Blu-ray Disc Releases : After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

Hey all,

I'm new to Blu. I've had a HDTV for like 3 years now, but only just bought a Blu-Ray player last Saturday. The reason I put it off for so long is because I've been happy with DVD (still am) and I have a rather extensive collection (around 1,000 DVDs).

Anyway, since crossing over to Blu-Ray, I admit that the picture quality is SPECTACULAR.

In the past week, I've bought one Blu-Ray disc that I didn't already own: "Inception". I have bought several more, all films that I already own on DVD. But the reason I have re-bought them is because the DVD versions have really bad transfers. Like "The Road Warrior" (a single layered disc from 1999), "Gremlins" (same deal), "Beetlejuice" (again, same deal), "Kick-Ass" (while a new movie, the DVD looks shocking)...and I did rebuy "Avatar", but it's the extended version, so it doesn't really count LOL.

I have no plans to rebuy my ENTIRE library because 95% of the DVDs still looks amazing upscaled. I plan only to rebuy films I come across with crappy transfers.

Just wondering what you guys have done or are doing? Have you replaced your entire DVD library with Blu-Ray? Hocked the whole thing completely and are starting over, or simply replacing certain films like I am?

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

It's going to be a tall order for me, but maybe not as difficult as some other collectors as I was rather picky with the DVDs I bought, so most of the titles in my collection are ones that I would appreciate having on Blu-ray once they come out. I'd imagine the situation is different for those people who blind-buy or scoop up practically every DVD release they find.

But I'm in no major hurry--a great deal of them aren't out on Blu-ray yet (the majority of them are foreign films), and with some titles I can wait until they get down to bargain prices. So there's no real plan or major concerted effort to unload the DVDs and buy Blu-rays. If there's something that catches my eye, and if there's money to throw around (granted, a situation that isn't as frequent nowadays), *maybe* I'll upgrade that particular title.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

Well, I have about 4650 DVD's, so I won't be replacing all of them. But I will double dipp my all time favorite movies or movies I can watch mutiple times in a row. I started buying Blu-rays like 8 months ago and I now own 152 of them.

I just didn't want to be a loser anymore.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

As an aside, I trust you got the Battle Royale Blu-ray from Arrow Films UK? Or are you waiting for Anchor Bay's US release? :)

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

Just to represent another circumstance, I have very few DVDs, and have no plans to replace my "collection" en masse whenever a new format comes out. Most of the movies that I deem worthy of keeping somewhat permanently were recorded off-the-air from sources like TCM. Over the years I've replaced SD versions with HD versions of the same film. I rarely watch any of them, and wouldn't dream of spending a substantial amount of money to build up a substantial personal collection when there are only so many hours in a day, and when I can easily rent, borrow, or as a last resort buy a newer version if I really have some compelling reason to do so. Most of the time I don't.

Personally I get no thrill from possessing (and having to find a place to keep) piles and piles of optical discs and assorted paraphernalia, so the idea of buying yet another disc (and player) format when I can let Amazon's Elastic Cloud 2 do most of the care and storage for me is somewhat less attractive in this century. I'll be happy to see the end of mechanical storage, and until then I'd rather keep a couple RU of NAS than a couple of closets full of fiddly plastic discs.

After going through dozens of various storage systems for audio and video, I'm all about consolidating into a common medium (the network), and reducing my "collection" of obsolete, or soon to be obsolete physical storage apparatus. I'm also moving away from file cabinets full of papers for record-keeping...

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

To MikeJonas: I didn't even know Battle royale was out on Blu-ray? But I will just wait for it to find his way into our shops since I don't live in the UK or the US, but in Belgium. But I guess I will be waiting for a long time then. But maybe there's a chance since the DVD version sells pretty good over here. But then again, I had to buy the Director's cut from Ebay as well.

EDIT: I did buy the UK release once I found it was a three disc limited edition !

I just didn't want to be a loser anymore.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

@ck100

That's a good set of rules that you follow. I have the same thing in my mind. However, there are some first generation DVD releases from like 1997/8 that still look amazing. My DVD of "As Good As It Gets" looks freaking amazing. Better than most new films LOL. And the release is like 13 years old.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

I'm replacing the real gems and my all time favorites. The other stuff I could care less about will do just fine on DVD.

In my case, the upgrade is already done. All of my absolute favorites have been upgraded. Almost, anyway. One remains. Now if there only was a R2/region free BD of "The Running Man" available...

