I think that science lays waste to many innovations that are thought to be categorized as 'cute, interesting or a failure'.
Early film just might have been thought of as no more than an interesting thing to do.
The fact that there is a surviving result of a random experiment is what makes it important to preserve the film.
If everyone were doing this at the time, the film would still be nothing more than a passing interest.
