Girl Most Likely : Amusing but still a disappointment given the talent involved.

Amusing but still a disappointment given the talent involved.

Expectations are a dangerous thing. With Wiig, Dillon and Benning on board and a high profile slot in the Festival I had hoped this might rise above mainstream mediocrity, but while it flirts with being quirkily charming, it never really finds its footing. There are some good laughs but the film lacks any real tension or conflict and never really connects on an emotional level. It's not a bad film - and I'm sure on a Friday night at the local multiplex it might be a charming evening out - but it seems pretty flabby in the Festival context. I don't want to sound like a movie snob - I love a good mainstream comedy. I think Bridesmaids was a very funny film and, while I wasn't expecting Bridesmaids 2, I was hoping for something that, on the surface, seemed glossy and Hollywood but underneath had a little more wit and guile than your average film. I thought this might have a chance to be this year's Jeff Who Lives at Home which was one of the Fest's most pleasant surprises last year. Alas, it was not.

In all fairness - the audience seemed to enjoy it quite a bit and I'm sure it will do alright - but it's ultimately very underwhelming.

Seems to be what a lot of people think. I like the cast though, so I still want to see it. My expectations just went down a little.

Have you heard anything about a possible release? All of these people keep saying December.

I'm superstitious. Before I start a new movie, I kill a hobo with a hammer-Gwyneth Paltrow

Re: Amusing but still a disappointment given the talent involved.

Haven't heard anything about a release date and couldn't stay for the Q&A so I don't know if further details were offered. It's certainly not a prestige, autumn release type film (ie - I don't think it's positioned for any awards consideration with the possible exception of Benning who gives the kind of performance that often gets attention without really deserving it) but time will tell. The cast may help give it a higher profile release but it does feel a little bit like a one of those January dumps. Time will tell.

Looks like Lionsgate has just snagged the rights so you should start hearing firmer release date discussions in the near future.

I agree with you that it never really finds its footing. I caught it in Toronto as well, and thought the same thing. Though I did enjoy it overall, it was not quite as good as I was expecting. Still, the cast is great and the movie is so good-natured it's hard to not to like it. Those who were interested in it before should still definitely check it out when it gets released!

Re: Amusing but still a disappointment given the talent involved.

I agree with the reviews. Good, but not great.

Re: Amusing but still a disappointment given the talent involved.

I saw this last night at a pre-screening and your review is pretty much dead-on. I couldn't connect with any of the characters (except Ralph to some degree and a lot of the laughs felt forced. I think in this case the problem was the script and not the performers, honestly, I even thought Darren Criss did a good job. I would actually recommend waiting for On-demand and skip the theater prices.

Re: Amusing but still a disappointment given the talent involved.

I know it's wrong to make assumptions based solely on the trailer but after seeing the trailer I feel like that's exactly the response I'm going to have.

When the project was announced right after 'Bridesmaids' made Kristen Wiig a household name (thereabouts) it was being mentioned as a dark nihilistic, very adult drama with a few bits of comedy. The trailer meanwhile pretty much sells this as a "feel-better" comedy with wacky characters, crazy hijinks, tired age jokes & a Magic Pixie Boy. I will still attempt to go into the film with as open a mind as possible but I will be rather disappointed if instead of this being a genuine emotional drama with a few laughs in the background it's just another "Get It Together Girl" comedy with lots of random forced hilarity & two or three moments of genuine drama.

There. It's on the Internet. Thus it's official

Re: Amusing but still a disappointment given the talent involved.

Yep. The trailer is the first i'd heard of it, and i sat there going "They are actually going to release this and expect to make money?"

Re: Amusing but still a disappointment given the talent involved.

count me in as another trailer-based skeptic.

Please put some dashes above your sig line so I won't think it's part of your dumb post.

Re: Amusing but still a disappointment given the talent involved.

Would you say the trailer made it look better than it really is?

Re: Amusing but still a disappointment given the talent involved.

I still want to see it.
