Why do old printed pictures look so horrific?

Maybe this is not the forum to ask this, but I want to know why do magazines printed in the 60's and 70's look so ugly, and I'm not talking about the yellowing that comes from age, but the actual printing is so ugly and has a burnt quality to it, and that is not what the pictures were like. For instance this is the printed photograph: http://s1077.photobucket.com/user/guynlgbch/media/US%20Vogue%200575/01PhotoHelmutNewtonModelsLisaTaylorUnknownsHairMakeupRickGillette.jpg.html

and this would be a digital file from the negative: https://40.media.tumblr.com/cb62aa03012fe218111c7c2ba0ff99c6/tumblr_o137gjQ6xB1ryxb20o1_540.jpg

Does anyone know?

Re: Why do old printed pictures look so horrific?

Back then Offset printing in color was still in its infancy. The machines where pretty crude and never really managed to get the mix of the colors correctly to show the actual quality of the original source material.

Even though the technology has severely improved since then, they are still not able to really nail the quality of the digital image source.
You can see the difference between digital and Offset here:

One reason why if some one tries to scan a magazine, the person also have to remember to adjust the scanning filters correctly, to correct that Offset quality and then eventual make to retouches with an image studio to get a proper digital image quality.

But current magazines look really good? For instance Vogue magazine, looks very much like digital files.

Re: Why do old printed pictures look so horrific?

They have only improved the Offset technology since then, nothing more.
But if you try to use a flatbed scanner and severely zoom in on these images in modern magazines, the difference between digital and Offset will be fully noticeable.

Re: Why do old printed pictures look so horrific?

digital as in the image on a screen or you mean digital printing?

Re: Why do old printed pictures look so horrific?

Digital printing.

Re: Why do old printed pictures look so horrific?

So in digital printing there isn't that moiré effect of offset printing?
