggin serious

^ case in point.

No one is interested in actual film discussion anymore. It's nothing but "kiddy" this and "shill" that.

Re: Are you friggin serious

I'll give you film discussion Grindo - discuss this:

- Rehash: Within the Saga TFA is the most unoriginal and uncreative entry to date in a series mostly known for its imagination;
- TFA rehashes 90% of ANH's plot beats, the rest is OT (father-son conflict; Emperor etc) and some EU; the PT world building is mostly ignored;
- TFA uses locations, designs and vehicles from previous films hardly adding anything new (except BB-8, others such as Kylos sabre are EU materials);
- the World Building and explanation is shoddy/non-existent - we do not get any idea how and why after RotJ we now have a Bigger, Bader & Dumber Empire again, or what the FO is and how the Republic and the Resistance work (I know: "Kids don't care", but grownups do!);
- all of this resulting in a stale and stagnant, seemingly shrinking universe ("Shrinking Universe" complaint);
- all about Death Star 3, including physics and functioning, is blatantly unoriginal and stupid;
- CHARACTERS: the character portrayals and actions are incongruent with their character backgrounds,
*including racial stereotypes (droid plz, black guy tasered by droid, while accused of theft by white person, drinks with animals etc)
*blatant Mary Sue writing, which is the writings central problem as it sucks out competence and believability of characters and events (e.g., infamous Rey/Leia hug scene);
* old canon characters seem to be out of character, and only serve to glorify/legitimize the new characters (need a few examples?);
* fun fact: that even applies to spaceships, e.g., the MF should be the most famous, recognizable, priceless museum-piece in the universe, but is just standing around like "garbage";
- characters are overpowered or too weak, resulting in Video Game like scenes,
*such as Poe shooting down more than 10 Tie Fighters/ground groups within one shot, or
* Rey saving the day in any situation with untrained ad hoc abilities, including Force power-ups, especially when defeating the main antagonist;
* the (trained from childhood) soldier Finn is just an incompetent, black bumbling fool and at the end revealed to be a space janitor he seems mainly be there to show that other characters are superior - e.g., cannot fly ships, cannot understand languages, cannot fight, must be rescued all the time etc
* some characters such as Kylo are inconsistent, first extremely powerful, then pathetically weak (when facing the untrained scavenger Rey)
- the father/son relationship is badly developed; we never see Han/Ben interact before, or get an understanding that Kylo is really struggling with having to kill his father his motivation for going dark side is murky at best;
- The bad guys are poorly developed and just pale imitations of previous baddies (Snoke, Captain Phasma need I say more?)
- STORYLINE/SCRIPT: the main story line is broken: first it's about getting a map to Luke (like in ANH), then it's about destroying DeathStar 3, the map-plot is then suddenly resolved by a deus ex machina event (R2 suddenly awakening, having the map
- a lot of the CGI is shoddy, the dogfights look like video games, characters like Snoke, monsters or Maz look fake in context;
- the scrip excels at creating logical inconstancies (plot holes, e.g. Han taking BB-8 into Maz cantina resulting its destruction), deus ex machina events, constant coincident and good old bad writing - e.g., the sword fight starts with a plot hole and end with a deus ex machina earth hole (chasm opening itself to save Kylo from Rey), in between is bad writing violating common sense, the established lore and Force rules.
- the dialog is badly writing and laughable, often just created to create cheap lowbrow humor;
- EXECUTION: a lot of the CGI is shoddy, the dogfights look like video games, characters like Snoke, monsters or Maz look fake in context;
- the direction is rushed (relentless pacing);
- there is a propensity for overacting, especially with the new characters.
- the action scenes and set pieces are just adequate there is nothing remotely as iconic as in the OT (DS trench run, AT-AT attack, speeder bike race/DS attack) or even the PT (pod race, Clone War/Geonosis battle, Coruscant battle etc);
- the music is just adequate, like the film lacking the old inspiration for the most part;
- Many many nitpicks/ lens flares

So, now what are your contributions to film discussion except for hot air, finger pointing, adhoms, hypocritical generalizations, fallacies and ignore chamber hiding? I tell you: there never was one coming from you since your registration in 2009!

