Metallica: Cliff 'Em All! : No old school Metallica fans on IMDB?

No old school Metallica fans on IMDB?

Im sure there isjust surprised that this is the first
post for this video.

Even though theres a lot of cruddy, distorted shots on
this video, it still brings a nostalgic tear to my eyes.
It's almost refreshing to see the band with the long
hair again.
:O)
I feel like i have to revisit this tape every now and then,
as long as my VCR holds out.

Has this been put onto DVD?

Re: No old school Metallica fans on IMDB?

What scares the hell out of me is that there are actually people out there that think this is a "new" release.

I actually heard the words "I got the new Metallica DVD" can you believe it!?

For those of us who know better, this is old news, but it is great to have it on DVD. I wish there were some extra's though or perhaps a commenty. My old VHS copy has seen better days :)

Old school metallica rules man!

Re: No old school Metallica fans on IMDB?

Cliff on the bass what Jimi was to guitar. Those extra long fingers playing like crazy. So when he gave you the finger, he really gave it. For whom the bell
tolls is classic example. To bad his influence is not with Metallica now. I think Metallica would have been in better position today if he was still alive.

Re: No old school Metallica fans on IMDB?

I was never a huge Cliff fan, but those days the music was incredible. Due, mostly, to Kirk Hammett's searing riffs and solos that he rarely if ever plays anymore. Cliff is the one who died back then, but Kirk's guitar greatness is dead now as well. RIP to both . . .

Re: No old school Metallica fans on IMDB?

Yes I love the old Metallica. And yes I think Load/Reload/St. Anger suck big time. However, a big respect to Metallica for making the greatest music ever during the '80s en early '90s.

Re: No old school Metallica fans on IMDB?

Imagine metallica without cliff's contribution, they almost sum up to nothing.

Re: No old school Metallica fans on IMDB?

Glad to see there are Old School fans!
:O)

But yeahwithout Clifftotally different band.

I use to wonder what they would have been like if Dave Mustane
stayed on board.

Re: No old school Metallica fans on IMDB?

Ya I heard that story about the drawing of the cards, too.

1) I don't think Cliff could stop them from making music videos.
2) What's the problem with videos? It lets more people hear their awesome music.
3) The black album was great!!! Their music didn't start to go down until Load. St. Anger was complete trash.

Re: No old school Metallica fans on IMDB?

I bought this DVD recently. Kicks ass.

Re: No old school Metallica fans on IMDB?

I love Cliff 'Em All, it's too bad that it's the only video on which you can see Metallica at their prime (in my opinion), and that it's (almost) all such bad quality footage.
Of course, Live ****, Binge & Purge is a great too, but it lacks Cliff Burton, and Cliff 'Em All is more interesting it's just more energetic imo.
James' headbanging during pretty much all the songs on Cliff 'Em All kicks ass, it's a pity he stopped doing that later on. (not as much headbanging on Live **** as there is on Cliff 'Em All)
My favorite songs/scenes on CEA are Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Fade To Black, Seek and Destroy, and For Whom The Bell Tolls.
Metallica should make a new DVD with better live 80's footage (kind of like what Iron Maiden did with The Early Days), it'd sell like hotcakes.

Right here…

*beep* yes The Four Horsemen..
I'm a huge Metallica fan. At least,a fan of what they used to represent in the 80's.
In fact, I think I'll go listen to Kill 'Em All right now.
Pity all their virtuosity and talent went down the drain.

Re: Right here…

Im not a big metal fan, but I do like Metallica, especially S&M, Load and Reload, and ofcourse The Black Album. Cliff is a great bass player though, nice played on the song From Whom The Bell Tolls.

Here's the skinny (according to me)

