Re: Let's Talk About…The Burning Plain! (Spoilers)
Did you notice how calm she was? That's probably the closest to what a normal conversation was like with her at that time. No audience. No cameras. No blinding lights. Just two people talking onn the phone.
Re: Let's Talk About…The Burning Plain! (Spoilers)

Re: Let's Talk About…The Burning Plain! (Spoilers)
I'm with you on just about all counts. I went in with low expectations, my main interest being how Jennifer's performance would stand up against the accomplished older actresses. She did well; terrific, in fact, with the "scare" scene you mentioned above being stellar (that could be the very scene that won her the Marcello Mastroianni Award).
I appreciated The Burning Plain much more than I expected--and "ap b68 preciate" is the word because it is a film to be appreciated rather than enjoyed. Given time for reflection, I loved the performances of Jennifer, Charlize, and Kim, but the film itself settles in at about a 6 out of 10.

Re: Let's Talk About…The Burning Plain! (Spoilers)
The performances by Bassinger, Theron and JL were all very good. The story of generational guilt was also very good. Nevertheless I rate the film at 4.5 because of the direction.
The director is supposed to be the unseen guy behind the curtain. We all know he is the one calling the shots. If he's an auteur, we even know his name. One thing a director though can never do is put himself between his actors and audience. That is precisely what Arriaga did in The Burning Plain.
Everytime I started to connect with Bassinger or Theron or JL, Arriaga jumped in with yet another time change, demanding m 2000 y admiration for his brilliant use of time. The problem is that if a director is going to do that he really does have to be brilliant and not just annoying.

Happily we moved all the valuable threads to the other site. The only thing we are losing are the trolls.
