The Canyons : Nicolas Cage slams critics.

Speaking at the SXSW festival in Austin, Cage lamented his own notoriety and the way it affected how his films are perceived. The actors who inspired him to learn his art, he suggested, didn't face the same indignity.

"I started acting because I wanted to be James Dean," Cage told an audience of journalists. "I saw him in Rebel Without a Cause, East of Eden. Nothing affected me no rock song, no classical music the way Dean affected in 'Eden'. It blew my mind. I was like, 'That's what I want to do.' This was before everyone had a thing called a smartphone and before the advent of the 'celebutard' just being famous for famous' sake. I'm not complaining, but it really sucks to be famous right now."

Cage said he was fed up with reviewers discussing his personal life instead of his acting work. "Now even the art of film criticism now in the LA Times, the critic who reviewed Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, incorporated how many homes I bought or sold into the review," he said.

"What the hell does Lindsay Lohan's personal life have to do with her performance in The Canyons?

It should always be about the work itself. What difference does it make if Bill Clinton had an affair how does that affect his performance as president?

He is a very good actor, but he'd have alot more credibility if he would have stuck to the low budget, well made films like "Leaving Las Vegas" and "Wild at Heart". How can anyone take seriously anything said about the pitfalls of celebrity by someone with real talent who's sold out completely to make trash like "Con Air" and "Gone in 60 Seconds"?

So question his professional choices all you want, don't bring his personal life into it. No one cares, and it has no bearing on his work.

Oh don't be such a little bitch. Con Air is a great action movie. I bet you're one of those losers who didn't like The Rock either. Bet you're a whole hell of a lot of fun at parties.

Only parties where there are lots and lots of drugs.

I personally liked Con Air tooand this isnt fair, I agree with what he said.

And honestly, how many geeat actors have made bad movie choices? Heck what is the last good movie DeNiro has done. I mean he should have quit the Meet the Fockers series really after movie 2.

I can go on and on but you get it. It isnt fair to say that because an actor has done some bad movies. I havent seen the Canyon but IM GONNA judge it based on THE MOVIE, not Lohans personal life.

No doubt about it, even the great ones make bad ones. DeNiro has had more than his share. I don't begrudge Nicholas Cage the right or even the desire to make big budget action/thriller/garbage (MY OPINION, of course). And of course I don't think that anyone's performance should be judged by their personal business. Sean Penn and Emma Thompson are disgraceful human beings, (again, my opinion), but they are first-rate actors. My only point is that, fair or not, living under a microscope is part of the deal when you become a celebrity. And Nicholas Cage has gone to great lengths to enhance his fame and fortune.

I dont like most of his movies because he is a god-awful actor. And so is Lindsay.
