"Young Frankenstein" did it before in 1974. Not sure if it was first. Maybe "Blazing Saddles."

Come to think of it, after I thought more about it, Laurel and Hardy, the Marx Bros and George Burns all broke the fourth wall decades before Ferris did.

The 1902 silent Classic The Great Train Robbery breaks the forth wall by having a robber shoot his pistol into the camera. x

Watch some of the Bing Crosby/Bob Hope Road movies from the 1940's, and '50's. They constantly break the 4th wall.

Ginger Rogers broke the 4th wall, in her movie Forever Female (1953), when she is talking about the 29 year olds in the Audience. She looks at the Camera... TWICE.

I always thought the breaking of the 4th wall was done by Oliver Hardy way back when. No-one has ever done it better.

Gidget (Sally Field) and more befitting this movie, Dobie Gillis looked in the camera and narrated their lives…

but the MOVIE that really inspired John Hughes was the man himself who inspired John Hughes, and that's Woody Allen, Annie Hall… he even used one of Woody's jokes in Mr Mom… the tampon on sale…

Annie Hall was the groundbreaker of almost all 80's and 90's comedies…
