They Won't Believe Me : Great film

Great film

I saw this last weeek.I'm a big Robert Young fan and had never heard of this move and I watch a lot of TCM.I'm looking forward to seeing it again in July!

Re: Great film

It was a decent film noir. Not the best thought but it did a good job of holding my attention. Plus the ending was great!

"Fra-gee-lay. That must be Italian."
"Uh, I think that says FRAGILE, dear."

Re: Great film

I would also call this a decent noir/murder mystery, not great, but entertaining and well-made. I do think it would have benefited from a more charismatic lead actor than Robert Young. He performs well enough, but I think a Tyrone Power, John Garfield, or Robert Mitchum would really have scored in that role. Still, the story was nice and twisty, the pace decent and the actresses all good, especially Susan Hayward. Definitely worth watching!

Re: Great film

Yes, Susan, Jane and Rita are all especially lovely in this and add to the quality of the film.

Robert becomes an Everyman character, as his situation spirals out of control on various different levels.

There must be some kind of lesson about reaching the legal limit with the number of leading ladies in Everyman's life. What this doesn't teach about that, maybe television talk shows could?

I agree with you about the actresses but I think you're completely wrong when it comes to Robert Young. He was perfectly cast in the role. I can see him as the kind of guy women would be attracted to but who would fall into situations in which those women could dominate and control him. He allows it because he doesn't really have enough confidence in himself and his own abilities to go it alone.

I found myself thinking he was a chump and feeling sorry for him at the same time. In every part of the movie, especially at the end, Young is the character. I like all the other actors you mentioned but I can't see them pulling off this role. I don't doubt they could bring something different to the role but I can't really picture it working any other way. I like the movie as it is.
