West Side Story

Re: Can you think of a film made recently that will still be good in 60 yrs?

"TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD"...of course not made recently,
but still a recognizable classic after 48 years, and every time I watch this classic from the 1960's,
it's like I am discovering it for the first time!

"THE WELL", after 61 years, is still a very haunting and disturbing
film about racial hatred and civil unrest, somewhat based on a true story, and
sends chills up my spine even to this day if I watch it!

"CARMEN JONES"....still here 57 years later; Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte together;
the finest, prettiest, and most handsome couple to ever grace the silver screen....NEED I SAY MORE!

"DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS"...already a 21 year veteran, and my favorite Denzel Washington film.
The era/time frame (1948), was the same year I was born,
and Central Avenue the main location for this story, is where I spent my early childhood.

.......and most recently......"THE HELP"....I remember the stories from my
grandmothers, aunts, and my own mother who cleaned homes of "the others" to help put food on the table!
Their stories are timeless, and believe it or not,
.....still happening to some degree to the women who help "the others" clean up their homes in this day and age!

Re: Can you think of a film made recently that will still be good in 60 yrs?

alien comes to mind, hopefully Prometheus, blade runner, ok more recent, pulp fiction, requiem for a dream, lord of the rings, star wars, terminator, alot of the 80's/90's works tht are getting remade, i.e total recall, robocop,

Re: Can you think of a film made recently that will still be good in 60 yrs?

I forgot about Terminator and Silence of the Lambs...two films that I always watch again every time they are on TV for the umpteenth time!

Re: Can you think of a film made recently that will still be good in 60 yrs?

Pretty good list. Your last movie reminded me of "Help", with the Beatles. I think their music will still hold up, so the movie will as well.

Re: Can you think of a film made recently that will still be good in 60 yrs?

Here's my list, some of which are not that recent, but still...

How The West Was Won (classic, all-star cast, INCREDIBLE score and script)
Mary Poppins (duh!)
Shakespeare in Love (amazing story and acting)
The Wizard of Oz (I know, I know...older, but incredible nonetheless)
Images (a personal favorite, hauntingly unusual and one of Robert Altman's firsts)
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (pure adventure and FUN!)
Novacaine (unusual script and performances by Steve Martin, Laura Dern and Helna Bonham Carter)
Moment to Moment (Hitchcock-like mystery/thriller)
Gone With The Wind (classic epic!)
The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (amazing, especially for children)
A Fish Called Wanda (so hysterical! Plus one of the most beautiful moments on film: (John Cleese to Jamie Lee Curtis:) "You are....so most beautiful woman I have ever met.")
Far From Heaven (beautiful cinematography and acting, unusual script, gorgeous music)
Finding Nemo (ELLEN! What's not to love!?)
Wide Awake (touchingly beautiful, for the spiritual among us, M. Night Shyamalan's earliest work)
The Sixth Sense (amazing plot-twist ending)
(Disney's) Sleeping Beauty (my childhood favorite)

And of course...Star Wars and Harry Potter!

Re: Can you think of a film made recently that will still be good in 60 yrs?

Midnight in Paris - It strikes a primal chord about nostalgia that transcends languages. If it were made twenty or even fifty years ago, it would still be hailed as a great movie.

Inception - It strikes emotionally on every level, despite it's complexity. It might seem silly in fifty years, but people will still enjoy it like people today still enjoy Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The Artist - Like Midnight in Paris, it strikes a nostalgic chord. Nobody but film students will watch this in 50 years, but it will still be regarded as a great movie.

I'm pretty convinced that standing the test of time is a matter of having:
a) strong, original THEME as an underlying foundation, and
b) quality EXECUTION of writing, acting, music etc. as decorations on top of that

Re: Can you think of a film made recently that will still be good in 60 yrs?

I can't think of a film made in the last 10 years that was memorable 60 seconds after it ended, much less 60 years. Films today are made to appeal to the lowest common denominator in our society. They succeed.

Re: Can you think of a film made recently that will still be good in 60 yrs?

I would hope that the English Patient and the Thin Red Line remain as powerful as they were when they were released. Being attached to WW2 might help, and having greater themes of love, human nature etc. should hopefully increase their timelessness.

