The Brady Bunch : Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

What were some of the popular clothing brands featured on the BB or that were popular during its run?

I've seen the kids wear Adidas shoes and Levi's jeans. They also wore 'Hang Ten' shirts. Mike has some slick Puma trainers.

Anything else?

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

Sears "Toughskins" were the go to jeans of choice. Keds sneakers were the sneakers that we all wanted.
Later on, Levi's jeans and cords, Puma sneakers, Addidas sneakers, Converse All Stars and Dittos jeans for girls (at least in Southern California). Still a little later, OP cord shorts and Vans sneakers were a must have.

I still have my 70's Levi's jean jacket from high school and my checkerboard print Vans. They still fit!

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

I forgot to mention the shirt brands that we all HAD to have. Kennington quilted shirts were the must have shirt in the mid 1970's. You'll see Jack Tripper wearing them on "Three's Company" all the time. We also needed 'ringer' T-shirt with the images of coolest bands of the time. The top bands to have on your T-shirt (based on band logo strength) were "Yes", "Bowie", "Led Zeppelin" and "Elton John". Elton blew it after his revelation of being 'bi-sexual'. This didn't sit well with the jocks, cheerleaders and the popular kids.

Girls wore Dolphin shorts and terrycloth jumpers in pink with white piping. Can you tell I was a teenager in the mid 1970's by how well I remember the needs of the 1970's teenager?

Yes! I wore one during high school (1975-79).

OP, Hang Ten, and OshKosh B'gosh were biggies back then too. You see the kids, particularly Bobby and Cindy, wearing Hang Ten shirts from about season 3 on.
Keds and PF Flyers were big when I was a kid (Brady Bunch era).

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

Qiana shirts, worn by Mike and Greg, open to at least mid-chest level.
Did any of the Bradys wear Hush Puppies shoes?

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

I was very young during the Brady Bunch era and having trouble remembering the popular brand names. I think I wore Converse sneakers. Nike was just starting out back then. It really ticked me off the day I heard that Nike had purchased Converse. I think I owned at most five pair of shoes when I was still growing. I think I had one or two pair of sneakers, one or two pair of dress shoes and one pair of boots for bad weather.

Levi's jeans were very popular. They were so popular some wearers referred to their jeans by their brand name. There were also Lee and Wrangler jeans. Jeans seemed very popular back then. The old timers called them dungarees. I don't remember a lot of people wearing khakis. I had a couple pair of corduroys, but hated the sound they made. I also hated turtlenecks. I think Toughskins were popular for kids. I think kids have become much more sophisticated regarding clothes, footwear and brand names.

The Brady kids weren't going to wear concert tee shirts. It would have provided free advertising for a band and/or made the show look more dated in syndication. When I got older I loved concert tee-shirts. I still do. The good ones are 100% cotton and have print on both sides.

During the Brady era I did wear some licensed sports merchandise, mostly New York Giants and New York Yankees. Team apparel is huge now. I don't remember the Bradys wearing team apparel. But Bobby and Joe Namath did wear New York Jets helmets and uniforms in Bobby's dream. I am pretty sure that required permission from the NFL even back then. The NFL is very serious about their trademarks.

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

I don't remember wearing any shirts condoning advertising for bands back in the early '70s however I did have a Houston Astros cap and t-shirt and Texas Rangers and Cincinnati Reds t-shirts. We lived 125 miles east of Houston and back in the early '70s Cincinnati pretty much owned the National League with players like Pete Rose and Johnny Bench. I also had a Houston Oilers jersey. That was before the NFL owners started getting greedier than ever and forgetting about their fans and moving teams to whichever city would build them the newest biggest stadium. I remember Greg Brady having a Baltimore Colts pennant in their room and talking about Johnny Unitas in one episode too.

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

When they were young, Bobby and Cindy could have wore Geranimals. :)

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

Chess King for the older boys and Gallenkamp Shoes

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

Garanimals is the name of a line of children's clothing separates, started in 1972 by Garan Incorporated. Each item of clothing features a hang tag depicting one of several animal characters. The philosophy behind Garanimals is that by making it easy for children to choose coordinated outfits by themselves, children gain confidence.

The first time I saw a commercial for Garanimals when I was a kid I thought it was a brilliant concept. I wish there were Garanimals for adults who have trouble matching their clothes.

In February 2008 Garanimals was relaunched nationwide. The matching animal tag theme still exists only now more vibrant, modern styles and colors.

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

I don't think I knew what Vans were until I saw Sean Penn wear a pair of their checkered slip-ons in the 1982 movie "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". Were they popular on the West Coast?

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

Yes, the navy blue ones sold like hot cakes. We wore them with our navy blue pants and denim jackets, with white dress shirts.

