The Brady Bunch : Jumping the shark

Jumping the shark

Three growing girls in a room together with only one small closet and one dresser as well. In what universe? Can you think of anything else?

The easiest thing i have ever had to do was give my heart.

Re: Jumping the shark

The closet may not have been that small. They can also double up hangers by puting a shirt on the same hanger as a skirt or pair of pants.

Re: Jumping the shark

Good thinking!

Re: Jumping the shark

The beds were quite high and there may have been underbed drawers. Honestly, that room was really pretty big. I don't think 3 girls in a room is that outrageous. When I was in college I was in a triple that was smaller, and we were just fine.

Re: Jumping the shark

You're right the part that jumped the shark was the appearance of one dresser and what looked like a tiny closet.

As far as Oliver goes I don't remember how he came to be on that show.

If I remember correctly the girl's beds had no drawers under their beds.

The easiest thing i have ever had to do was give my heart.

Re: Jumping the shark

Susan, my "jumping the shark" moment with the Brady Bunch was the episode that introduced us to Cousin Oliver.

Re: Jumping the shark

In the episode where Oliver was introduced the family originally suspected that Mom was pregnanthence the new addition to the familybut the new addition was cousin Oliver. I was disappointed that Mom wasn't pregnant. I thought that would've fit better than the forced addition of Oliver but a baby would really changed the dynamic of the show, but I don't necessary think for the worse.

Re: Jumping the shark

Bringing in a baby would only have brought in pointless and annoying shots of the baby. Which would take time away from the actual stories.

Re: Jumping the shark

It would've at least brought new storylines to the show. The plots were getting quite strained in the last half of season 5 anyway. A baby would've felt more natural than forcing annoying cousin Oliver on the family.

Re: Jumping the shark

I've written about this before, but the series was sort of constrained by its large cast. In Father Knows Best the series worked remarkably well as the children aged because it started to handle more young adult issues. The problem is that such stories would have required more guest actors, leaving the rest of the cast with less to do.

Re: Jumping the shark

rewhitney, remember "married with children"? that kid "Seven"? that appeared for a few episodes then disappeared into classic TV ether. Have those new characters ever succeeded?

Re: Jumping the shark

No including the character of Oliver or else he would've been in the reunion shows.

In mine; that's how I grew up. Admittedly, we had two dressers, and neither of them was cluttered with trophies. Didn't the Brady girls have a small table next to their beds as well?

My four brothers, meanwhile, shared one room with four bunk beds. But at least
there weren't toy soldiers carved into the beds, and no sad clown paintings on the walls, either. No wonder Greg was so anxious to move out of that room.

I'm not crying, you fool, I'm laughing!

and writing songs about clowns never have had laughed before.

Re: Jumping the shark

My mom and her three sisters (total of four girls) shared a room growing up that had an even smaller closet. Granted, this was a generation earlier than the Bradys (my oldest aunt being born in the middle of the Great Depression and my momyoungest sisterbeing born after WWII.)

Re: Jumping the shark

People, "jumping the shark" means that moment in the show when it all went downhill after that.

I highly doubt having a small dresser and closet among three girls in the bedroom would cause the series to go downhill LOL.

Re: Jumping the shark

I was told that jumping the shark meant when a show went beyond what was believable. Three sisters that are not poor and wear different outfits everyday and share a bathroom and never fight is not true to life.

The easiest thing i have ever had to do was give my heart.

Re: Jumping the shark

If that is the case, and we're nitpicking what is believable, then the show jumped the shark in the pilot when Tiger and Fluffy were brought to the wedding. Nobody would do that, hence, it's unbelievable, hence the show jumped the shark and only got worse from that point on.

Ha! The show jumped the shark from the start!

I never thought of that! Hilarious!

Re: Jumping the shark

No it has nothing to do with whats believable.

It's about the moment the show started to turn bad.

Brady Bunch jumped in the final season.

Re: Jumping the shark

exactly. the shark is the 'axe'

jumping the shark means the shark is going to attack you and you jump out of the way.

the show was probably going to be axed before Oliver. Oliver was jumping the shark. [as much as I loved him]

Oh God. Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more.

Re: Jumping the shark

the shark is the 'axe'

I respectfully disagree. The Happy Days episode where Fonzie jumped the shark (hence the reference) was 'Hollywood: Part 3' and aired in 1977. The series ran for another 7 years after that!

Some shows coincidentally 'Jump the Shark' close to the end of their respective run, but not always.

I miss the original 'Jump the Shark' website where people could vote when a series stopped being good. That was always a good indication of public opinion on a series.

Re: Jumping the shark

WELL, the show was SUPPOSED TO DIE THEN but it didn't.

jumping out of the way of the shark!

Re: Jumping the shark

Agreed. Happy Days was a fun, watchable show until that episode. Then is morphed into a caricature of itself. I loved the earliest episodes when the characters looked like they stepped out of the late 1950's/ early 1960's. There was a certain charm about the show.

When the men started sporting shoulder length, feathered hair and polyester bell bottoms, one could tell that everyone involved was just mailing it in and cashing the checks.

Re: Jumping the shark

The original term refers to the Happy Days episode when Fonzie jumped a shark by waterskiing. The show got unbelievable, as you said, but also downhill from there, with new characters being added and declining the freshness of the original episodes.

Some would say Cousin Oliver jumped the shark for the Brady Bunch as did Little Ricky's annoying singing on The Partridge Family.

Re: Jumping the shark

This is from wikipedia

Popularized by radio personality Jon Hein in the 1980s, the phrase is based on a scene from a fifth-season episode of the sitcom Happy Days in which the character Fonzie jumps over a shark while on water-skis. This was deemed a ratings ploy, for it was outside of the original thrust of the sitcom.

The usage of "jump the shark" has subsequently broadened beyond television, indicating the moment when a brand, design, franchise, or creative effort's evolution declines, or when it changes notably in style into something unwelcome.

Re: Jumping the shark

This is when BB jumped the shark:

Re: Jumping the shark

I agree - when the Bradys started turning into a family singing group (a la Partridge Family), it signaled trouble. However, I think the true "jump the shark" moment was introducing Cousin Oliver.

But at least there weren't toy soldiers carved into the beds, and no sad clown paintings on the walls, either. No wonder Greg was so anxious to move out of that room.

Don't forget the little golf bag with the plastic golf clubs in it!
