Re: Social media and mental health, a looming crisis?

Honestly, I don’t get the point of this thread. It’s like saying… well, let’s not go to school either. Or let’s not go as much for our mental health. I mean there is a lot of bullying at school as well. Should we not go? The only reason why there is more bullying online and it’s such a big deal is because there are more people online than there would ever be in school, in a work place or any other environment. But, at the end of the day… it happens everywhere… in every environment.

People can call it whatever they want to call it. Oh, that is just Joe being brutally honest. That is just Sarah being obnoxious. That is just Tom trolling. Etc. But, eveeyone knows it’s bullying and harassment. People can spot it fairly easily in person. And they can do the same online.

I also think people focus more on bullying online because of these celebrities. If something bad happens to a regular person, it’s bad. But, if something bad happens to a celebrity, it’s horrible. It’s breaking news. It becomes an social issue. For example, a few years back… Selena Gomez was diagnosed with Lupus and now that medical condition has become mainstream because of all the social awareness that it now has. Well, same thing here. These celebrities get bullied… harassed a lot online. So many of them have taken to their platforms to create social awareness about online bullying and harassment. HOWEVER, the unfortunate thing to note is that if it wasn’t for them being a celebrity… this wouldn’t be as much of an issue. But, regardless… it’s still an issue.

As for avoiding social media, in this day and age… I don’t think you can avoid it. It’s like going to school. Granted, you don’t need a lot of these social platforms, unless you are going to work in that field. You don’t need IG, SC, Twitter. Honestly, the only ones I think most people need is FB and Youtube. But, I don’t think you need to totally do a backout where you don’t go online at all. That is just stupid to me.

On a last note, I know that bullying is personal. But, I feel like some people don’t understand the true meaning of bullying. Back in the day, like old school Youtube… there used to be a trend where a lot of people, particularly females would make videos of their experiences with bullying. So, storytime videos of bullying. And I would just sit there listening to these 30 minute videos where these girls would talk about these stories that didn’t sound all that bad to me. For example, in one story this girl said that another girl once told her that she looked like a skeleton, because she was really skinny. And it only happened that one time. Now, I understand that women who are or (look like) underweight get offensive comments just as much as women who are or (look like) overweight. But, considering it only happened that one time and considering society favors thin women more than fat women, it’s like… is that really bullying? But, then again… maybe her mental health was really affected by that one experience. For some people it only takes one experience. So, I’m not trying to be judgemental. I’m just trying to be analytical about it. I just know that I have been bullyed and harrased a lot. And I still get bulled and harassed from time to time. So, it’s not just one experience and that’s it for me.

Re: Social media and mental health, a looming crisis?

Yea, I guess because I’m younger… I’m sort of more… “used to it”. That sounds kind of weird. But, I grow up with the Internet and to get ride of it… just doesn’t sound likely. But, I do think someone who is an average person having Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, etc… that is a lot. They don’t need all that. It’s strange to me to see all these common folk having all these social media outlets. Now, if they work under that field, then I understand… why they need all these media outlets. But, if they don’t… then they don’t need all that. Hell, most common folk probably don’t even need Facebook, to be honest. Most people probably just need Youtube, and that’s it.

But, to each there own. I mean it’s their choice to want to publicize their life on social media and be expose themselves to social media. I think it’s a personal choice.

Honestly, I feel like the mental issue of that person, whatever it is would still be there with or without the Internet. It could make it worse because like I said there are more people online at any given time. So, say if a person feels insecure about their weight and a bunch of people on a messageboard starts mocking this person’s weight. And they’re all mocking this person at the same time, that insecurity will increase. It’s like that saying, if enough people say someone enough it must be true. That holds way more merit than a few people at school mocking this person about their weight simply because there is more people online. But, the words are the same. It’s the same bullsht. Just online. It’s just people online hiding behind a computer.

Re: Social media and mental health, a looming crisis?

I saw these on the latest episode of The Joe Rogan Experience.

The blue line is age 10-14. Best guess for the change is the rise of smart phones and social media. Non-fatal self-harm is flat for boys, not sure about fatal self-harm though.

I defended him on a couple of occasions too Dazed. He does have a very limited abiity to recall when people are on his side.

But, he is a twat and so you shouldn't feel bad.

If anything he likened you to I and I to you and so I feel like I got an upgrade at least!

I'm not gloating over you finally seeing him for what he is but I do take a sense of ironic pride that it takes being called my sock to finally have the hammer strike the bell.

Don't let him bother you Dazed, that's all he's ever set out to do to others.

Just sigh at the wasted efforts of trying to treat him as human and accept that some people are just rotten at the core.
