Sinister : Unintentionally Funny

Unintentionally Funny

This movie starts scary and promising.

5 minutes later it turns out to be unintentionally funny.
-attic scene - tropical animals running around there, main character falling through the attic floor, hilarious scene. it's too cold to be outside yet there are tropical animals around and no-one cares to exterminate them.
-screaming kid - screams like hyena - that was over-exaggerated and wtf moment.
- TV and media - film roles of murders just waiting to be found out - starting as family movie cuts to murder scenes in you tube manner of few seconds plainly edited as if murderer is high quality film technician,
main character watching his own tv interview as if it's for the first time, boogie-man moving on screen when you don't watch: something like mona lisa
- boogie man jumping in and out of everything, more funny than scary.
- therapeutic talk with a cop who don't believe in ghosts - why not let that cop walk around the attic?
- you have all gadgets at disposal, but however you just don't use them to film the phenomena around the house.
- hysteric wife, who just happens to realize, after approx 10 years, she married a writer.

Conclusion:
Bad and lame movie.

Supernatural elements are for kids, not scary at all. they are turn off for horror movies. I always looked it like this - if supernatural elements were real - why they don't occur on national tv during some live tv event?

They are the sign of Bughuul's presence.

Supernatural elements are for kids, not scary at all. they are turn off for horror movies. I always looked it like this - if supernatural elements were real - why they don't occur on national tv during some live tv event?

This has to be one of the stupidest things I've seen this week.

Re: Unintentionally Funny

Bughuul

so the main character takes those signs as natural and normal as if they occur on Oprah show every week.

This has to be one of the stupidest things I've seen this week.

or your mind is limited and everything outside that limit you perceive as stupid?

Re: Unintentionally Funny

He learns later what that means, but he's still skeptical.

Says a person who wrote this:

Supernatural elements are for kids, not scary at all. they are turn off for horror movies.

Re: Unintentionally Funny

yes, they are turn off,
I think about it like this:
like erotic scenes - if you want sex, film some porn with all details shown, why put it in a regular movie, hidden and short?

if director is low on ideas - there will be film about mafia - they can create drama from nothing, final result is boring flick.

likewise,
people who make horror movies, if they don't have an idea what to film - they'll shoot about supernatural elements because there are no rules, it's easy to make, and in the final, it is boring and unconvincing.

and still, if you see scorpio/snake, aren't you affraid that there are more of them - before you know this is boogie ghost?
also, if this is supernatural scorpio - then why it's behaving like regular scorpio? shouldn't it have supernatural powers like flying around, talking, shining in the dark and silly stuff like that. and yet, this supernatural scorpio / deamon is too easy to be killed and crushed. sorry, this premise about supernatural tropical elements and other stuff in this movie - that is simply ridiculous.

Re: Unintentionally Funny

Why should it have powers?

You're such a big hypocrite.

Re: Unintentionally Funny

Why should it have powers?

if it's supernatural, it should have powers. in Poltergeist (1982), they levitated stuff around and they were shining all around.
Linda Blair among other things twisted her head around in Exorcist (1973).

in this movie, with their special powers they can edit old movie roles. that's funny :D

You're such a big hypocrite.

look, obviously you worked on this movie. there is always room for improvement. if you can pick some of the things i say, maybe it will help you next time creating better film ;) story is ridiculous - like some B movie, however everything else in the movie is just fine, it is work of professionals done with quality.

Re: Unintentionally Funny

Now it's obvious you're a low level troll :P

Re: Unintentionally Funny

i made promise to myself that i'll never give one star to any movie on imdb.
i forgot that.

No. He's pretty clearly confused. But what exactly is he supposed to do?

or your mind is limited and everything outside that limit you perceive as stupid?

No. It's true. " if supernatural elements were real - why they don't occur on national tv during some live tv event" is a stupid idea. The obvious answer in this case would be, because no character even visits a live television broadcast.

Why did you even bring this up? Seeing as it has nothing to do with anything in the movie.

No, he didn't seemed confused at all. That's what I look like when train doesn't come on time. If I saw something out of ordinary I would talk about it and leave.

Because the whole movie is based on supernatural unbeliveable element that only <8 grade schooler could believe in it. If supernatural creature exists it would appear sooner or later in public. Writers should use more logic when writing the script.

You're a bad observer of acting then. Or you look confused when your train is late. One or the other.

And you have a really weak will if you would give up on your current work just because you saw an arachnid out of place. What are you going to say? "Holy *beep* honey, I just saw a scorpion. There must be some supernatural forces at work here. Let's bail"?

Because the whole movie is based on supernatural unbeliveable element that only <8 grade schooler could believe in it.

This only proves you're a bad movie watcher. You let your personal beliefs get in the way of enjoying a movie. If I disliked every movie with unbelievable elements I would never watch anything but documentaries.

I mean, have dragons ever existed? No. But I still enjoy Reign of Fire and Game of Thrones. Does God exist? Maybe, maybe not. But regardless of the answer I still enjoy The Prophesy. Your narrow mindedness is going to close your eyes to some great movies if you only choose to watch movies that conform to your beliefs.