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

I don't think the Bradys ever wore flannel shirts because they did not experience real cold weather. Flannel shirts were very popular where I grew up in the '70s. A lot of guys wore them year round. If a flannel shirt became thin and/or you cut off the sleeves it was good for the summer.

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

The Brady kids dressed conservatively. The trendiest thing I remember was Greg's suede fringe jacket.

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

In the mid-'70s, Olympia Beer, a popular regional brand from the Pacific Northwest, attempted to expand nationwide. With it came a flood of branded merchandise, including apparel. Between eighth and ninth grades I bought a thermal tank top at Target, Pepto-Bismol pink in color, with a heat-transferred Olympia logo covering the entire front. Possibly the least attractive, and certainly the most uncomfortable, item of clothing I've ever owned.

Wish I still had it.

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

Iwas born in December of 1973, so, I was still a baby when the show ended. I have enjoyed the reruns.

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

this show is not a good example of what kids/parents wore.

before we start, they had 6 kids to clothe... there were three girls in my family to clothe and STILL I could not get a pair of reeboks! we just couldn't afford them -- well, we could but money could be spent better.

so them wearing name brands -- not. especially if they were in growth spurt years.

osh kosh... I saw a lot of lacoste [polo shirts/such with alligator on the upper left chest], Sears.

and I guarantee you that someone in the family made clothes.

Reading the paper can really be depressing. Mr. Dithers fired Dagwood again.

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

I was a kid of the 70s but during those years it really wasn't important to me. My parents could not afford big name brands.

When I was 13 my dad splurged and bought me a pair of Levi's black cords. It's the first time I ever had a brand name of anything and I thought it was so cool to wear those.

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

What were the unpopular brands back then? I think Zips sneakers were considered cheesy. Haband clothes and shoes were for "old" people. That company was based in nearby Oakland, NJ and had at least one local outlet store. They advertised a lot of their sales in the Sunday papers. They were something like four pairs of pants for ten dollars, but the quality was poor. They made awful jeans that weren't 100% cotton and/or didn't have rivets.

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

If memory serves, Zips (by Stride Rite) didn't come out until the mid 1970's and were really popular with children. Parents liked them too because they were inexpensive, yet long wearing. However, by the time we hit 5th or 6th grade, Zips were no longer cool.

I believe the Brady kids wore Adidas, and I could have sworn Mike wore a pair of Puma shoes in one episode.

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

Name brand casual wear came later during the early 1980s. Keds and Chuck Taylor's were popular around the Brady era.

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

I see the kids wearing Keds.

In the early episodes I also see the girls wearing Danskin tops and pants. I guess the pants would be called leggings today. We used to wear them.

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

Definitely Angel Flight polyester three piece suits for boys and men, silk shirts, gold chain, and Famolare "Get There's" (brown leather shoes with tall thick rubber soles, with a wave shape for extreme comfort when walking).

When I was a kid almost everyone said Adidas stood for "all day I dream about sex". And backwards it stood for "sex and drugs is definitely American".

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

Funny, lol, those were the days before documentaries were popular.
Adidas was for founder Adi Dassler, the name of the shoemaker. His brother Rudolf began the Puma brand.

It's always symbolized poor self-esteem when a brand name makes you somebody.

Wonderfully said.

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

Yes and no.

If a person needs a label to prove something to others then yes. If a person enjoys a brand name, they like the items in the lines, it fits them well, they can afford them, etc. then no.

I also don't blame kids. It's sometimes peer pressure but often just about fitting in which is what kids do. Goung through stages is partly how one finds out who they are and who they want to be as adults.

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

I have a friend who grew up with very little, but is a very happy person. Her 12 year old kid is a little brat who demands and gets everything: the Ugg Boots, the Vera Bradley Backpack with matching lunchbox and OF COURSE the damned iPhone 6.

Parents today try to overcompensate by providing their kids with STUFF.

Honestly, a lot of kids have never been told the word "No."

When it comes to the Brady Bunch, the stories are all about trying to achieve personal goals and working towards those goals. Yes, there are things the kids want. For instance, when Greg wanted a car, he got a job to earn money to buy the car. You can't be proud of things that you haven't worked for.

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

There can be a balance.

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

It would be awesome if someone manufactured '70s style clothing using the name Brady.

Re: Popular clothing and Shoe brand names during the Brady Bunch era?

I remember in the early 70's, everyone wore nice shoes to school (a public school) and had a pair of sneakers in the locker for gym. Tennis shoes didn't become the norm until I was in the 5th grade.

Fast forward to 10th grade, we had an after school function (where parents volunteered to help) and my parents made me wear my dorky hush puppies. They were shocked that all of the other kids had on trainers.

Underoos were awesome back in the '70s ... from what I heard. But they didn't come out until a couple years after The Bunch was canceled. Please click on

Were any Brady kids shown in their underwear besides Bobby?
