The French Connection : Why are they not remaking this?
Re: Why are they not remaking this?
lol
Re: Why are they not remaking this?
More F/X!!! More explosions!!! More chase scenes!!! More sex!!! Bigger budget!!!!
Nice try, but no.

Re: Why are they not remaking this?
It HAS been remade hundreds of times.
And no, it doesn't need a remake. Just watch the original or the hundreds of wannabe spawns that came after it.

Re: Why are they not remaking this?
It's basically been remade about a million times in other guises. Cops hunt drug dealers, one's a little reckless, chase chase, bang bang, the end. It's not financially worthwhile to remake it under its original title when you can just emulate it and keep more of the takings for yourself!
Re: Why are they not remaking this?
Why remake what is already a brilliant film ? What would be the point ?

Re: Why are they not remaking this?
exactly it would only be a waste of time. You cannot improve a brilliant movie!
Re: Why are they not remaking this?
And they'd probably make it "The Mexican Connection", to update it/make it more relevant.
lol.

Re: Why are they not remaking this?
Tell you what only if they redo the car/train chase using the same line (the West End) as Bay 50th St has been my home subway stop since 1998. So I can be there.

They need to stop remaking movies.

Re: Why are they not remaking this?
for one, this movie is based on a real drug investigation that's now almost 50 years old.it's not as relevant or familiar as when initially released.
Re: Why are they not remaking this?
I just happened to watch this movie tonight for the first time in close to 20 years I think. It doesn't need to be remade, it is brilliant. Very real, very gritty, I admired how the story did not have to be completely spelled out to the viewer at every turn, an absolutely unreal car chase, just perfect. This is a masterpiece and masterpiece's do not deserve to suffer a re-make.
Everyone gets everything he wants.
Re: Why are they not remaking this?
if contemporary audiences can't get their heads round perfectly good movies that are 20+ years old then the problem is theirs and not the film
And I looked & I beheld a pale horse & the name that sat on him was Death & Hell followed with him.

Re: Why are they not remaking this?
In a way they did remake this. In 1975 was the sequel FRENCH CONNECTION II. That movie, although not as good as the original, is a pretty good sequel and should satisfy all moviegoers who may be inquiring about a remake!!! Case closed. :o)

Re: Why are they not remaking this?
Because you don't remake classic, iconic films. You remake the good films that are not well known. If you want to remake a great crime film then remake Charley Varrick.

And then we can remake The Godfather and No Country For Old Men : )

Re: Why are they not remaking this?
wow. its impossible to remake. It wouldn't work from the start. the gritting french new wave like filming that made it so real, and exciting, would instantly be overthought, filmed like a Guy Ritchie movie, and there again we would have another horrible remake.!!! TEE HEE TEE HEE

Re: Why are they not remaking this?
I agree with someone earlier who said that this movie has been indirectly remade hundreds of time already by inferior but similar movies. The audience today would find the idea of the movie very new at all. What made this movie great was the actors involved and the incredible direction, both of which you can't remake.
Re: Why are they not remaking this?
One of the biggest stars of this film is 70's New York. You can't fake that easily.

Re: Why are they not remaking this?
Maybe not a remake because while based on actual events the film is a work of fiction. In real life the "Popeye" character was linked to the Mafia and the record haul "disappeared" from police custody. That seems the basis for a new movie.
Re: Why are they not remaking this?
Gene Hackman is still out there. Throw money at him and David Mamet and there's a sequel that at least wouldn't be worse than FC2.

Re: Why are they not remaking this?
NO, just NO. Not only does Hollywood have a serious shortage of male acting talent that could pull off what Hackman and Scheider did, but no way would they go for the deliberately gritty look and restrained action. It was a product of its time and should remain there. I can't think of a single director today who would do this film justice, maybe Christopher Nolan but I doubt he would touch a remake.
If you want to enjoy a more modern French Connection cop drama, watch The Shield and The Wire which are simply excellent shows.

Re: Why are they not remaking this?
That is hilarious! Justin Bieber IS Popeye Doyle!
Re: Why are they not remaking this?
No remake. they could NEVER recreate the real NYC of the 70s like all the "stolen" (Guerilla style) location shooting at the time could.
These days ou cant just shoot a hollywood movie with a hidden camera and use real people and locations without paying them and getting signed permission.
We've kinda lost something in that respect.
maybe have Friedken film ANOTHER of Popeyes adventures, surely a guy like had other stories that would make a good film- no?

Re: Why are they not remaking this?
The only reason to remake a film is if there is some way it could be improved, while capturing something of the original "magic". I can't see how this film (or most films for that matter) could be improved through doing a remake. I mean it won the Oscar that year!!
It's like the people that say they should remake Star Wars because the special effects could be improved. I think they are missing the point of the film itself.

Re: Why are they not remaking this?
Are you crazy? You can't remake a classic - there's nothing to improve. I hope they never ever ever get that idea.
How is this movie not up on 10 stars BTW?!

Re: Why are they not remaking this?
I think you miss when remakes make sense.
1)If a movie is good and the idea is good - it's risky but it may be worth it
2)If the movie is bad but the idea behind it is good - it's 100% up for remake and should be done
3)If a movie is good but the idea behind it isn't very original - it makes NO sense to remake it.
So guess which one of the 3 French connection falls into?

Re: Why are they not remaking this?
I'm sure some people would love to see a remake. I am not one of them. Take a near perfect movie, update the lingo, update the music, concentrate on special effects, probably make jokes in it, and in the end you would have a giant piece of crap that would do nothing but insult people's intelligence. Certain movies should never, EVER be remade, and this is one of them. Can you imagine a remake of "The Godfather"?
No, definitely do not remake this film. Remember, remakes almost never have the same impact simply because 99 times out of a hundred remakes are only remade to make money, which is NEVER a reason to make a film. Look at all of the remakes of films that were great that have been made in just the past three years. Can you name one that was any good? Had the same impact as the original?
On the other side of the argument, I have to get used to the fact that moviegoers today are a lot dumber than they were years ago. So, an extremely stupid film can do great at the box office. Does that mean it's good? No. Look at how well the remake of "A Nightmare On Elm Street" did. It was crap, but it did relatively well. That's just an example of a remake that should not have happened. I can't believe they are remaking "Robocop". It, too, will be crap. But it will make money as stupid people will go see it and love it.
Footloose is another example. Red Dawn another.
On the other hand, original movies that were just plain awful have been remade and remade well. I have no problem with that. But, a movie that was fantastic before should never be remade for the cash, because it will suck. ALWAYS and ALL WAYS.
If your nose runs and your feet smell, you were built upside down.

Re: Why are they not remaking this?
No stick with that "remakes are lame" statement and leave it at that.
Re: Why are they not remaking this?
IT WOULD BE GREAT MOVIE TO REMAKE
Re: Why are they not remaking this?
Why don't you just watch it again and pretend it's a remake?
I disagree with what you are saying, but I will fight to your death for your right to say it;-)

Re: Why are they not remaking this?
I agree if they remade it right it would be great but they wouldn't do that, they would mess it up.