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

i buy all my favourite films on blu-ray despite having them on dvd. even if the quality is only a bit better. i also buy blu-rays if ive read good reveiws on the quality and its worth buying. i have lots of dvds that i have no intention on upgrading, and as you can play dvds on blu-ray players its ok.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

No way, selected titles only, after researching IF the upgrade is worth it.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

No but,
I've stop buying DVDs, in the hope that the films I want to watch and don't own will come to Blu-Ray.
And I did fell for the consumer's trap to rebuy blu-ray version of movies I already own. My excuse: The difference is so obvious in the image quality (for some). Also for Blu-rays being better resistant to scratches.

I did sell Band of brother for $50 and bought the blu-ray for $65 (great bargain). But it will be hard to do the same with all my DVDs.

If they were pan and scan, it is an almost automatic: yes. ( But the worst thing is: I may have a pan and scan DVD, and a special edition DVD which corrected the pan and scan problem and the Blu-ray...Normally those movies I really like and tend to watch them often.)

I have to be aware of the special edition blu-ray... I'm seeing James Bond's; Casino Royale every time I go shopping and it is calling me: Buy me! Buy meeee!. I've resisted so far. Is there a group I can join?

My hesitation are mostly on the old movies... being republished in Blu-Ray...
Or new releases guesses, like: Morning Glory or How do you know loves the actors, or director, in it... But the movie's reviews aren't so good. So should I pay $5 more for the blu-ray for a movie that I'll watch only once. Torrent have been my friend in some cases.

But so far I haven't regreted any blu-rays (I need to watch some recently purchased, but I feel pretty confident) There is though, I must confess, questionable choices I made, like :
Entrapment (Catherine Zeta-Jones and a cheap price motivated the first time buy, I didn't have it in DVD)

The latest surprise was Chuck 3rd season I waited to have the price come down, and it did. And bought it in Blu-ray, and the difference is huge. I watched the 2nd season to bring back the story. And saw the difference... which was obvious.

Thanks

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

I have a lot of DVDs and it would be too much money. Plus its not like Blu-ray can't play DVDs. Even if it couldn't wouldn't matter I still have my VCR hooked up.

If its a movie I really like I'll buy the BD also if its a brand new transfer I'll upgrade. The only other time I'll buy the BD is if its a cheap price.

I have no desire to rebuy my DVD collection since the movies look fine upscaled.

Let's do it to them before they do it to us.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

No rush, but as I see any on sale very cheap (under $10) I tend to pick them up, unless I don't think I'm really into the films any more.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

@ Mikekulhman

About "Mad Max 2", I do agree with you on that one part when the brightness was cranked all the way up. Other than that, the Blu Ray is a lot better than the DVD IMO.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

No. I don't have that kind of money. In fact I will only replace a few. So far I've replaced the Harry Potter films for the Ultimate Edition Blu Rays but that's it. I'm thinking of getting Scream and Scream 2 on blu ray because the dvds kinda suck.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

I am (around 200+ DVDs in addition to the 300+ blurays I already have), and I've been referred to as crazy... that's cool with me though

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

yes. Most of my dvds are TV shows that are not on Blu-ray

So, I have like only 15-20 titles left that need blu-ray replacing

so Of course

I won't replace them all at once but eventually

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

No, only my favorites. Not everything looks good on blu-ray, not the big leap in quality that one would expect.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

My DVD collection isn't as big as others here (around 300) but it's still not necessary to own some films on Blu-Ray. Particularly comedies, since a lot of them are not exactly marvels of cinematography and direction. I can live with watching Knocked Up and Tommy Boy as upscaled DVDs. But Blade Runner and 2001, which are visual masterpieces, deserve to be upgraded to the highest quality available.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

Hell no, I'm not made of money. The only Blu-rays I've bought are either favourite movies or movies I never had on DVD.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

Nope, only a select few. The only movies that I rebought for blu ray are: The Dark Knight, The Scream Trilogy, Harry Potter COS-HBP (ultimate editions, not just to have them on blu ray), and..I believe that's it.

Wow, just realized I already replied to this thread months ago..

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

I sold all of my DVDs and started from scratch. I find it very refreshing and fun.

It was about eleven o'clock in the morning.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

As I did with DVD and Video, I am now buying all my films on Blu Ray. My collection isn't too bad but there are many more to get.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

Right now, the only thing I have that plays Blu-Ray discs is my PlayStation 3 so I'm still buying normal DVD's, for the most part. When I finally do adopt Blu, I'll likely only buy the Blu version movies I don't yet have.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

I'm replacing some DVDs for Blu. But unlike Nino Frank I doing it a few at a time. But I should be selling them all right now, I would have a better price.