If supernatural creature exists it would appear sooner or later in public. Writers should use more logic when writing the script.

Complete and utter *beep* That's like saying "If aliens existed, we should be perfectly aware of their existence." Except this ignores the fact that space is *beep* HUGE and we've only just started to observe it, cosmologically speaking.

Not to mention you seem to completely ignore the nature of this creature. It exists primarily in another universe. How would you catch this creature in public when it only enters our world to take its victims? It's not a vampire or some other such monster that share reality with us.

And don't use the word logic. You have no idea what it means.

Re: Unintentionally Funny

As I said before, I am not the theme here.
I gave this movie low grade and I explained my reasons why.

I mean, have dragons ever existed?

Dragons, vampires or creature from another universe would not meddle with video and tape themselves, would they?

*beep*

you can swear all you want but this film sucks big time.

Re: Unintentionally Funny

This was just plain bad. Lazy movie-making and cheap, shoddy script. Annoying wife always yelling and fighting with her husband, who is a good guy, but is overzealous to create a hit. Can't fault him for that! The story was so stupid and over-simplified that it was neither scary nor interesting. 3 out of 10.

Re: Unintentionally Funny

Yeah, unintentionally funny is what I thought of it too.

Re: Unintentionally Funny

I thought the film was decent, but the scene where the ghost kids were creeping around behind Ellison and he turns around and just misses seeing themthat was comical, I gotta say.

Jesus loves you, but only as a friend.

Re: Unintentionally Funny

I hated when it turned into "creepy kids". Movie lost all of its traction with me right then.

I don't even see how that little girl could be strong or heavy enough to get her drugged family standing up with ropes around their necks.

But on "unintentionally funny", I did think the entire hanging family doing "walking on air" was silly.

Re: Unintentionally Funny

- tropical animals running around there,

LOL you got me all excited for a moment. I was like did we just watch two different movies? I didn't see any chimpanzees, Toucans, frogs, cheetahs, etc.

All I saw were some snakes and I'll tell you one thing they don't just live in the tropics.

Re: Unintentionally Funny

Wikipedia

The greatest diversity of scorpions in the Northern Hemisphere is to be found in the subtropical areas lying between latitudes 23 N and 38 N.

Re: Unintentionally Funny

I agree. I thought the hanging beginning was funny and felt like it was from scary movie . Four people hung from the same tree branch with This really terrible corny music playing . The whole movie was riddled with horror movie cliches .

Re: Unintentionally Funny

Wow, okay, to each his own, I found that scene with the parents and the children still alive while being hung to be QUITE disturbing. All of the home movies that he found were disturbing to me as well. I didn't find any horror movie chiches in this film such as 'the black guy dying first', sex crazed teens, topless ditzy blonde, etc, for me this film was quite refreshing because it didn't have to those things. It also goes aganist the grain in having a down ending, which is STILL rare form these days where a horror film would have the balls to do something like that especially actors the caliber of Ethan Hawke.

OP, no offense but I'm not sure you were paying attention to this film. The scorpions were a sign of Bughuul's presence, the boy in the box is a red herring, you're shown this to make you think the boy would be the one that Bughuul would go after. Trevor always sleepwalks and has night terrors where he wakes up in strange places. It DOES go somewhere, it leads your attention of the girl, who is the one that Bughuul basically brainwashes to kill her family. No, the girl probably didn't poison her brother with coffee but no doubt some other kind of drink for him. Whatever she used was the same thing the other kids used in those films. Bughuul also leaves the film footage around to get the curiosity of Hawke's character. If you didn't like the film, to each his own, I know many and I mean, MANY that found those footage disturbing & eerie. Also, I thought the twist in the film was quite good, certainly a good shock. yes.gif

Re: Unintentionally Funny

OP, no offense but I'm not sure you were paying attention to this film. The scorpions were a sign of Bughuul's presence

Yeah, but wasn't OP's point that Hawke, understandably not connecting the scorpion with some whacko ghoul's presence, didn't do anything further to investigate why a scorpion would be in his house. If I moved into a new house and saw a scorpion, my concern would be that there may be more and if I had children, wouldn't I get some sort of pest control to hunt them down and exterminate them (scorpions not kids. Although)

So put some spice in my sauce, honey in my tea, an ace up my sleeve and a slinkyplanb

Re: Unintentionally Funny

I didn't like the movie very much either, but that's about the only thing I agree with.

Supernatural elements are for kids, not scary at all. they are turn off for horror movies. I always looked it like this - if supernatural elements were real - why they don't occur on national tv during some live tv event?

Yeah, I get that not everyone likes supernatural elements, but that last part what the hell? I would rather ask why would they occur.

You also say it doesn't take anything to make a supernatural horror movie cause they don't have to make sense. But if it doesn't make any sense, it's probably not good, so making a good supernatural movie does take planning. Of course if you take it literally, it won't make sense if you don't believe in supernatural, but what comes to plot, that has to make sense to make a good movie. It could be that because you find the whole theme riddiculous, you don't see the plot sensible anyhow. I just think movies as movies, and in the movie world supernatural can take place without giving me the feeling it's impossible and silly, if it's made well.

