Goodbye, Mr. Chips : My favorite part is his visit to Austria and Greer Garson.

My favorite part is his visit to Austria and Greer Garson.

I thought the movie was going to be a fairly standard biopic of a teacher, and how he wins respect, sort of like To Sire, With Love.

But we find out his change comes from falling in love. Love does change a man.
What a great movie.

Re: My favorite part is his visit to Austria and Greer Garson.

I really wanted to see more of Greer Garson.

me too

but I had the same way when I read book, so I really wasn't all that surprised. But yes Greer Garson was excellent as Katharine....

Re: me too

It's no wonder this film made Garson a star. She was like a breath of fresh air for Mr. Chipping and for the audience.

Re: me too

I agree, a lot depends on the script, this one was superb.
But look at the difference between the excellent Mrs Miniver and the poor The Miniver Story both starring Greer. A poor script can make a actor look quite bad.

Re: My favorite part is his visit to Austria and Greer Garson.

This is my favorate part too, an extremely romantic scene. But honestly, I was a little surprised that she falls in love with Mr. Chipping so soon. I mean, for a woman climbing mountain alone and traveling foreign countries by bicycle, isn't Mr. Chipping a little too dull? If he was a famous professor, like Jack Lewis in Anthony Hopkins' Shadowlands, that would be much more convincing.

BTW: I love Mrs. Miniver too, a wonderful movie, beautiful and touching.

Re: My favorite part is his visit to Austria and Greer Garson.

The book goes into a little more depth on this. It's been a long time since I read it, but I seem to remember that Katherine & Mr. Chips collide on bicycles and he sprains his ankle. Feeling responsible for the accident, she goes to visit him at the hotel where he's laid up and is surprised to learn how much she enjoys talking to him.

Re: My favorite part is his visit to Austria and Greer Garson.

Oh, I loved Greer Garson in her part! She always lights up the screen, doesn't she?
I so wished she had more screen time in this!

Re: My favorite part is his visit to Austria and Greer Garson.

I thought the movie runs out of steam after Garson leaves the film. It becomes rather rushed and episodic and character development is sacrificed.

Re: My favorite part is his visit to Austria and Greer Garson.

I wouldn't be quite as harsh about the ending of the movie as the previous poster, but I also felt it lost a bit of steam towards the end.

I thought it was a beautiful story though. It shows how a person can change your life, and how rewarding love can be. The visit to Austria and the meeting with Greer Garson sets this all in motion, and it is told in a sincere and believable way. My favorite scene was when she kissed him before boarding the train, and then said: "Goodbye, Mr. Chips".

Re: My favorite part is his visit to Austria and Greer Garson.

I loved Greer Garson in this film. She brought out the best in Chipping. How could any man not want a woman like Katherine?

She was such a stunning beauty too!! Random Harvest also comes to mind...