What I'm ending doing when I buy a blu-ray to replace a DVD is that I'm ending giving the old DVDs to my friends. Who think I'm crazy because I did the same thing a few years ago with my videos VHS.

I'm lucky that I have friends that likes movies as well.

Cheers!

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

Yeah, sometimes I do buy 'em when the price is right. I bought "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" on Blu at Wal-Mart tonight for $10. I also bought "Young Frankenstein" for $8 there several months back.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

Nope. There really is no need to. Sure I'll buy certain movies again on Blu-Ray that I currently own on DVD. Mostly my favorite movies or blockbuster type films. Also only certain genres, especially action, adventure and science-fiction films.

Or to replace a really old bare-bones dvd or ones that came in snappers.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

No, it's just a couple of select titles. For the most part, I buy movies on BD that I don't already have on DVD.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

I'm mostly replacing laserdiscs with Blu-ray. Until I got a progressive scan TV, there wasn't much of an improvement in picture quality going to DVD, and the sound was less involving.

Before I get rid of the laserdiscs, though, I'm going to capture the PCM soundtracks from some of them. I don't entirely trust how they came up with 5.1 mixes for movies that were originally released in mono or stereo. And, sometimes the DVD and Blu-ray releases have music replaced. I'll hang onto a bunch of the laserdiscs, if only because the covers are big and worthy of framing.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

I'm hoping to totally convert my collection to Blu-ray (apart from TV) but I've only recently invested in a Blu-ray player so my collection is only small. At the moment I have 15 Blu-rays and around 300 DVD's. It will be refreshing to restart my collection as many of my DVD's were impulse buys that I hardly ever watch, but I must say that I am having reservations, Blu-ray is still a relatively new format and still can't be considered as the successor to DVD, I don't want to trade in my DVD collection to find that the Blu-ray format has fallen flat on its face.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

I'm similar to you OP -- had an HD TV for a few years, but only just bought a Blu-ray player and I'm excited.

Even though my DVD collection is actually pretty small compared to most, no, I don't think I'll replace all of them. I'm going to replace only the movies which have spectacular visuals, in which the cinematography is part of the greatness of the film and an important part of the pleasure of it.

For example, comedy material, such as Big, or Monty Python's Life of Brian can stay DVD for me, as I'm watching it for the laughs and not to be wowed by the resolution. But something like The English Patient, Brokeback Mountain, Moon, and the Joe Wright 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice which has stunning scenery beautifully shot -- I'd look into what those are like on Blu-ray.

So yeah, selective replacement of visually wowing titles, and stick with DVD for things that aren't as reliant on how great everything looks.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

I replaced Saving Private Ryan, although the DVD was all scratched anyway. I hear great things about the LOTR extended editions and Matrix trilogy on blu ray, but that's a lot of money to be double-dipping with. I'm also considering upgrading Blade Runner.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

No. Did I say this already lol?

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

Update: I ended up replacing the LOTR extended editions after all, as well as Titanic.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

I said I would not replace my DVD library with Blu Ray versions because it's too much money. Now you can find bins packed with $6 Blu Rays right next to the $5 DVD's in Wal-Mart & Target. But I'm trying to be picky with what I buy. Most of the films I'm looking for still aren't out on Blu Ray. Heck some were never released in DVD form. Went I first got my '65 tv I bought films that I knew I'd enjoy seeing on the big screen. Matrix trilogy, Lord of the Rings trilogy, How the West Was Won, Speed Racer, Avatar, the Star Wars series and a lot of animation & anime. to name a few. Many I got cheap & brand new from resellers on amazon. Now I'm back to looking for hard to find films because I wasn't taking the time to watch what I had in either format. It's fun to have a goal rather than a lot of films.

You have the right to remain silent because whatever you say will probably be stupid anyway!

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

only some select favorites i will be replacing... things that are visually appealing to me...Hellraiser, Halloween, Dawn of The Dead...

...AS ALWAYS...thanks for replying! :)

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

Most of them but not all, fortunately I've been able to sell quite a few of my DVDs. Issues won't have to worry about upgrading them again after bluray :)

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

I'm new to Blu-ray, myself. So far, I just bought one movie on Blu-ray that I hadn't owned previously on DVD and replaced 3 movies I had on DVD with Blu-ray versions.

