The Brady Bunch : Why do people think Alice works for free?

Why do people think Alice works for free?

Yes, she lives at the house and is considered a member of the family. It's illegal to hire someone and not pay them.

Why do people think Alice works for free?
Do they? In at least one episode--the one where Alice thinks she should leave, now that there's a mom in the house--the Bradys discuss her pay. They realize that they've added four more people to the household, but haven't increased Alice's pay. So it's pretty clear just from that one incident that she DOES get paid!

Some people who watch the show think Alice doesn't get paid.

Re: Why do people think Alice works for free?

She also gets her own room, saving tons on rent, plus meals. So it doesn't cost Mike and Carol a lot to keep her around.

Compare that to the TV show "Newhart". One episode showed Stephanie the maid's paycheck, which amounted to $2,000 after taxes in today's money. And that's after she had her room and board paid for as well.

Re: Why do people think Alice works for free?

The Loudons were not wealthy people as far as I know so Stephanie's rich father must have secretly added to the salary for her to make that kind of money plus room and board.

It was all just a dream.

She doesn't sleep in the fridge. That's just in the movie.

LOL, I forgot about that!

Re: Why do people think Alice works for free?

I would certainly hope that Alice gets paid. The Bradys would be lost without her.

Re: Why do people think Alice works for free?

Wait..Alice works for free. The movie says so

Re: Why do people think Alice works for free?

The movies aren't canonical.

Re: Why do people think Alice works for free?

Alice Nelson, the only Caucasian maid in all of Lis Angeles. I think that the Beady's keep her in indentured servitude. Or maybe she was a member of the Weather Underground, and she is using the alias of Alice Nelson housemaid as a cover while she is on the run from the FBI.

Re: Why do people think Alice works for free?

I think people joked about that because Alice's wages were hardly ever discussed.

Re: Why do people think Alice works for free?

In the '80s it was in the media that Ann B. Davis had been a volunteer for the Episcopal Church. Of course, that was distorted by some fans. I knew a blabbermouth who was telling people that Alice belonged to a commune and was a "Moonie". That may have been how the Alice not getting paid by the Bradys story got started.
