Columbo : Funniest Columbo moments?

Funniest Columbo moments?

My personal favorites among those that come to mind are the "special recipe" chili exchange in "Swan Song" and the scene with Larry Storch in "Negative Reaction."

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

My faves are when he stumbled down a steep hill, and when he had to wait in long lines for building permits. Forgot the episode names.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

Good choices.

I think the steep hill incident might be when he was trying to get to a car in which a booby-trapped box of cigars had exploded, I think that episode was titled "Short Fuse."

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

When he was driving the driving instructor who got so frustrated w/him, he walked back in negative reaction. Another was when the police department picked him up to have him go to the gun range, he was so overdue and would not go on his own.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

The scene of Columbo walking-running-falling down the steep hill is from "The Greenhouse Jungle.

I think one of the funniest Columbo moments happens in "A Case of Immunity." It's the running gag of Columbo accidentally stepping on Hassan Salah's robe. Every time you hear the tearing sound as he walks away, the look on Hassan's face is hilarious.

Jesus is the Son of God and my Lord and savior. Pretty cool.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

Ahh. Thanks for the correction. You're right, that crime involved a car being pushed off a roadway and into a ravine.

I haven't seen "Case of Immunity" in ages, and will have to watch that one again.

"He doesn't live here, I live here, these are my shirts, this is my underwear, MY brother-in-law, MY nephew and niece."

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

"Old Fashioned Murder" - Celeste Holm fainting whenever she hears the word 'homicide'.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

I've said it before on here, any episode with Dog!

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

Speaking of Dog. There is a scene in a "Most Dangerous Match" where Columbo has dog on the vet's table and he and the vet sit down to talk and dog's snoring startles them to check on dog. The vet grabs a stethiscope (sp?) to determine that dog is snoring. Dog is really knocked out.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

Once I was watching 'Forgotten Lady' and had some diarrhea on my couch when I coughed.

I can laugh about it now.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

Dawn's Early Light, when Col. Rumford provides him with directions to Pershing Hall.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

Trying to keep up with Milo Janus while he's jogging. Columbo looked like he'd rather be anywhere but there!

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

Really so many I always laugh in The Bye-Bye Sky High I.Q. Murder Case when Columbo is in the bar and is very kind answering to the girl flirting on him, and he doesn't stop chasing the boy! :)

And like that.. he's gone. (Verbal Kint)

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

I always laugh when Columbo goes to this mission in "Negative Reaction" to go question the whino (Vito Scotti) and the interaction between Columbo and the nun (Joyce Van Patten). Columbo: "I've had this coat for seven years". Nun: "Oh you poor man". Cracks me up every time!!

That is one of my favourites, too. Especially how he then explains that he is a policeman, and she assumes he is working undercover. She praises his disguise, and he (self-consciously?) opts not to correct her.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

That little nun is so sweet and clueless, I couldn't have corrected her either.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

When he kept breaking that lady's tv every time he came in the house. The episode with the twins who killed.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

Oh also the one where he's trying to find Louis Lacy and he has to wait for the computer printout from the lady lol.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

"Now you see him" is on MeTV and it's the one where his wife got him a new coat and he keeps leaving it behind and the other detective keeps bringing it to him.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

There are so many hilarious moments throughout Columbo that it is hard to pick a favourite. One weird moment I did notice though was the fountain at the beginning of one episode. Looked so strange I had to rewind to make sure I wasn't imagining it. Fans of Columbo will know or work out which episode I mean. Is at the very start so will not take you too long. But when I think of Columbo I always remember the tennis ball (hot dog sausage) machine, the poison marmalade and those HUGE teeth on the lady shop owner near the lake house. If her brain was the same size she might have survived.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

Columbo looking at the book of erotic art in the bookstore, in "The Conspirators."

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

The one where the murder was on that sail boat And he ended up rowing that rowboat across the lake to meet his wife for lunch.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

I like the new haircut he gets in Old Fashioned Murder.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

One of my favorites is Columbo with the doughnut vs. the waitress (a very young Jamie Leigh Curtis). "Did you buy that here?!" ~ The Bye-Bye Sky High I.Q. Murder Case

Another is Columbo seeking a meeting with Mariette Hartley~while she's taking a belly dance class. ~ Try and Catch Me

I love seeing Ruth Gordon and Peter Falk competing for the camera in that same episode. She's one of the very few who could threaten to upstage him!

Actually, there are so many funny moments. I agree about the coat bit when he's mistaken for a homeless man. Columbo and Dog also give us some wonderful scenes, including when he's dangling from a branch with Dog barking at him in "Forgotten Lady".

