Okay, don't let this get weird just because I'm a guy.

Some here know I lost my first wife to Ovarian Cancer after a six year battle.

She was initially diagnosed at stage 3b… that's pretty far along. And she told every woman she knew how to get it found out earlier than she found out.

This is what she would tell you. At this point, there's no simple, foolproof blood test to detect it (PAP doesn't detect it), sooooo… a yearly pelvic exam is necessary, and as she and her gynecologist used to joke about, every woman should make sure her gynecologist palpates her ovaries thoroughly during the exam and if the doc is doing it correctly, it will probably feel like they're checking your tonsils from the wrong end.

Just their little joke, using humor to diffuse the seriousness of Ovarian Cancer a little.

An unpleasant exam for sure, but I can assure you it's much less unpleasant than Ovarian Cancer.

Sorry to hear about your wife, but this is one of the reasons I don't want to go in there. I'm f—ing scared to death they are either going to find some lump in my breast or on my ovaries.

I don't care about the unpleasantness of the exam. I just don't want them to find anything. I'm f****** scared to death.

Did she go for yearly pelvic exams prior to her diagnosis?

I'm not sure if she had yearly pelvic exams, but they were not done correctly/thoroughly if she did. Probably her GP did them.

Cancer (and cancer treatments) are things you should do everything possible to avoid.

Don't be afraid they might find something. If found early enough, the treatment will be minimal… if you wait until it's more advanced, the treatment can be very difficult.

Go have the exam/s… it's much better than waiting. Trust me on this.

Plus, if everything checks out, you can breathe a sigh of relief.

Same with colonoscopies… lots of 40+ year olds don't want to have their first for any number of reasons, but from what I've heard, colon cancer is one of the most horrible ways to die.

I don't want the treatment. That's the whole point. I'd rather just die.

Because I don't want any more drama or stress in my life. Leukemia already runs in my family so I already have to worry about that. I don't want to have to worry about this too. I just want a peaceful life. I don't want doctors exams. I don't want any additional tests because they found something.

I already have to worry about money and making ends meet. And how I'm even going to support myself during retirement if I live that long. My future is very bleak already.

But isn’t that what regular check ups are for? To prevent stuff?

The only test that ever prevents anything is a colonoscopy if you do it early enough. And I get one of them every 10 years. I'd rather go through 10 more of those than have the stress of going through another mammogram.

Every woman seems to hate getting mammograms. What do they do exactly in the process? Is it just uncomfortable, or extremely painful?

Even if the treatment is very minimal? Sometimes it's just oral meds. Plus, you'd rather know… trust me on that… and if there is something, the doctors give you options.

I know it's easy for me to say but do whatever you need to do not to let your fear take over

Stress is very destructive to our bodies. If being tested will give you peace of mind, then by all means you should. You're getting good advice here and I understand your fear about your future but our futures are uncertain, the only thing that's certain is right now

Thank you. I just didn't want to have to go now - or next week to be exact. I wanted to wait another year - possibly two. I'm just so stressed out about other ailments I have going on that I don't want to deal with this right now.

I thought when I originally made an appointment a few months ago that I was going to want to go on HRT because I was and I still am having terrible hot flashes. I tried all natural stuff and it isn't cutting the mustard. I was also curious if the other symptoms like internal tremors we're being caused by that too cuz I saw some message forum where a bunch of women with peri menopause were talking about that symptom. I figured I'd try that HRT for a month and then see how things go and see if it took care of the tremors too. Then if it did then I'll know I don't have multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease without having to get a brain MRI. Yeah I was terrified to have that done too. Plus also weird sensations that every time my heart beats it feels like it's shaking my whole body like an earthquake.

But then fast forward to 2 weeks ago I did a research and found all these women that were on hormone replacement therapy wound up getting breast cancer. I went on a breast cancer message forum and researched it in a lot of them had taken it before diagnosis of cancer. So now I am definitely not going to take that stuff and figured I'd just wanted to shine on the whole obgyn appointment and get the pelvic exam and a Pap done at another time with a primary care doctor so it's a One-Stop place for all my ailments. Actually an internal medicine doctor.

My primary is an internist. Was your mom on HRT?

She was on HRT after a hysterectomy for endometriosis. But she never got breast cancer. She died of leukemia.

It is a scary feeling. Have you thought about taking a friend with you? They could wait out in the waiting room while you're being examined in case you get bad news. I hope there isn't bad news…