Let me start by saying that I've been into them since I was a LITTLE guy. My friends and I studied them, thought of them as heroes, even acted like them and in essence, tried to be just like them. When we were 18, we hadn't seen Metallica since they came here (Salt Lake City, UT) in '92 for the black album. Then, we hear that they're coming out with a new album?!? So, in '96, we hear "Until It Sleeps" on the radio for the first time. We were shocked. Then, Load came out, and the first thing we saw was the pics on the back of the CD. Suits and short hair?!? That's not very metal. But, we still listened to the CD. That's where we drew the line. Our heroes kicked us in our balls. We all had long hair, wore biker jackets, and band shirts, all because of them. Over the years, we got over that, and eventually grew up some, and even had the new stuff grow on us, but we came to one conclusion. There is no Metallica anymore. The black album wasOK. They have been selfish, wannabe, "we're rich, so why try?" self-absorbed douche bags since then. I can appreciate Load, Reload, and St. Anger for what they are: good music. -BUT- they are NOT Metallica. That age has passed. I remember seeing them when I was 5 years old. My brother took me to see them at some rathole club, and (even though I didn't know what was going on), I LOVED it. I remember the day Cliff Burton died. I was 8, and I cried. That man is the reason I've been playing bass ever since I could pick one up. That man is the reason Metallica was Metallica. I LOVED Justice and the black album, but Justice was what was left over from the Cliff era, and the black album was Jason. If you look HELLA, HELLA hard, you can find a copy of "Damaged Justice," which for all rights and intentions is Justice as we all know and love it, save a couple of differences. All the tracks are raw as hell demos, and there's no version of "To Live Is To Die" on it, and that's because Cliff Burton is playing bass on the songs. It's no easy find, lemme tell ya, but after hearing it, one can truly see the void that he left that will never be filled. They got pissed at Jason because he wanted to express his music that James and Lars deemed "unfit" for Metallica, so he left. They wanted a robot to play what they told him to, so they got Trujillo. Good on 'em. Now they're just a bunch of guys that, while talented and still capable of making good music, will never measure up to the days when they were true, honest to god metal. Those pioneering days, when they redefined what heavy music was. And let me just close by saying that I understand both sides of the coin. Metallica's is that as musicians (more specifically, artists), one must continue to grow and explore new terrains in order to become a better artist. A good analogy would be to imagine your favorite food in the whole world. You just can't resist it, right? Now imagine eating that food and that food alone for every meal, for the rest of your life. You'd get sick of that food at some point, possibly even develop a resentment for it. Metallica didn't get hateful of real metal, they just wanted to try other types of food. On the other side of the coin, what about us, the fans? We got to liking, loving, even idolizing these guys because of what they showed us was possible from them. Then they just turn around and say "Sorry, we don't do that anymore." That really let us down. It's hurtful, and knowing that they had the whole mainstream to work with, they had plenty of commercial success to get them by. They no longer needed the praisings of their peers, because they weren't into that scene anymore. So they turned their backs on us. But that doesn't mean it was meant as a hurtful move. They just outgrew the scene, the same way one outgrows partying 24/7, or chilling with the "in-crowd." They just got older. No harm, no foul. All in all, they taught us some very important lessons. We diversified from the "if it ain't metal, it ain't cool" attitude and opened up our minds to new things. We found that we didn't have to have a certain image, only what we as people felt we wanted to look like. We learned that it's possible for anyone to let you down, even your heroes. Not that they will, just that it's possible. I'm not defending them or bashing them by any means, just stating my view on the whole thing. But I'm a better person for having experienced that kind of let-down, and gleaning the knowledge that everyone has to grow up sometime, as well as the fact that an image can be a prison of sorts. So, in closing, I continue to enjoy Metallica's music, but I no longer view them as the heroes I worshipped in days of yore. Now, I look inward for someone to look up to, and now, they're just another band that I can say I like, and nothing more.

Re: Here's the skinny (according to me)

Is this DVD worth buying without even seeing a preview?

I'm a hardcore old-school Metallica fan, though not as hardcore as I'm sure some people out there are. I like listening to their first three albums. "Justice" was a very decent album but didn't quite live up to the expectations of Metallica. That's just my opinion. But it did have several excellent songs. The "Black" album was pretty much garbage. I guess if you're more into hard rock than metal you would like it but it wasn't thrash and Metallica sold out to become a bunch of hard rock p*ssies instead of headbanging thrashers.

You can't really compare music to eating food because they're too different. I like to eat something different everyday but I often listen to the same album over and over everday without change.

Well, Metallica has been dead for almost a decade now. Oh well. Time to move on.

But lemme know if this DVD is something I should buy instantly without checking out any previews or anything like that. Wait, I did see some of the performances on YouTube and they were awesome.

Re: Here's the skinny (according to me)

-"I can appreciate Load, Reload, and St. Anger for what they are: good music."