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

If Ruth Gordon could upstage Clint Eastwood, Peter Falk had no chance!

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

Speaking of Dog in Negative Reaction, he asks the big, nationally-acclaimed photographer if he thinks Columbo's dog would like pin-up photos of another dog.

Another one, not LOL funny, but in A Deadly State of Mind, the murderer glances out a window and sees, across the parking lot, his car's tires being closely examined by the Lieutenant. Then Columbo stands up this little rain-coated figure way off in the distance and a single satisfied teensy-weensy puff of smoke comes off his cigar.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

there's an episode,c an't remember which one, where Columbo goes to a homeless shelter and a nun mistakes him for one of the homeless, offers him some soup or something.

Out of so many funny bits, that is the one that always comes to mind. yes.gif

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

I think the funniest Columbo moment comes from Suitable in Framing when he is with the landlady. And she takes out her photo album and starts talking about her family pictures, just the look on Columbo's face is too much!

"Kaplan. Mr. George Kaplan?"

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

A bird in the hand episode. When Columbo makes Delores watch the car explode on the video, then asks her if she noticed anything unusual. Then her response.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

Yeah, that scene was hilarious!

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

In Double Shock I love how Colombo keeps messing things up and the housekeeper stays after him whenever he's in the house. It starts with him putting ashes in one of the ashtrays and just escalates from there. Jeanette Nolan plays the housekeeper and in one episode she chases Colombo down the stairs while yelling at him about something else he's done. It's not my favorite episode but Nolan was absolutely wonderful in the part of the housekeeper.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

The gas station scene in Identity Crisis. Patrick McGoohan must be thinking Columbo's a buffoon - which makes it especially satisfying when that buffoon nabs him.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

In the art gallery when he thought (pretended to think) the heating grate was a work of art.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

Pretty much anytime Vera Miles shows up in "Lovely, but Lethal". Miles is hilarious here. A hoot! I really had no idea she had it in her.

Ruth Gordon is also very funny in "Try and Catch Me", but she's always good.

One bit that comes to mind that makes me laugh is in "Old fashioned Murder", where Celeste Holm's character faints upon hearing the word "homicide". Joyce Van Patten's bright response" See, I told you! She faints!

Another Joyce Van Patten scene that makes me laugh is in "Double Negative", when she plays a nun at a soup kitchen and mistakes Lt. Columbo for a bum. She shakes her head in dismay. "Oh, that coat. That poor old coat." Hilarious

I'm sure there are others. I like Susan Clark's personality transformation in "Lady in Waiting" when she shows up at the company board meeting in this most inappropriate outfit, decked out in a corduroy pantsuit, in shades of fuchsia and burgundy complete with a train conductor's cap and bill. She's not taking grief from anybody as she turns to her mother and says "in case you haven't noticed it,mother, you're getting old!" Damn! But very funny stuff!

I watched an episode the other day, the one with William Shatner playing a radio talk show host, that had Columbo walk onto the set of a soap opera to talk to a potential suspect. They were shooting a back alley scene with various bums so they assumed he was one of those extras because he blended in with his shabby coat and unkempt appearance.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

Thoroughly enjoyed Susan Clark's radical transformation from dowdy wallflower to chic clotheshorse in the Lady in Waiting episode.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

Columbo trying to get a vital piece of photographic evidence from a busybody landlady who won't stop talking about all the other pictures in her photo album in the season one episode Suitable for Framing. Mary Wickes was hilarious in that small, yet still memorable role.

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

OMG my favorite scene (can't remember the episode name) was when he took out his wonky glass eye and threw it on the ground to trip up the bungling criminal who was trying to abscond with the jools. Lol and then Columbus also accidentally stepped on his eye when he was going to retrieve it, causing him to fall flat on his back, and his cigar to fly out of his mouth and flip as neat as can be right into his empty eye socket. Then he jumped up and started running around to Benny Hill music with a smoldering cigar jutting from his face as he ran flapping his arms and screaming "HALP ME! HAAAAAAAALP ME!". Oh ho hoooooo, so funny!

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

Ya know, we get this channel which is repeating back to back to back Columbia eps. every day.
I have been recording a few here and there to watch.
I really want to see the one you describe and will start recording all of them and keep an eye out for it.

Keep watching. You'll come across it eventually.

and keep an eye out for it.

I see what you did there

Re: Funniest Columbo moments?

The murderer was an actress and Bumbelo was driving his car onto the movie studio property where they have all those sound stages.
The guard at the gate thought he was bringing in his car for a demolition derby scene and was telling him where to drive to park it with the other stunt vehicles!
LOL
