The Brady Bunch : Boys' clothing and girls dresses

Boys' clothing and girls dresses

Did boys really wear flowered, pink, purple clothing back then? The clothes just seem like they come from a family closet and whatever they grabbed they wore. Greg's purple clothes, his flower printed shirts. The blue (I think) t-shirt and the flower "blouse" on the Johnny Bravo episode. Peter's flowered belt. And they talk about clothes that girls wear today.....look at those girls dresses. It always looks like they forgot to put on pants, a skirt or shorts. Just curious. Not condemning this, but just curious...if these were just part of the show or is it really what people wore back then. I just cannot picture men wearing pastel colors and flowers.....lol.

Re: Boys' clothing and girls dresses

I didn't mind this as much as the clashing and plaid pants.

Re: Boys' clothing and girls dresses

Yes. People actually dressed that way. Watch any other show set in the early 70's and you will see some pretty loud ensembles.

People will be saying the same thing about our fashion 40 years from now.

Re: Boys' clothing and girls dresses

The "unisex" look was in back then. Boys wore a lot of flowered, body-hugging shirts, gold jewelry, and tight bell-bottom pants with platform shoes. They also sported long, feathered hair. Girls and women were just beginning to wear pants in
school and in the workplace (not always allowed before then). Men's tuxedos were often paired with frilly fronts and cuffs; the tuxedos themselves came in odd colors such as powder-blue. Wide tooled leather and macrame belts were common accessories for both sexes. Collars on shirts were pointed and often so wide that they almost reached the shoulders. The leisure suits for men featured all kinds of pastel colors (my blue-collar Archie Bunker-type father had a light green one) and
flowery shirts.
Johnny Carson's "horse blanket" plaid suit was considered the height of fashion back then; Carson even pushed a line of "Johnny Carson" suits in the 1970s. The granny dresses worn by Ann-Margret and Susan St. James were in style, too.
One of my favorite fashion trends of that era were the tight-fitting knitted sweaters featuring motifs of seagulls, sunsets and rainbows--worn by both sexes, of course. The 1970s styles were far out!!

I'm not crying, you fool, I'm laughing!

Re: Boys' clothing and girls dresses

We know that the unisex look has continued with Miley Cyrus (girl looking like guy) and we still have guys with mullets, ponytails, etc.I STILL cannot tell if I am looking at a girl or a boy (and not since I was five in 1965).

Amanda Bynes is hot and Lindsay Lohan is not.

Re: Boys' clothing and girls dresses

My uncle was a big fan of Johnny Carson suits and was disappointed when they were discontinued.

Re: Boys' clothing and girls dresses

I think alot of things from the '70s are ugly. Maybe all the manufacturers were still high from the '60s. Don't know how else to explain olive green, shag carpeting, plaid bell bottoms, ugly furniture, etc.

Re: Boys' clothing and girls dresses

I was born in 1960 and I saw 2 of my own outfits on Marcia! I also had the same robe/nightgown she wore in the episode about getting the attic room

A daffy woman constantly strives to become a star.

Re: Boys' clothing and girls dresses

Wow. What two outfits of Marcia's did you own? My two favorite outfits of hers is the green dress she wore when she was thinking of joining the boosters. And the light blue dress she wore in the episode where she developed a crush on the family dentist.

Re: Boys' clothing and girls dresses

I liked Marcia's ice cream store uniform. Especially the hat.

Re: Boys' clothing and girls dresses

I grew up in the early 70s and unfortunately I also wore the same style of silly clothes, albeit not quite as flashy as the Brady kids of course. My little sister had it worse, her skirts were as short as Cindy's - much to her embarrassment. Hell, even our mom wore mini-skirts back then! How times have changed...hehe

Re: Boys' clothing and girls dresses

I had clothes like Marcia and Jan. In particular the Danskin Stretchy pants with matching horizontal striped tops.

When I watch the show now, it's very clear that many of the styles were just for children's clothing. Check out the episode when Marcia goes to her first dance. Nowadays tweens would refuse to wear such "baby" styles.

Re: Boys' clothing and girls dresses

they had one celebrity bowling show where some of the kids from the show were on and they were waring pretty much what kids to day ware, t shirts, blue jeans.but there were some nasty looking cloths too.

Re: Boys' clothing and girls dresses

I too grew up in that era (same age as Bobby and Cindy), and I remember feeling "cool" because I had a similar kind of shirt Peter and Bobby wore: a fluorescent T-shirt with a brass zipper with a little brass ring at the end. Greg had a long-sleeved knit shirt with black and white stripes. The stripes started out real wide at the top and then gradually got narrower down the length of the shirt. My mom worked at Sears at the time and I asked her if she could find something like that for me.

Bobby also had a pair of patchwork pants with alternating light blue and dark blue squares. I thought they were really cool, and I wanted a pair so bad. Yikes - what a dork I was. LOL.

Re: Boys' clothing and girls dresses

A little off topic, but your post brought back some memories of kids fashions back in the early 70s. At that time, there was a popular brand of shirt called 'Rugby', which were basically T-shirts with big horizontal stripes and the word 'Rugby' on them. I seemed to be the only kid that didn't have one and I thought they looked cool. (or 'neat-o' as I used to say)

So, I'm in J.C. Penny's with my mom and there we are, about ready to buy the shirt. I picked out the color I wanted, tried it on, and we were all set until... my mom noticed that the stripes didn't quite align where the front and back were sewn together. Then she started noticing other quality issues with the material, the printing, probably the country of manufacture, etc... To her credit, she was ensuring I got a quality shirt for the money, but as a kid I was so deflated by being soooooo close, but never getting my rugby shirt. :-(

Re: Boys' clothing and girls dresses

Haven't thought of those Rugby shirts in years. I was in high school drill (dance) team 1977-1980 and one year we all got Rugby shirts in various colors to wear with white shorts for non performance events. I'm pretty sure ours had stripes that didn't quite line up! Sorry you didn't get a Rugby shirt but thanks for bringing up a fun memory for me.

Re: Boys' clothing and girls dresses

You should ask your older relatives to see their family albums. I am not talking about records. I am talking about a large book filled with family photographs.
