.if ..instead of attempting to fight off a trainload of Germans .they got off their train after it was blocked by the rubble and backed it (unmanned) at high speed into the oncoming troop train.
.they were in mountainous terrain the wreck would have killed many of the Germans .and the wreckage would have blocked the tracks from and further pursuing train.

I had the VHS years ago and it had subtitles but I've seen it on TV numerous times since and there are none. This is from memory:
The dialogue between Oriani and the engineer is 'Where are you going?' the engineer says 'They're our enemy!' to which Oriani replies 'and the Germans are our friends?'
When the train first stops after taking it over and the Padre in German guise tastes the soup he tells the officer 'Have the first ten prisoners bring food to the guards, they mustn't leave their post'.
When the Padre is asking for his orders the clerk says 'Papers!' Knowing he looks nothing like the guy on the ID he improvises and say's 'Button that tunic! You call yourself a German officer? Your name please! The clerk gives his name and the Padre says 'Now my orders please, I'm in a hurry'. As soon as he leaves the clerk says 'Nazis, my god'. (Incidentally army or 'Heer' personnel used the traditional military salute rather than Heil Hitler)
When the Gestapo officer is curious about Ryan's watch he says 'This is an American pilots watch. Where did you get it? Buy it? Win it? Steal it?' to which the Padre replies 'I gave it to him for shooting down the American plane, now leave us to our business'. Asking Ryan to take off the watch on the train was never translated but the Padre's gesture to remove it solves that.
And the Italian kid on the bridge simply keeps shouting 'Go home German pigs'.
That's all the dialogue I remember but if you can think of another scene remind me and I'll see if I can remember.

Funnily enough I'm watching it now on Film 4 and despite having seen it many times I was just thinking that I don't recall seeing so much of the German dialogue subbed, even for example the Foley work of the train-top guards when they stop for a break (before the good guys get to work). Indeed, the scene that's just played - where Declan Mulhare berates the Germans at the railhead - includes a line of subbed dialogue when he causually yells at the private "Wipe that smile of your face!" that i swear I've not seen before
