It Happened One Night : Modern Comparison?

Modern Comparison?

I was wondering what would be a modern comparison for this timeless movie. I'm well aware that practically every single romantic comedy is a possible comparison for this movie, I'm just looking for something a little more precise. For movies in the 90s and 00s, I was thinking of movies like While You Were Sleeping or Two Weeks Notice. Any other movie ideas will help, thank you.

Re: Modern Comparison?

In my humble opinion there is no film that compares with I.H.O.N. Try as I might, there is no way I could improve upon this production. It's the perfect movie!

Re: Modern Comparison?

Well, if you're looking for a direct modern comparison, I direct you to Rob Reiner's charming and funny "The Sure Thing." While not as good as "It Happened One Night," it is good film on it's own.

Re: Modern Comparison?

With all due respect to filmmakers then and now, I don't feel that IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT has ever been equaled. I personally list this as one of the ten films I most enjoy.

Re: Modern Comparison?

Since I wholeheartedly agree with you and it's also one of my ten favorite films, I am curious as to what some of your other favorites are.

Re: Modern Comparison?

"The Sure Thing" is one of my favorites.

Re: Modern Comparison?

The Sure Thing was good

Re: Modern Comparison

"Can't Buy Me Love" from 1987.

"'Extremely High Voltage.' Well, I don't need safety gloves, because I'm Homer Simpsozzzzzzz--" - Frank Grimes

Re: Modern Comparison?

Sleepless in Seattle is a romantic comedy. They should make a remake of this picture. It is my favorite and a classic. The heart and soul never changes in a romance and this can not be improved. For being thrown together in 4 weeks and the actors not really wanting to make it adds to the attitude of the movie. I also heard that Claudette was talked into it because Clark was the leading man and she wanted to work with him. I heard that on the Turner Classic Movie Channel that aired the movie a few weekd ago.

Re: Modern Comparison?

The scripts were smart and nothing was dumbed down. Everything wasn't spelled out for the viewer. With exception, that's how it feels watching today's films. With IHON and other great films of this era, they're often fast-paced and keep you on your toes--intellectually and physically. If there's sappiness, it's counterbalanced by the cynicism and acerbic nature of the humor involved.

Re: Modern Comparison?

What about Space Balls, have you guys seen that, its almost a perfect match, only in Space. I'm pretty much against Romantic Comedies, but this is really different. Wasn't it the first?

Re: Modern Comparison?

That's exactly what I thought. The last twenty minutes were almost identical (in terms of story).

Re: Modern Comparison?

To me (up to now), there are no comparison to this movie (IHON). I've seen lots of movies in the same genre, but nothing gave me the same feeling that i always felt after seeing IHON. I always enjoy seeing it, many times, and never get bored by it.

Re: Modern Comparison?

I would highly recommend BEFORE SUNRISE (1995). Go ahead and get the sequel, BEFORE SUNSET (2004), which you will want to immediately watch. Trust me, you will understand!

Re: Modern Comparison?

This might not be exactly what you're looking for, but Shrek pretty much completely follows the plot of this movie.

Last Films:
The Apartment (10/10)
Inland Empire (8/10)

Re: Modern Comparison?

jesus, your right.
Shrek is extremely similar.

Never thought of it, but it's true

Re: Modern Comparison?

There isn't any modern comparison. No modern romantic comedy can stand up next to "It Happened One Night".

Re: Modern Comparison?

The first film I thought of was My Best Friend's Wedding.

Re: Modern Comparison?

I always think of Planes, Trains and Automobiles as the more modern re-telling of It Happened One Night... Not in the same league, of course, and sans the romantic element of a male and female lead, but the gist is the same and with a "buddy movie" tinge, we get the drift. No classic, but it always entertains me even if there's only so much of Candy and Martin I can take.

NOW TARZAN MAKE WAR!

Re: Modern Comparison?

What Happens In Vegas
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
10 Things I Hate About You
We're the Millers

__________
Last movie watched: Out of the Past (8/10)

Re: Modern Comparison?

OMG. Do not mention juvenile crap like What Happens in Vegas and Prince of Persia in the same board as this iconic and brilliant romantic comedy.

Re: Modern Comparison?

I wouldn't be if the OP didn't give two crappy examples with Sandra Bullock and requesting more of the same.

__________
Last movie watched: The Pawnbroker (6/10)

Re: Modern Comparison?

French Kiss with Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline is very similar .Kline helping Ryan to find her real love but having an ulterior motive.Mutual disdain turns to love after a long trip

Re: Modern Comparison?

In terms of story, many romantic comedies since have tried and failed to copy this masterpiece. Look at Runaway Bride.

BUT, in terms of great storytelling on film, they really were successful in duplicating the greatness of old classic romantic comedies in the 1980s and 1990s. Movies like When Harry Met Sally, Sleeping in Seattle, Pretty Woman, What Women Want, While You Were Sleeping and even True Lies, were all about as brilliant as movies like It Happened One Night or Bringing Up Baby. It was great to see so many great classics come out so close to each other. Now, look what we get. We get juvenile sh!t like Bridesmaids.

I agree---the 1980s and 90s were a GREAT time for romance, comedy, and romantic-comedies! SOOOOOO much better then than now.

The only mainstream romcom from the 21st century that I think is a kind of classic is Something's Gotta Give (2003)---or, at least, that's the only one that comes to mind. Other than that though, one has to look outside the mainstream to see good ones. I recommend the indie film Words and Pictures (2013), starring Juliette Binoche.

Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!

Re: Modern Comparison?

I immensely enjoy Sandra Bullock rom coms BUT they should never be mentioned in comparison to a masterpiece like It Happened One Night. They're the kind of movies I watch when I need to turn off my brain for a couple of hours.
