I think a lot of very dangerous substances were quite available back in those times. You could buy cocaine in the drugstore at one point in history I think it's very believable for a druggists from that time to have very dangerous chemicals and poisons about.

Blood thinners that people are on is basically rat poison.

I was always confused by that line until this last time I watched it I must admit. I thought he was reading a common magazine that people back then would get what he was saying. Nope Im just an idiot.

I make holiday cut-out cookies every year with anise oil and that is poison too if taken in larger amounts.

Many medications are actually carefully administered poisons, and he had to mix them up himself. Back then they didn't just transfer pills from the big bulk bottle to a smaller one for the customer.