Re: Are you friggin serious

^ Again, case in point.

Posters like this are exactly why the boards are being shut down.

Re: Are you friggin serious

Agreed grindover , I would of liked to of continued having open discussions on the TFA board but the likes of Tristan have pretty much ruined it for everyone, this is the only reason I'm happy the boards are closing down, I won't have to witness Tristans hate filled ramblings along with the other village idiots .

Re: Are you friggin serious

I took my real film discussions over to sites like birth.movies.death and slashfilm a long time ago. They're actually populated by fans of film who want to have constructive dialogue with other fans.

I mainly stuck around here partly out of habit, and partly to vent my frustrations at the type of scum who have allowed these boards to deteriorate to its current form. (Joby Dimms, carrot, lindewell, thebricks, et al.)

At least aredo3604gif was funny, but he hasn't even posted on any boards in over a month. Still, him I'll kind of miss.

Re: Are you friggin serious

Lindewell, what a dickhead, strange hate for Kathleen Kennedy , aredo, every film she hates that others love are paid for , indeed, many memories of far out strange people with strange thoughts.

Re: Are you friggin serious

Yep. Though it is amusing that Tristan can't be bothered to even look in a mirror.

Re: Are you friggin serious

They probably understand that their message boards have become so infested with trolls that any attempt at bringing back active moderators would be a huge expenditure.
It's more of an inability to mitigate between the pro-censorship folks and the anti-censorship folks. Most of what any of the board users do is complain about each other. Managing this stuff not a "core competency" of the site, and even less of an interest. The messaging system software is also really out of date, but they're not equipped to upgrade it.

Re: Are you friggin serious

I thought the main point of the internet - was to communicate, ya know CHAT! We're on a MOVIE WEBSITE so why can't we CHAT ABOUT MOVIES??!!!!

Seems crazy to scrap all the boards. IMDB could have come to a compromise. Keep one or two boards running - for six months - and see how it goes. But nope, it's full scale wipe out. Meh.

And who cares if there are a few posters. They keep the boards alive. It's not as if most boards are really quiet. There is a vibrant online community on IMDB and the admins (execs at AMAZON) couldn't care less. Very sad.

Re: Are you friggin serious

I agree. That is why I like these boards. You can have an open discussion about past films or upcoming films that you can't on Facebook or Twitter. Sure there are trolls, but they are everywhere. I agree that IMDB should of found some kind of compromise.

"Facts are necessary, without them you must remain silent."

Re: Are you friggin serious

IMDB made an effort to have loads of boards. Boards about sport and politics and 3D. Almost every aspect of life topics are covered here on the boards. I don't think I've ever seen another message board website with so many boards! They've gone from too many boards to none at all. It's a crazy all of nothing approach.

Mr. Needham sees this site as a library, and for a number of reasons, he is choosing to renovate it in such a way as to demolish the conference rooms, the cafe and other recreational/business areas. Also, just because the Internet has communications as its main point doesn't mean that every computer system on it is there to serve people who wish to communicate directly with each other. A lot of sites are basically blogs for the owners' podcasts, broadcasts or multicasts. Those might not be the greatest sites, but they're there.

Re: Are you friggin serious

I doubt it. But they'll soon understand when their hits fall off of a cliff.

Re: Are you friggin serious

I agree with you 100%

It's a pity they don't seem to recognize that. I've been on here since long before the trolls took over.

It's too bad they can't figure a way to keep the boards around for we legitimate folk!

Re: Are you friggin serious

When you factor in troll duplicate accounts like sledge or sjw duplicate accounts like ruby then it doesnt leave a whole lot of actual users left.

Where will they get their 10 seconds of attention from after this?
