Re: Modern Casting (Remake of The Fountainhead)
I like all of those except Peter and Mallory. Maybe Jared Leto for Peter and Philip Seymour Hoffman for Steven maybe (if he could slim down a bit). Good picks though.
Re: Modern Casting (Remake of The Fountainhead)
I actually think Keanu Reeves might do a good job depicting Roark, to present that detachment from the norms of society.
Re: Modern Casting (Remake of The Fountainhead)
I thought about keanu as keating, but he's a bit too exotic maybe
here's mine:
roark - brad pitt/edward norton
dominique - gwynneth paltrow
keating - jude law
toohey - a younger anthony hopkins
wynand - paul newman would be a great choice, but, welli'll go with liam neeson, now
steven mallory - p.s. hoffman
katie - mary lynn rajskub

HOWARD ROARK: Eric Stoltz (right hair color but also has that angular face and a kind of alien distance coupled with strong presence, at times) Or Ethan Hawke. Or maybe even Rupert Grint . . .

HENRY CAMERON: Billy Bob Thornton
CATHERINE HALSEY: Chlo Sevigny

I totally agree with Stoltz as Roark. Perfect style and he has got the haircolor right.

Re: Modern Casting (Remake of The Fountainhead)
I am impressed with your idea of Edward Norton and Liam Neeson for the two key parts. They might come as close to anyone in the present being able to fill the shoes of Cooper and Massey, and play the characters in the proper manner.
As one of Gwyneth Paltrow's fiercest boosters, I'm still not sure Gwyneth could do the required moments of fire. It's tough to fill the shoes of Patricia Neal. Maybe Rachel McAdams or Catherine Zeta-Jones. They could do the fire, but not sure about the other nuances. In principle Angelina Jolie can do anything you throw at her, but I just don't see Dominique in her.

Re: Modern Casting (Remake of The Fountainhead)
alas, the only truly suitable candidate for roark is john belushi, and he's not especially available. though even in his current state, he could give a more stirring performance than gary cooper. jack black tries hard, i just don't think he could pull it off. i suppose he's the next most qualified candidate.
ellsworth could be done brilliantly by jay leno. i can't think of another performer who more brilliantly encapsulates pure evil.
and dominiquewellany dinner theater actress could manage the nuances that rand wrote into the character, but i believe roseanne barr would give a performance that would go down in history as one of the greats.

Re: Modern Casting (Remake of The Fountainhead)
All way, way too old. Stick with the ages in the book, not this film.

Re: Modern Casting (Remake of The Fountainhead)
hello
I must say that your casting is right on.
I just finished the book yesterday and it just made its way onto my top ten.
I kept on fantasizing a modern-day adaptation/casting for the book including who would play who.
Roark must be elegant, well-structured, and his face must convey a million emotions without even saying a world. The latter needs to be the same for Dominique. I must say that the quarry scenes were my favorite and I would love to see that conveyed into film.
I even went on to think up movie posters. It would be something like having the actor playing Roark in a clear, serious headshot that takes up the whole poster and have the headline be: Franco is Roark, or the like. The same would go for Keating, Dominique, Toohey, etc.
It makes me itch to write a screenplay based on the book because I think it's just an amazing, mesmerizing piece of fiction, and I want to see today's stellar actors to be part of the movie. I think it'd be great.

The only one I care about is Dominique Francon. It's gotta be Catherine Zita-Jones because she seems so unattainable, you want her even more.

Re: Modern Casting (Remake of The Fountainhead)
Someone asked who Steven Mallory was
and after considering it for a bit, I'm almost positive it's the 'failed' artist/sculptor whom Roark chose to sculpt the centerpiece of his all-faith temple from 3/4 along in the book.
Remember, Steven Mallory shot at Ellsworth Toohey, though he never understood why. An awesome character who deserves his own book or film.