You could just as well put together an illogical plot where a normal person murders people with no motive or with a dumb motive. I don't usually even find random killing scary, was it logical or not. Usually it's not. Think about The Strangers or The Purge, their plot makes so much sense and they are so spooky not. I don't find most things scary, but those films are still mostly just stupid and badly executed. Not convincing, not scary.

Also it's kind of unlikely that something Jigsaw like killing with crazy traps would really happen, but it doesn't make everything in those movies seem absolutely riddiculous. Sure it's a bit easier to direct a supernatural movie without seeming implausible than this kind of movie, since if everything was made with thinking if it's really likely or possible, movies would be boring and all the same. There's a bit more room with supernatural theme. But I've seen plenty of supernatural movies that were bad, just because the plot wasn't good and seemed like they just desperately tried to make something. Same with other horror genres.

Btw, the cop actually said he does believe in supernatural. He stated he would never sleep in a house where murdered family once lived.

I didn't find this movie funny but more boring. I was waiting for something that never happened. I've already seen too much investigation movies with jumpscares and the ending wasn't surprising, I pretty much expected it.

Re: Unintentionally Funny

yes, you are right. but i remember now a supernatural movie from the early 80s about some unseen force that was investigates in a hospital or some laboratory, it was filmed based on true events. that is a good supernatural movie since it was more less real, and as i said, it happened more less in front of "live tv event" as i called it. so yeah, not all supernatural movies are silly, I apologize.

Re: Unintentionally Funny

No real need to apologize even if all of them were silly to you, everyone can have their opinions and I just wanted to share my view. That movie sounds interesting though, I'm gonna have to try and find it.

Re: Unintentionally Funny

I found it - The Entity (1982)
http://www.imdb.com/board/10082334/

In real life the scientists never witnessed any of the electrical activity described by the victim, physical attacks or many of the other phenomena. It was subsequently revealed that the victim had been sexually molested as a child and it is suggested that she may have been delusional and self harming to act out her trauma, using instruments such as false teeth or an accomplice to inflict wounds which she would seem incapable off. However the scientists did witness the terrible stench, inexplicable shaking of walls, cupboards flying open of their own accord and objects falling out.

Re: Unintentionally Funny

Indeed, it made me laugh at how stupid it was. It works so much better as a comedy.

Bruce Lee was real. Batman was never real.

Re: Unintentionally Funny

!!! Warning, this post is full of spoilers, I'd put them all in a 'spoiler' tag but the whole message would be blacked out. !!!

OP I totally agree. Everything about this movie was very nicely made except the most important part, the plot. That absolutely sucked. So badly I could barely watch it. It was very predictable, like an even less scary rehash of 'children of the corn'.

Ethan Hawke was excellent, all the actors did a good job. Except the kids. The kids were so 'not at all scary' they should have been removed from the movie and been totally reworked. For instance, what if they didn't have any lower legs or hands, the legs/arms just gradually turn into mist, so they sorta resemble the stereotypical 'ghost', but with a modern edge. Also it would have been cool if they had a 'super 8' effect applied to only the kids when they're in the scene, so they seem to be displayed at a different frame rate, with dust/scratchs/ticks/pops/etc.

I think what would have made the kids scarier is if they ditched the 'ssssh' pose, which was lame looking, and instead they had really big, cheerful smiles on, sweet and innocent looking, except they're covered in blood and playing with the dead bodies of their family.

I wasn't bothered by the 'tropical animals' They seemed out of place but a little bit like they were supposed to be. Maybe it would have been better if he keeps finding these creatures in the house(s), in scary places, like the snake crawls out of his pillowcase one night when he lays down to go to sleep. Or he's in the shower, everythings normal, he closes his eyes to rinse out shampoo, and when he opens them again, he's covered in scorpions, the bath tub is full of them, they're everywhere.

The suggestion below is a kinda graphic so i'm wrapping it in a 'spoiler' tag.

Ethan Hawke's character could be giving his wife oral sex, and one of the coral snakes could crawl out of her vagina and into his mouth.

Re: Unintentionally Funny

Interesting! But pardon me, what tropical animals were walking around, and what scene? I do remember the dog.

Re: Unintentionally Funny

Just some snakes and Scorpions.

Not the second coming of Jumanji otherwise this poster probably would have titled this topic as "Intentionally funny".

Re: Unintentionally Funny

If films had to be 100% logical, believable, true, etc, they'd all be terrible and no one would watch them. We get it, you didn't like the film, we get it there's no reason to point out the obvious plot holes other than to try and make yourself seem smarter.

Most of what makes horror films scary and creepy is the illogical; things that are out of place and don't make sense. People fear what they don't understand and things that don't make sense.

Re: Unintentionally Funny

I believe there is a distinction between lazy script and common sense and what it seems illogical. if you are totally out of idea, uninspired and without passion you will write a movie about either mafia or supernatural thriller/horror as these two themes write themselves out. and yes, this is prime example of one.
