Johnny Belinda : Great Movie

Great Movie

I just saw this movie on TCM and I have to say, it's a great movie. I definitely recommend it, it's a great movie when it can inspire and affect someone born 40 years after its creation. It's really a great movie, the acting, the storyline, even the sound and other design areas, go see it, it'd definitely worth it.

Re: Great Movie

This is one of my favorites. Johnny Belinda features a first-rate cast with Jane Wyman, Lew Ayres, Charles Bickford, Agnes Moorehead, Stephen McNally, and Jan Sterling. Everyone gives a terrific performance, especially Jane Wyman. Her Academy Award was well-deserved. As you say, this is a very inspirational movie that can certainly touch someone's life.

"Dry your eyes baby, it's out of character."

Re: Great Movie

I am certainly surprised to see so few entries for this movie. What a shame!!!!! It is a movie that many people really like.

Re: Great Movie

Yes, I agree. It's been a couple of years since I last saw it, but it is a great film. Really worth your time.

Re: Great Movie

I just saw this movie and loved it, beautiful cinimatography, great acting, and beautiful lighting. I was moved by the plot and performances. I did crack up when the rapist accidentaly says to belinda's father in referance to the baby, 'she's the spitting image of her father", oops. That just seemed like a poor way for the father to learn who raped his daughter.

Re: Great Movie

All I can say is Endora was a hell of an actress!

Re: Great Movie

Who is Endora? The leading actress is Jane Wyman.

Re: Great Movie

Agnes Moorehead, who played Aggie in this movie, played a character Endora on Bewitched.

Re: Great Movie

Excellent cast, and a compelling performance by Jane Wyman. Wyman deserved her award for her role.

Re: Great Movie

I love this movie. It was extremely touching: I've never seen anything quite like it.

Re: Great Movie

Yeah, great GREAT movie!! Jane Wyman is absolutely marvelous, without saying a single word! Bravo! She deserved that Oscar!

Re: Great Movie

Something VERY cute about Jane in this movie. Never noticed it before, but a great performance also. R.I.P miss Wyman.

Re: Great Movie

Indeed! this is a great picture. One of the best from the 40's without any doubt.

It's not perfect, has some flaws. I think is overly melodramatic at times. But overall it's a great movie, with wonderful acting, efficiently directed and photographed and the story is compelling. Perhaps a bit oudated but I guess that it's even part of its charm.

Re: Great Movie

I love this movie. It's definately one of the best from it's era.

Re: Great Movie

I think it is the best movie with Jane Wyman, although I also like many others :)

Re: Great Movie

Jane Wyman was so talented. She did comedies (a cute one about sharing an apartment during wartime called 'The Doughgirls'), romantic movies and excelled in dramas - This movie, 'Miracle in the Rain', 'The Yearling' and 'Too Big' just to name a few.

Plus, I love seeing Agnes Moorehead in these classic films; she did drama very well, too (not to mention her most famous role on 'Bewitched' as 'Endora').

‘Six inches is perfectly adequate; more is vulgar!' (Prime of Miss Jean Brodie Re: An open window).

Re: Great Movie

Wow! Look at how young Jane Wyman is in this film (and actually she isn't, she's 31!). Anyone else see Jessica Alba in that face/in those eyes?

Re: Great Movie

This movie speaks to me personally: We were a rather poor farm family from Minnesota, although I never thought of us as being particularly poor, being much like other families in our county. My mother insisted on seeing this movie in 1948 and at age 6 I saw it with her and other family members. I didn't understand a lot of things then, but upon seeing this movie again last evening on Turner Classic, I absolutely loved it. I shed many a glorious tear at seeing this classic as a mature adult and loved the way it ended. Forever after, we never missed seeing another Jane Wyman movie.
