Pretty in Pink : Anyone else actually like Steff??

Anyone else actually like Steff??

When I was younger and watched this movie I hated him because he was such an *beep* and I loved Duckie because he was so cute. Blane has always been boring.

Now I'm 22 and I don't like Duckie that much anymore (very clingy and annoying and invades her space a lot, doesn't respect her as much as he claims) still love his dance scene in the record store and how sweet he is at the end but I'm glad she didn't 'end up' with him.

But now I wish she didn't 'end up' with anyone and instead had a fun fling with Steff the summer after graduation and then went off to college or whatever and lived the rest of her life.

James Spader was just so hot. LOL. I don't care about his characters money but he said himself he had liked her for 4 years and she treated him like *beep* I think he is so proud that if they had dated he would have MADE everyone else accept her in his social group (glad that didnt happen because his friends were boring as *beep* but he is only really horrible about her out of jealousy and anger that Blane is getting with a girl he has liked and been rejected by for four years!!

Re: Anyone else actually like Steff??

Steff was one of, if the not the best 80s teen d-bag. Only ones that come close are Johnny of from the Karate Kid (he was also great in Just one of the Guys as Greg), Hardy from Some Kind of Wonderful with honorable mention to Ian and Max in Weird Science.

What I found so interesting about this movie is how the school was divided by wealth. My high school had the usual cliques but money never had anything to do with which one you were a member. I was a football player/jock and our clique had some of the wealthiest kids in school and some kids on full scholarships.

He always reminded me of one of my high school friends who was loaded, spoiled rotten and yet very unhappy. Despite my friends wealth, his parents were never home and neglected him. That seems to be the case with Steff, he throws parties, smokes weed in his father's office and has sex in his parents bed. All of which one can only do if their parents are never home.

I understand Steff better now that I am older. I like his character. While I too hated him when this film came out, I do not anymore now that I understand where he is coming from. Honestly, I likely would have been friends with him in high school.

I think you are correct that if she went out with Steff he would have made everyone accept her and the rich girls would not have been as mean to her.

Re: Anyone else actually like Steff??

His hair was the best- it should have gotten its own billing!

Re: Anyone else actually like Steff??

best character in the movie, as far as Im concerned. Its easy to dismiss him as an all out douche canoe villain, but he had just enough subtle pathos to make him interesting. When the movie is over the only character I feel like I want to know more of is him. And yes he was extremely sexy and beautiful.

Re: Anyone else actually like Steff??

Love this term, 'douche canoe villain'! And I agree he's the most complex and interesting character because 30 years later people are still debating whether or not he really liked Andie. I wanted more backstory as well. What about this kid made him seem so popular but lonely? Was he more like Ducky than we know? If he was really so superficial, why chase a chick that dresses like a 40 year old librarian. After all dude wore freakin linen suits on a daily basis. I don't care how many knotches he's after I don't see him crossing the tracks for a thrift store junkie wearing mom's pearls and a straw hat unless he has some layers.

Re: Anyone else actually like Steff??

So basically you liked him because he was hot, and think the main girl should have had casual sex with him for that sole reason. Nice. Pathos my rear, he even out rightly disrespected his own parents.

Not I Said the Duck

I'm with you WhiteSpirit.

I looooove James Spader, but there's just nothing about the character of Steff to like or even feel sorry for. He's just a bad guy straight to the core.

Spader plays good guys really well (Tuff Turf, Bad Influence, White Palace, True Colors, Dream Lover, Sex Lies & Videotape, The Secretary), but he also plays bad guys really well (Pretty in Pink, Rachel Papers, Two Days in the Valley).

He's just an incredible actor with a huge range.

But I do get a kick out of the people who are always trying to defend Steff on this board. Sadly, there just isn't a whole lot there to defend.

How did he disrespect his own parents? I don't even remember seeing his parents in the film.

Re: Anyone else actually like Steff??

No I liked him because he was a complicated, interesting character.and OMG how horrible for a teen to disrespect his parents..that NEVER happens irl..lawd.

Re: Anyone else actually like Steff??

I felt bad for Stef because I think he actually was in love with Andie and I think he tried to tell her for years (he said he'd been trying to go out with her all through high school and said he was talking about more than just sex) and she was a total biotch to him. So that explained his attitude toward her and his meddling with Blane's relationship with her. Maybe if Andie woulda given hm a chance he'd have changed and not been such an A-hole.

Re: Anyone else actually like Steff??

He wanted her because he couldn't have her. His rich, spoiled ass cannot conceive of something he cannot have. She was smart and above all the petty clique *beep* which he was waist deep in. If he would have dated and/or had sex with her, he would have toss her aside after. She never gave him that chance.

Re: Anyone else actually like Steff??

I think you're judging Duckie, a 16 y/o boy with an awful, aching crush on a girl he's always near but can never touch, by adult standards. Not to mention the film is 30 years old.

Re: Anyone else actually like Steff??

And no, Steff was a scumbag, don't kid yourself.

Re: Anyone else actually like Steff??

+1. There's just no getting around that. He makes my skin crawl.

Re: Anyone else actually like Steff??

You may be correct about Duckie and Blaine, but Steff is big d-bag. He, along with those chicks in Andie's gym class, live only to make some people's lives miserable. They are part of the reason schools get shot up today

However, if you are talking about his character as it relates to the skill of the actor, then I agree it is interesting. James Spader plays the smarmy scumbag(Pretty In Pink, Less Than Zero) just as well as he plays the over ambitious suck up(Wolf, Mannequin) or the good guy in extreme situations(Tuff Turf, Bad Influence, Stargate.

He's very talented, and an '80's movie staple

Re: Anyone else actually like Steff??

Steff's an a-hole, but I'd hate f#!k him from Sunday to Saturday.

I must warn you. I'm very susceptible to flattery.

Re: Anyone else actually like Steff??

I'll 2nd that, but no sloppy seconds here.

Re: Anyone else actually like Steff??

I know this girl who blew him and she said he was not much.

Re: Anyone else actually like Steff??

Na; Steff may have had his reasons, but he was still a jerk. He may have been ignored by his parents, he may have hated being rejected by Andi, but that doesn't mean everyone like that is automatically evil.