*beep* Load, Reload and espescially: St. Anger: GOOD MUSIC????????????? Well i haven't actually heard everything on load/reload so i guess the following applies mostly to st. anger. OK man, i'm a musician, my family is comprised of musicians, and as a musician, i can absolutely not condone st. anger, and i feel betrayed knowing that you are a feloow metallica fan.

anyhoo, OLD SCHOOL METALLICA: RAW *beep* POWER!!!! I will be a die-hard metallifan til the rest of my days except for that fact that (i don't care what anyone says: cuz imo, its true) they harsh sold-out. and i know that i'm not the ONLY one here that feels betrayed by the in at least the most remote way. It sucks how Cliff, being such THE virtuoso of bass guitar had his life tragically cut short- but we'll bever forget hime will we? Funny, Jimi Hendrix's life was cut short as well.

Re: No old school Metallica fans on IMDB?

I hear ya man. i *beep* hate the new *beep* music we have these days like rap and pop. I HATE IT! and yes theres been a dvd out. but i own a vhs of it>:D Just god hope that kirk doesnt quit the band because hes the only one that has guts to grow "longer" hair than lars and james. but rob has *beep* long hair and if he cuts it off ill piss on him. lol jk but metallica lives on *beep*

Re: No old school Metallica fans on IMDB?

I just watched this doc tonight. Lots of good times, especially hearing Whiplash (my favorite off of Kill em All), Sanitarium, and all those bass solos, even the cheapest quality camcorders and audio can't dilute their impact from back then, it's like the Beatles on Ed Sullivan for their fans.

Re: No old school Metallica fans on IMDB?

I gotta admit that I came into Metallica late. In fact, they got my attention because they covered a couple songs by my favorite band, Budgie (Breadfan and Crash Course in Brain Surgery). Hell, I didn't think very many people heard of Budgie, and here's this kick-ass band covering two of their tunes! Of course, I started to listen to Metallica, and I've been hooked since! They lost me during their "Load" period, but oh well

Re: No old school Metallica fans on IMDB?

Guys. Liking only "Old School" Metallica no longer makes you seem important, unique, or interesting.

They've changed a lot, but Load and Reload are both perfectly respectable albums, and I listen to them just as much as any other. Load and Ride the Lightning have sold the same number of albums, along with S&M and Garage Inc. I mean, I LOVE Ride the Lightning. Who doesn't?

St. AngerI won't mention.

"You know who this isExeryone say Hi Cliff"James Hetfield '85 intro to For whom the bell tolls Oakland I happened to be there
I would have to agree that load and reload are respectable albums but the first 5 are the best yes the black album was a great album. It all went downhill when they started touring with bands like limp bizkit and linkin parkthen they started to sound like Nickleback.I was lucky enough to see Cliff on 3 different occassions in concert he will forever be a GOD in my musical book.R.I.P.Cliff Lee Burton..But also on that same note if cliff would still be alive we wouldnt have had and Justice for all and one of the greatest Metallica songs ever written "One".So you all say that if cliff was still alive Metallica wouldnt be mainstream or all egotistical. We wouldnt have had some of the music that we all enjoy today i just wish all the old school fans would show the kids who listen to St.Anger what Metallica used to be and stand for. There was a point where i had to show my son who metallica used to be and how great they were.

Re: No old school Metallica fans on IMDB?

i may have been born in the '90's but i am a major old school fan! METALLICA is my number one band (the old band anyway)i have pics and posterd of Cliff and the band everywhere in my room.i have since began a compilation of pics and articles and short bios of different metal heroes of mine that have passedGone But Never ForgottenLegends Never Die!!

WE ALL MISS YOU CLIFF!!!

*OBEY YOUR MASTER!*

Re: No old school Metallica fans on IMDB?

I was a hard core fan for years.loved Kill-Ride-Master-Justice, thought the Black Album was OK, hated Load/Reload.and have mixed feelings about St. Anger.

They were at their best with Cliff, no doubts there. The raw energy, the lack of corporate influence, the "screw you" attitude were all firmly there.

Now they still say "screw you" but they mostly say it to their fans with $150 concert tickets and piss poor albums.

Cliff no doubt has mixed feelings on the current state of the band.

But without a doubt, they are to be heralded for those first 4 records. The absolute gold standard for Thrash Metal then and now.

RIP Cliff.we miss you.