Re: Modern Casting (Remake of The Fountainhead)
Leave it alone. For heaven's sake, can't you think of something new to cast? Please, give it a rest and find a new novel to base a film on!!!!
Re: Modern Casting (Remake of The Fountainhead)
I present my cast list for the remake - THE MUPPET'S FOUNTAINHEAD in 3D
OK, the first two are very important and will make or break the production:
Howard Roark - Sam the Eagle
Dominique Francon - Miss Piggy
While Miss Piggy as Miss Francon is sort of a no brainer, it is a tougher call on Roark. Let me just get this out of the way - NO, it can't be Kermit. I know what some are thinking; is Sam the Eagle really capable of carrying the film in a leading role? I say he is really the only one to consider.
It does get more complex from there, but I tried to put my "What would Ayn do?" hat on. A strange fitting hat on my head I'll admit, but I've come up with:
Peter Keating - Kermit the Frog
Gail Wynand - Oscar the Grouch
Gordon L. Prescott - Statler and Waldorf
Ellsworth M. Toohey - Fozzy the Bear (I think Fozzy can really pull this off although I understand it takes some creative thinking. C'mon, let us honor Miss Rand and think outside of the box!)
Steven Mallory - Mr. Snuffleupagus
Henry Cameron - The Swedish Chef
Austen Heller - Ernie
Roger Enright - Beaker
Mike (Construction Worker Friend of Howard)- Big Bird
Alvah Scarret (Editor of the Banner)- Animal
Guy Francon - Gonzo
John Fargo - Count von Count
There are other characters to be sure and I think one could safely put any of the Fraggles in those roles. If this were the actual cast, a director might actually be able to use these fine actors to try a make sense of Rand's umunique story telling skills.

OK, now THIS has potential. LOL!!
I think it't be better if they would cast mostly unknowns.

Re: Modern Casting (Remake of The Fountainhead)
Agreed. Best line-up yet!
Re: Modern Casting (Remake of The Fountainhead)
Great one Meccano, hahaha. That would actually be a better lineup than 90% of most remakes and actors/actresses today.
Howard Roark- Damian Lewis/ Jon Hamm (sure it's because i like Mad Men so much but he could definitely fit in that 40's setting and pull off the impersonal persona).
Henry Cameron- Tom Berenger
Peter Keating- Joseph Gordon Levitt
Guy Francon- Michael Douglas
Dominique Francon- very tough. I have no idea.
Gail Wynand- Kevin Spacey
Ellsworth Toohey- Bob Balaban
Don Draper: "What do women want?" Roger Sterling :"Who cares!" - Mad Men

Well, thank God this tripe will never be remade, and Ayn Rand will pass into the cutout bin in the record store of reality.

Re: Modern Casting (Remake of The Fountainhead)
I always thought of Roark to be a lot younger looking than Gary Cooper was when he played him. I also like it when A-List stars are not used because it helps make the characters more convincing.
Howard Roark- Zach Quinto
Peter Keating- james Franco- big name but when reading the book hes who I visioned

Re: Modern Casting (Remake of The Fountainhead)
One of the previous posts gave some good choices. There are some dead on casting choicesbut others are hard.
Howard Roark - Damian Lewis/Ryan Gosling/Chris Hemsworth/ STILL VERY UNCERTAIN.
Dominique Franco - SO HARD AND VERY UNCERTAIN.
Peter Keating - Leonardo DiCaprio - I don't know why, but i kept picturing a loser like him.
Ellsworth Toohey - Bob Balaban - DEFINITELY
Gail Wynand - Jon Hamm - DEFINITELY
Henry Cameron - Anthony Hopkins.
Catherine Halsey - Amy Adams - DEFINITELY
Guy Francon - Christoph Waltz
Stephan Mallory - Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Alvah Scarret -Alan Arkin ( is he suppose to be young?)

Re: Modern Casting (Remake of The Fountainhead)
ROARK - Daniel Day-Lewis or Russel Crowe. Both have the gravitas to perform the role.
DOMINIQUE FRANCON - Scarlett Johannson or Natalie Portman
TOOHEY - very difficult to cast. A strong actor would have to play him in a very non-imposing manner and disappear into a role that represents mediocrity. I imagine John Malkovich could pull it off quite well.
KEATING - Joseph Fiennes
WYNAND - Michael Caine. He is a fan of the book and would be perfect for the role.

Guy Francon - Ted Danson
Henry Cameron - Christopher Walken
Catherine Halsey - Alison Brie
Mike Donnegan - Jack McGee
Roger Enright - Chelcie Ross
Hopton Stoddard - Robert Morse
Mrs. Keating - Julie Hagerty
Notes:
Roark and Keating should be played by younger actors someone mentioned Zachary Quinto as Roark and I thought that was perfect. He has just the right balance of wooden and strangely mesmerizing. Clint Eastwood and Johnny Depp could have pulled it off at Quinto's age, possibly even better. While I was reading, I sort of envisioned Angelina Jolie as Dominique, but that may be all wrong. Michael Douglas would make a damned good Francon, but I don't think he'd realistically be cast in such a small role. Kartheiser and Brie as Keating and Catherine would be a total Mad Men ripoff, but in my mind they ARE those characters.
Alternates:
Howard Roark - Wentworth Miller
Peter Keating - Macaulay Culkin
Dominique Francon - Zooey Deschanel
Ellsworth Toohey - William H. Macy