I, too, don't plan to replace my entire DVD collection, but I am planning to replace certain movies where I think the Blu-ray might make a difference--and that's only for movies made after 1980.

True friends remain loyal to one another, even when the whole world turns against them.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

Heck no! Not that I have a world record DVD collection (I have about 100 DVDs), I just don't think it is worth the money to replace all my DVDs with Blu-rays.

In fact, most of my Blu-rays are films I do not own already on DVD.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

I didn't have a big DVD collection. I don't intend to replace any DVD's with Blu Ray.
I am finding alot of movies I like are not on blu ray. Foreign films and 70s and 80's films and cult films, alot of stuff i like is unlikely to ever end up on blu ray. There is just not enough interest. I am still buying DVD's because of this. Blu ray is great for the newest releases but old movies or rare movies not so great. Alot of stuff i watch never made it past VHS. I like the blu ray medium but wish there was way more choices.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

Lucky for me I started collecting movies just after Blu-Ray was popular.
I wanted to buy the special limited edition Inception suitcase and that was my first Blu Ray. Back than I had no Blu-Ray player and the reason I bought one (PS3) was just for this. After that I started buying only Blu Rays.
I do have some DVD's but I dont intend to buy all of them again in Blu Ray. Only my favorites from the favorites from them.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

Now that I think about it, there's no reason at all for me to convert to Blu-Ray. I have a PS3 that can play all the Blu discs I have, and it along with my PC and DVD player can all play normal DVD's. I'm set for life, pretty much.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

Even though I never thought I would, I finally switched over to Blu in the fall of 2012 and I'm very glad that I did. I have hundreds of DVDs, and although my Blu-Ray player upconverts (like most of, if not all of them do), I just find that the picture quality is not the same. I do still like having DVD seeing as that is still the most dominant format - I really don't know many people that own Blu-Ray players! It's just convenient if I am going to somebody's house to watch movies and they don't have a Blu-Ray player. Not only that, but also if I want to watch in my laptop the DVDs come in handy.

The way I've been going about it, is if a movie I'm interested in replacing comes in a Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack, I'll buy it if it's at a reasonable price, and most recent releases are made that way too. There are some newer releases that are sold as Blu-Ray only, and I will buy those too. But I am (still) in no rush to replace my ENTIRE DVD collection. I've only got about 40 Blu-Rays total, so I've got a long way to go. Very low on my list of priorities are movies that were made before HD was a thing. There's only so much room for improvement with older films. Of course, I do have several exceptions.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

I bought a Blu-ray player and HD TV three years ago. I have no plans to replace my whole DVD collection and it would be impossible as only a part of my DVD collection is available on Blu-ray. I have replaced important titles if available. For me it's about living with both of the formats. I still buy DVDs like old Doctor Who as it is SD material. I simply don't make the formats a problem for myself.

I'd like to upgrade my Asian horror movies, but they just don't release them on Blu-ray! So, it seems I have to live with the DVDs...

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

I've switched over as many titles as I could, but unfortunately many of the movies I own on DVD aren't available on Blu-Ray. So my collection sits at an even mix right now...

I don't know why people are already wondering what the next platform will be when many movies haven't even made the switch over to Blu Ray yet

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

At this point, I can say yes, I'm replacing MOST of my DVD library with blu-rays, except some of the comedies, which look just fine on DVD, and which are light-hearted fare that doesn't seem to necessitate seeing every pore in the actors' faces in order to laugh.

In some cases I keep BOTH the DVD AND the blu-ray versions of films. I've kept some of my DVD editions of movies where the special features on DVD didn't carry over to blu-ray, like the Star Wars saga and the James Bond films.

The Star Wars saga blu-ray collection contains many great never-before-seen special features. Sadly, the Star Wars blu-rays lack the comprehensive web documentaries and poignant deleted scenes for Episodes I-III as well as the revealing Empire of Dreams documentary which details the rags-to-riches story and struggle of George Lucas to get the classic Episodes IV-VI on screen. So I've kept the Star Wars DVDs to enjoy those documentaries.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

I would keep the ones that are not on Blu ray yet.

Re: After adopting Blu, are you replacing your whole DVD library?

I just purchased the TV miniseries Roots on DVD, because, despite the fact that Roots was shot on 35mm film, it's in the old broadcast 4x3 TV aspect ratio of the time it was made, and it's not on blu-ray, only DVD.

Even on DVD, Roots still looks better than the noisy TV broadcast of Roots I saw as a kid.

So I'm still supporting DVD, because it's the only way to see some of these old shows.
