Re: Your favorite albums released in 2016?

Everything on that list is terrible compared to Dream Theater's The Astonishing.

CG gore is the worst thing that has ever happened to the horror genre.

I just called my record store, they have a copy of the I Don't Cares, they're holding it for me. Why didn't they tell me before??? I'm gonna go get it now.

I've also heard the Car Seat Headrest and Tacocat, they're cool.

Re: Your favorite albums released in 2016?

Hope you enjoy it, Dr.

To me it seemed like a brighter, more buoyant record than Westerberg has been making in his basement in the past (though of course some of those are quite strong). I played the record a good bit throughout the year.

Re: Your favorite albums released in 2016?

Yeah, it's a shame.

Re: Your favorite albums released in 2016?

Angel Olsen's My Woman is my favourite from 2016, although there is much I've not yet heard.

Also loved The Julie Ruin's Hit Reset, Laura Gibson's Empire Builder, A Tribe Called Quest's We Got It From Here, Radiohead's A Moon Shaped Pool, Matmos's Ultimate Care II, Open Mike Eagle & Paul White's Hella Personal Film Festival. And Kristin Hersh sneaked out Wyatt At the Coyote Palace, which was... good.

Quite liked PJ Harvey's Hope Six Demolition Project too (although Let England Shake was a tough act to follow). Bat For Lashes' The Bride was decent. As was David Bowie's Blackstar. And Danny Brown's Atrocity Exhibition was... interesting.

Re: Your favorite albums released in 2016?

These are all some form of traditional heavy metal. Precise sub-genres are listed below.

(In Alphabetical Order)

GRIM REAPER - Walking in the Shadows
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccvqNT-0jQQ (Sample Song)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACNTosjbtdw (Full Album)
Country of origin: United Kingdom 🇬🇧, Formed in: 1979/2006, Genre: Heavy Metal
For more information: http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Steve_Grimmett's_Grim_Reaper/3540417519

GRIM REAPER is a band that formed in 1979, broke up in 1988, and then reformed with a different lineup in 2006. Vocalist Steve Grimmett is the only original member.

"Walking in the Shadows" is the first full length release by the new lineup, and first GRIM REAPER studio album in nearly 30 years.

I like the following comment from the reviewer at Dangerdog Music Reviews who wrote:

Fundamentally, it's everything you love about classic heavy metal. And you get alot of it with 12 songs at 50 minutes and no pussy ballads. Nope, just straight up heavy metal from gate.

IRON SAVIOR - Titancraft
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKnRFAIHda0 (Sample Song)
Country of origin: Germany 🇩🇪, Formed in: 1996, Genre: Heavy/Power Metal
For more information: http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Iron_Savior/329

IRON SAVIOR is a long running band from Germany, and "Titancraft" is their tenth studio album.

I like the following comment from the reviewer at Metal-Temple.com who wrote:

All in all, the album is a phenomenal piece of work by one of the most underrated and underappreciated bands of the last twenty years. If you haven't heard of IRON SAVIOR before, do yourself a solid favour and pick up "Titancraft".

MYSTIC PROPHECY - War Brigade
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9MvJKvGxN8 (Sample Song)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsGH9-mA7x0&list=PLK1uRUhBbL4nGMsJXaD4TounL8EZg6lHc (Full Album Playlist)
Country of origin: Germany 🇩🇪, Formed in: 2000, Genre: Heavy/Power/Speed/Thrash Metal
For more information: http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Mystic_Prophecy/3123

MYSTIC PROPHECY is another long running band from Germany. I passed on their last two albums, but agree with the reviewer at Metal Underground.com who wrote:

To the total relief of your author, Mystic Prophecy has finally broke through the stagnation streak and has re-risen to the top of the German metal heap. “War Brigade” is worthy of any fan of power metal and will stick in your minds for a long time to come. With carefully produced sound, there is an extra crunch to the songs, tons more weight to the pounding riffs and the song writing as catchy as any of the band’s best to come before.

RISING STEEL - Return of the Warlord
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bufOv8iIEZY (Sample Song)
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLipUdhkSTH8jbxUetmVhg9QgXDCLcmJtm (Full Album Playlist)
Country of origin: France 🇫🇷, Formed in: 2012, Genre: Heavy Metal
For more information: http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Rising_Steel/3540393993

The first debut album on this list is "Return of the Warlord" by RISING STEEL. It was released on November 18th, 2016.

The reviewer at the Lords of Metal ezine classifies it as being "in the same direction of Vicious Rumors, Helstar, Judas Priest and Accept." He also wrote that this album...

is just like a good pizza. You know exactly what’s coming, but damn tasty nevertheless. No earth-shocking matter, but a healthy doses of catchy metal with a good sound. Played at the right time highly enjoyable.

THORNBRIDGE - What Will Prevail
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4TBkNFFfoA (Sample Song)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7WRRkgmPDg (Full Album)
Country of origin: Germany 🇩🇪, Formed in: 2008, Genre: Power Metal
For more information: http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Thornbridge/3540360678

"What Will Prevail" by THORNBRIDGE is the second debut album on this list. It was released on February 19th, 2016, but flew under my radar until late in the year.

"What Will Prevail" caught my interest because it is: 1.) from Germany, and 2.) on Massacre Records. Those two traits are usually indicators of quality, and that's certainly the case here!

This is power metal, but crunchy and guitar driven, with minimal keyboards. A sticker on the outside of the CD shrink wrap proclaims this is, "Power Metal just like in the 'good old days'!"

I like the following comment from the reviewer at Metal-Rules.com who wrote:

I reviewed almost 30 albums this month and I can say without the hesitation that WHAT WILL PREVAIL by Thornbridge was one of the very best, tied for first place in fact with another new band from the States.

VICIOUS RUMORS - Concussion Protocol
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35F9-nLdR0w (Sample Song)
Country of origin: United States 🇺🇸, Formed in: 1979, Genre: Heavy/Power Metal
For more information: http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Vicious_Rumors/678

The final album on this list is by VICIOUS RUMORS, a veteran band from California. I like the following comment from the reviewer at Metalholic.com who wrote:

Vicious Rumors have remained true to their sound across 12 studio albums and three-plus decades, delivering elite guitar shredding and high-octane, pure kick ass heavy metal. Concussion Protocol is a must have for any headbanger that enjoys in your face, neck-snapping, riff-driven metal.

That's quite a long list!

So when it comes to traditional heavy metal (i.e. heavy, power, speed, thrash), are Eternal Champion and Metallica the only two such bands on your list?

Re: Your favorite albums released in 2016?

Yeah. I don't listen to a lot of trad made after the NWOBHM movement,

There's some great stuff coming out of the NWOTHM movement (New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal). In fact there's a whole Youtube channel devoted to it: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCGbKiCJjph8Grazqmo7z4w/videos

Re: Your favorite albums released in 2016?

Any opinion on the Suede album?

Re: Your favorite albums released in 2016?

I bought a lot of albums this year but hardly any released in 2016.
Bought the Beatles live album, I've just remembered. That was nice.

The Stones and Kate Bush I'll get on payday in Jan.
And the Paul Simon.
The David Brent is the Ricky Gervais album of cheesy numbers from his movie.
Have a good new year, fellow Doc.

I bought a lot of albums this year but hardly any released in 2016. - Doctor_Blade

I know what you mean. I bought sixteen albums in 2016, but only six of them were 2016 releases. I also bought six 2015 releases during 2016, so I suspect I will continue buying 2016 releases well into 2017.