Re: Modern Casting (Remake of The Fountainhead)
I read the book years ago, great book, but only found out about the movie weeks ago to which I promptly bought a dvd copy off ebay. Amazingly enough the movie is quite good, though little surprise since Ayn did the screenplay. I most definitely think a remake is in order, and nothing should be changed, simply made again so todays generation has a chance to see what two/three generations ago got to: a powerful story of philosophy, art, religion, and politics.
Howard Roark: The first person that came to mind was Campbell Scott, but I realized he would be well past Roark's age, who I see as a young man, early twenties so I will say Matthew Jaeger. I think he could pull off the 'youth' while having the age to act like a young man well ahead of his years in intelligence and wisdom.
Dominique Francon: Angelina Jolie. Dominique is intelligent, hard, and statuesque and loathe as I am to say this, Jolie fits the bill perfectly. She's a little far along in years but I'm sure that can be worked on and I don't recall Dominique being characterized as being any set age in the book. (It's been a while since I read it, lol.) If anyone knows a younger version, roughly 30ish, throw her in.
Peter Keating: Paul Bettany. Has a good acting pedigree, need someone able to pull off Keatings faults and frailties, quirks. Bettany can do that.
Ellsworth M. Toohey: This character needs someone great, talking Nicholson/Joker like made-for-the-part. Unlike the movie from the 50's I always envisioned Toohey to have a very slight frame, a weakling, and to wear glasses in the coke-bottle variety, but with a viciousness waiting to come out of the closet like a psychopath. Wow, just happened across this person, and I think it could be great Rick Moranis. I know, I know, a far departure from Strange Brew and Spaceballs, but believe me, this would be nothing short of awesome.
Gail Wynand: This is probably the easiest for me Sinestro! Just kidding, except for the red skin that's who I always pictured Gail looking like. So the real answer is Jason Isaacs (told you it was easy!). With the mustache he is easily Gail Wynand, and a great actor for a great character. He's both Gail the young boy and man from Hell's Kitchen and the older, mature, but no less violent king of the city's biggest newspaper.
Steven Mallory: Wasn't in the movie, but if you plan on adding to without taking away from the movie I'd suggest Viggo Mortensen. Age notwithstanding Viggo is a prime choice to play the beleaguered artist.
Henry Cameron: Its a bit part, but Brian Cox (of Supertroopers/Troy/RED fame) would be an excellent choice to play the old, tired, irate architect that couldn't figure out the world until it was too late.
Alvah Scarret: John C. McGinley. Summing up Alvah is easy crazy, just hasn't been put in a straight jacket yet, kinda like McGinley.
Roger Enright: Nicholas Cage. I think the dude can do a splendid job, no humor, just a good serious role.
If they got on this right away (read: tomorrow) I think this could be a huge and amazingly popular hit, and something to go with the current 'Atlas Shrugged' trilogy.

Re: Modern Casting (Remake of The Fountainhead)
These are some of the people that my mind conjures up when I read the book.
Roark - Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I think Johnny Depp would do well in this role, but JG-L immediately came to mind. He's young, he's handsome but not as a model and he is capable of looking distant.
Keating - Vincent Kartheiser. Cillian Murphy is intriguing, but if Kartheiser played Keating just like he plays Pete Campbell of Mad Men, things will be fine.
Dominique - Maggie Siff. I know, I know. Two straight Mad Men actors? Sue me!
Toohey - Michael Caine. He is brilliant and sarcastic as hell. Sam Waterson would be an intriguing portrayal as well.
Guy - Bruce Greenwood. I have no idea why, but Greenwood is who I immediately thought of. There's no explanation other than that. But William H. Macy would work.
Wynand - Liam Neeson. Neeson was actually not the first person to come to mind, but that's because, for some strange reason, Elliot Spitzer did. Unless he can act, I'm going with Neeson.
Let me know your thoughts! And with this story, I would just die if Christopher Nolan directed.
Roark - Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I think Johnny Depp would do well in this role, but JG-L immediately came to mind. He's young, he's handsome but not as a model and he is capable of looking distant.