Raise the Red Lantern was good, being a period film and its sensitive issues should make it still relevant a long time from now.

I wonder if There Will Be Blood or the Social Network will continue to have a sort of Citizen Kane timelessness, all of them being about their lead role, the Social Network in particular being interesting for its biographical lens about a time when internet social networking was given a huge boost, and the man behind it, his inability to make friends, coupled with the irony of his creation. Its production values, script, and acting, may give it a fighting chance.

No I can't.

You contributed so much to this thread, really...don't strain yourself :-|

Re: Can you think of a film made recently that will still be good in 60 yrs?

Midnight in Paris is one of my favorite films to come out in recent years. I also think it's the kind of movie that doesn't really have an expiration date. I know that I'll be watching it 60 years from now, assuming I'll live to be 80.

Re: Can you think of a film made recently that will still be good in 60 yrs?

Black Swan, Fight Club, The King's Speech, Lord of the Rings trilogy and...I'll say City of God could stand the test of time.

Re: Can you think of a film made recently that will still be good in 60 yrs?

Marvel's The Avengers is now a timeless adventure film like Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Shawshank Redemption is a classic most will love 60 years from now.

Re: Can you think of a film made recently that will still be good in 60 yrs?

I feel like Paul Thomas Anderson will be viewed as Stanley Kubrick is today, and movies like The Master and There Will be Blood will be considered 5 stars cult classic.

Re: Can you think of a film made recently that will still be good in 60 yrs?

hmmm Paul Thomas Anderson when I think about him ultimatley Magnolia comes to my mind, and Punch Drunk Love and Boogie Nights moreso than say There Will be Blood or the Master.

Re: Can you think of a film made recently that will still be good in 60 yrs?

Special Effects movies, for the most part, will slowly become obsolete as SFX get better, so we can rule out a lot.

Movies set in the past are timeless, so I'd agree with some who said There will be blood, Apollo 13, Schindlers List, etc.

As for movies made recently, Django Unchained, Argo, Moonrise Kingdom, Zero Dark Thirty and maybe even Side Effects, I saw it yesterday, and it's great.

Re: Can you think of a film made recently that will still be good in 60 yrs?

Tarantino as a director and his body of work will be remembered...

Cloud Atlas.

Re: Can you think of a film made recently that will still be good in 60 yrs?

I did not look through all these responses, but I just saw a movie called "Amelie" directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. It's pretty good and will be even in the future.

Also see "Nights of Cabiria" by Fellini. That should still be good for a long time. Made around the time "Sunset Blvd." was.

Re: Can you think of a film made recently that will still be good in 60 yrs?

By recent, you mean at least since the 2000's begins? And only Hollywood movies? Hmm....

Memento (2000) - The twist ending will forever be shocking
Ghost World (2001) - Tale of searching for who you are is lasting
Lost in Translation (2003) - Alienation & loneliness are eternal
Million Dollar Baby (2004) - Story about fighting for your dream is forever
Munich (2005) - A true story, will be good no matter what
There Will Be Blood (2007) - Self explanatory
Wall-E (2008) - The theme will always be relevant
Up (2009) - See Wall-E
Lincoln (2012) - See Munich

I did not list anything with heavy CGI and effects whatnot cause the future generation will top the effects eventually. There must be other goods

Re: Can you think of a film made recently that will still be good in 60 yrs?

In my opinion, age adds to a film's value.

Re: Can you think of a film made recently that will still be good in 60 yrs?

Requiem for a Dream, Fight Club, No Country for Old Men. Also I think Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained will be remembered for a long time. The Dark Knight and Inception as well.

Re: Can you think of a film made recently that will still be good in 60 yrs?

I'm gonna go with The Truman Show

Short Cut, Draw Blood

JAWS

Re: Can you think of a film made recently that will still be good in 60

Simple answer, No

Re: Can you think of a film made recently that will still be good in 60

Very few. I like The Truman Show more now than in it's original run. I think the Lord of the Rings trilogy will hold up and still be appreciated by future generations. I was very impressed with all the Best Picture nominees from 2012/2013 and see all of those becoming classics, especially Lincoln.
