Bates Motel : Mentally ill or morally evil?

Mentally ill or morally evil?

As much Norman's crimes are defended as a product of mental illness, I don't always see how mental illness has to go hand in hand with the nature of evil. In some ways, Norman is conscious of what he does, even when he believed his mother did it all, and he shows no sign of guilt. His jealousy and rage at Norma and Alex shows a sign of pure malice without the help of his other personality and just how cold-blooded he is at heart when it comes to getting his way however he wants. Whenever he committed crimes, he showed no shame or guilt, only glee and smiles, especially whenever he made the bodies disappear and smiled next to the imaginary Norma, and he did the same back in Psycho when he hid Marion's body and after Arbogast interrogated him. In a way, he knows what he's done and only uses the mental illness as a shield because the reality is that he's a cold-blooded killer who cares more about himself and treats others like pests that have to wiped clean. In that sense, it makes me wonder why people who struggle with mental illness have to collide with this category of evil characters are malicious and sinister by nature when that's not typically supposed to be the case unless they're psychopaths or sociopaths. If that's the case, then Norman would be a total psycho and not just some conflicted person about reality.

For the 100000th time.he isnt evil. He has disassociative identity disorder. Now you can say his alternate personality is very violent BUT regular Norman is a good kid who wouldnt harm anyone. Look i know the Normero fans will always hate norman which is fine but you gotta be at least factual about it

Re: Mentally ill or morally evil?

Norman, outside of his evil Norma personality, is selfish and possessive of his mother. He treats her like an object that he owns and has no regard for her happiness. She only exists for his comfort and companionship. He'd rather kill her (and himself) than risk losing her to someone else, that way they can be together forever. He tries to kill her twice, succeeding the 2nd time, without regard for whether she wants to live. If that isn't evil I don't know what is.

Re: Mentally ill or morally evil?

Thats kind of twisting the events of the show. Norman was going to kill himself in Season 2 but Norma stopped him even though she knew he was mentally ill. Norma was the one who ignored that and didn't get him help. IMO Norma is way worse because she neglected her sons health nd don't care that it would harm others. Norma was also the one who didn't allow him to be with girls and would always tell him that she needs to be the most important person in his life. So you cant blame Norman for being upset with Romero and her after all the years of smothering him. Also in regards to killing her its a fact that neither could live without the other. If Norman died then Norma would follow him in death despite being with Romero.

that is very true. i did not like it when she decided that Norman can check out the mental institution to come home. she should have insisted on him staying getting medical treatment. she was selfish and in the end, put everyone's healths, including her own's health, at risk.
